Agreed. Great movie. 44 minutes ago, MWil23 said: That's a really good one. Mine is probably John Miller in Saving Private Ryan, but he's absolute gold in about anything he's in. Saving Private Ryan is my favorite war movie of all time, so long as you don’t count Apocalypse Now (I don’t). But yeah, I don’t think Hanks carried that movie the way he did some others. Cast Away is the obvious example. Hard to do one guy with zero supporting characters for almost the whole running time. I feel like Hanks already has done a couple of different roles to show range. He played a gay lawyer with AIDS in the early freaking 90s, and played a literal hitman in RTP. He knows what he’s good at and sticks with it most of the time. Can’t fault him for it.
MacReady
Robson - Site physician - Gary Oldman More like Oldman’s portrayal of Commissioner Gordon than any of his other roles, he’s a normal person. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgD1W7x_W5Q Bottin - Senior biologist - Jared Harris A grump. Condescending, controlling, a know-it-all.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOc8Qj_jc9Y Shaw - Helicopter Pilot - Tobias Menzies Reserved, but not grumpily so. He’s cordial, friendly, contemplative, non-combative and becomes a sort of moral compass for the group. He is the protagonist of this movie.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPcDRR9oRn8 Boyle - Dog Handler - Ben Hardy Gets along better with dogs than people, is fiercely protective of his *******. Doesn’t talk much, to the point, uses non-verbal communication more than he speaks. Takes this role to show that he's capable of more than what he's been cast as so far. And he is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3iIJu08t-Y Johns - Cook - Jack O’Connell Cocksure and sarcastic, but not too bright. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAsXD6KMR7U Carter - Station Manager - Robbie Gee He’s a fake leader who nobody likes and nobody respects, but he’s good enough at his job that people respect his authority. He has a lot of fake charm and fake charisma that grown men just cannot connect with, and he is woefully unprepared for any kind of leadership role once the extraordinary situation presents itself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NbgGhD4tdk Howard - Geologist - Dylan Moran Shy, book smart, soft-spoken, but also a coward. Not really a coward, he’s just terrified. Howard is his first name, and the others call him Howard in a mocking tone because it bothers him so much to be perhaps the smartest one in the room and the least respected. https://youtu.be/LKatpM-u9h0?t=92 Matt Milne - Assistant Geologist - Matt Milnehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8k9eK4jf9Gg Campbell - Chief Mechanic - Adam Fogertyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-O06TKApPfI Pinster - Assistant Mechanic - Ian Peckhttps://www.imdb.com/videoplayer/vi2837034521 Wells - Meteorologist - Kevin Eldonhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeEWm9q59d0 Stone - Assistant Biologist - Malachi Kirbyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqnbnPQ356Q Flanagan - Radio Operator - Paul Readyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vt3mgW7IdI Klemish - Mechanic/pilot - William Beck A complete and total ****. He was too good to cast in such an unlikable role for my movie. Carter is dumb and the type to get highly intimidated and feel inferior around men much smarter than him. He exacerbates the situation by doubling down when he's wrong instead of listening to those who are much smarter than him.

I wanted actors that can ugly up easy, for the most part. I don't like movies where regular people look too attractive to be believable. That and I wanted to keep together actors that have worked together. Not a big enough problem to change my cast, but my wife would be disappointed. There’s a rumor, or maybe a fact, that Morgan Freeman was supposed to be Childs in The Thing, but he didn’t want it because he thought the plot was somehow racist. Maybe it wasn’t Freeman. Anyway, they said it was racist because the only two black actors were a mechanic and a cook. Lol.

Freeman is like the least woke black actor out there, so that's surprising, but who knows. In his younger days, maybe though. I guess someone like Lawrence Fishburn could be Runciter, and Don Cheadle could be a decent Ashwood, but Law (in my head) is a pretty critical piece of cast cohesion, since he's worked closely with Downey Jr. on a couple films and with Gilliam and Portman on one each. I imagine that, if this film were really being made, it'd be good to have that close a cast of central characters. I guess Skarsgard does that too, but I feel like he had very minor roles in the Marvel movies that Downey was in. And right now, I'm pretty proud of the amount of actors I have that have collaborated before, often and recently.
