Rome Eternals

Offense

Toting the Rock

Well we are gonna pound away behind our power formation here with the second level of Berlin being able to to better taken care advantage of.

It all starts up front with a some road grading offensivel linemen.  We appreciate their defensive line but the linebackers and safeties aren't built entirely on speed and they struggle against the the run.  Berlin generally starts glorified corners at safety so once we get past the front line we should rip off some big gains.

We plan to use a lot of power running with inside zones, power o, and counters.  When we get the front line tired we'll get some more tosses to get our RBs on second level defenders

We will rotate Gurley and Lindsey pretty evenly and we'll run hurry up at the end of quarters with Scarborough running over tired linemen

Passing

We don't fear any of the corners on the Berlin roster.  Our early down passing will be run off some RPO and play action.  We'll make sure to take some deep shots on play action to Cooper to keep then honest

In longer distances we'll go four wide with Edelman, Washington and Thomas hitting the field.  We'll concentrate on comeback seam route combos on one side with slants and out routes on the other.  Lindsey receives some screen passes as well as a couple wheel routes if Berlin forgers about him. If we start seeing zone expect floods and lining up three wr on one side with screen passes to Cooper or swing screens to a RB    Normally we try to to avoid a CB but none of the Berlin CB are playing awesome so Drew will hit whoever is open

We are looking at long sustained drives to chip away the clock and keep Brady off the field and keep our defense fresh

TL/DR:  Run heavy to get to the second level. Pass off play action, trust captain Drew to move the chains

Defense

This week we face Tom Brady and a solid group of wide receivers   While the listed is the base formation, we know they'll probably run a lot of four wide also

The offensive line is very meh

Our offensive tempo should allow this strategy of fresh linemen to have its best success.. We will blitz from all over however dropping edges into zone blitz coverages occasionally. Per usual Wilson plays in the boy with Hicks in four wide and both lb in three wide .  It's been proven time and again to beat Brady you have to get him off his spot and throw off the timing

Despite what rags believes, his offensive line is just not good.  Our pff stats of the week. Kolton Miller is the 43 OT, Alex Cappas is 40th and hasn't looked the same since his injury.  Still better than Gabe Jackson at 46. Linsley is clearly their best linemen at 11 and Moton is a respectable 22. These guys simply aren't gonna win one on one battles so out blitzes are gonna get home

In the backend we put Humphrey on Golladay.  Nickell and Jackson get the Slots and Amukamra gets the other edge.  If for some reason Golladay is in the slot Humphrey follows him and Jackson kicks outside.  We are using heavy bump in run coverage with our interior blitzing. Outside of Golladay, Berlin brings in a bunch of speed wr who are slender so we feel we can rough them up at the line and through off the timing allowing our blitz to get home.  Hicks takes tight end and Milano gets the RB. Wilson or Milano will switch on RB duties when Milano blitzes. He or Wilson will be blitzing 80% of the time

If the running back stays in to block his responsibility will have the underneath robber zone.   Boston has the deep middle.

We are gonna dare Brady to throw deep. He has one in air completion of over 31 yards in two months. We'll shade Boston to the Hollywood side

We will per usual mix in zones blitz, base zone and occasional zero man blitz just to keep the offense guessing as one defense against Brady is death

Tl/dr. Blitz Brady up the gut.  Jam the wr. Throw off timing and trust the corner talent. Dare em to throw deep and beg them to run

Berlin Blitzkrieg

Motivation
This is the most important game in the history of the Berlin franchise.  If we win this, we get the #1 seed and home field throughout the playoffs.  If not, we have to go on the road.  Luckily for us, we are as healthy as any team in BDL.

Offense
Aaron Jones will be our main RB for the game and will get at least 23 touches.  Guice is going to rotate in and get at least 10 touches.  D Johnson will get some snaps, especially on 3rd downs.  That said, if we can run the ball 50 times and win, we absolutely will as LVE being out helps our run game.  We will also use our RBs, especially Aaron Jones, in the passing game because he’s been too good not to.

2 TE - We are going to use this set around 45% of the time.  With LVE out, we want to force Rome to put a 3rd LB or Safety on the field.  We are going to move our TEs all over to show coverage and give a blocking advantage.  Look for us to use our TEs on quicker hook, slant, and out routes initially for solid yardage before they start pushing the seam a bit more.

Marquise and Kirk will rotate in as each of our WRs offer different challenges for the Rome D.  But all of our WRs force Rome to respect them deep while having the ability to run more shallow routes.  The Texans used this to their advantage Thursday.  The CBs had to back off of Fuller due to his speed, so he was able to attack underneath.  Kirk and Marquise have similar abilities while Golladay has jump ball ability.  If Rome doesn’t respect any of them deep, Brady will throw it up and let them go after the ball.  If they do, we use the underneath space.

If we go deep, one of the TEs will stay in to block while the other TE and Jones will serve as check down options.

3 WR - We are going to use this set around 40% of the time.  We will have Golladay, Fuller, and one of Kirk or Marquise with Hunter.  We will use motion to give Brady pre-snap info.  We want to use mostly quick slants, hooks, and crossers to allow Brady to read and react.  However, we will have plays drawn up to have our guys push deep on occasion and let Brady just throw it up.  Hunter or Jones will stay in to block on those deep routes while the other is a safety valve.

We are going to use a few draws via RPO in this set.  Henry will sprint down the seam or do a mid-level crosser to pull his coverage man out of the box which helps our RB.  However, the second Henry’s cover man doesn’t respect him and bites on this run action, we will make him regret it.  The second read on these RPOs will be the slot WR.  If the NB bites in run support, we will target our slot guy.

4 WR - The final 15% will have Golladay, Kirk, Marquise, and Fuller with Jones.  We want to spread out their defense.  We are going to use more draws and screens from this set to further slow down their pass rush.

We are going to incorporate many of the same ideas we do in other sets with our WRs.  We want to force their DBs to play off coverage so the underneath routes open up.  We are also going to use bunch formations here so our guys get a free release.

Defense
Base - We are going to run a 5-2 defense against Rome’s base set.  The strength of the Rome offense is their OL, so we want to match that strength with strength.

Darius Slay just went up against Amari, followed him everywhere, and held him to 3 catches on 8 targets for 38 yards.  We’re okay with that.  Slay follows Amari.

Byron follows Edelman everywhere.

Rashaan and Tremaine are going to key the run game to shut that down.  If either the FB or RB go out for a pass, the LB to that side will have them in coverage.

Kazee is going to play in the box to give an eighth man to defend against the run and has the TE in coverage.

Thornhill will play a middle zone this week around 8-13 yards deep.  Cooper is Rome’s only real deep threat here, but with Slay on Cooper, we are more concerned with Edelman v. Byron.  Playing Thornhill here will give more support in the middle of the field where Edelman is so dangerous.  We don’t think Rome has any other personnel to stretch the field vertically in this set, so we are going to condense our guys and make them prove us wrong.

3 WR - Slay takes Amari.  Byron takes Edelman.  Conley comes in for a DT and takes the 3rd WR.  Rashaan takes the TE/FB.  Tremaine is keyed in on the RB all day.

Thornhill is going to sit deep middle.  Kazee is going to play up in the box to help stop the run and to bracket Edelman.

4 WR - Hilton comes in for Rashaan and takes the 4th WR.  Everything else from 3 WR sets stays the same.
