Look in a mirror

is that supposed to be an insult?  because only "gurus" would even know what the Dunning-Kruger effect is...

the point is, just because a lot of people say something, doesn't make it true. it might be the majority opinion, but it is not necessarily true.  majority opinion is neither necessary nor sufficient in the definition of objective truth.

If 90% of the people here nominated  Silence of the Lambs to  "best pixar film"  would you give it the same credence?  Of course not.

Anyways, I suppose I know what's coming next.  Not that it matters.

Confirmation bias is the worst part about it.  I knew The Thing wasn't going to win, and I was okay with that, and objectively speaking it's not the best horror of the 80's.  I didn't leave this discussion because of that.  I left because certain people who know nothing act like they know something and use the voting on a Football Forum as justification for their opinions.  You put Silence of the Lambs in any category of movies and ask people which is best and it will beat most movies.  Acting childish and pointing out its win as justification in your classification of it and then continuing to taunt people who classify it as thriller is the ultimate petty BS.

What really sent me out of this whole thing is certain people saying the effects of The Thing drop it down to 2/5 for them.  Zero context, zero suspension of disbelief, and zero perspective.  If there's one thing you CAN'T fault The Thing for, it's its effects.  Ask literally anybody working in Hollywood in makeup, practical effects, anything and they are going to cite The Thing as their Holy Grail of accomplishment in the field.  It's like complaining about The Conversation not having good sound.  Or like saying Earthquake was better at sound mixing because it won the Oscar that year over The Conversation.

Then continuing to taunt.  Like yeah, watch Phantasm without putting yourself in the right frame of mind and it's going to suck.  You can see the wires, the bug monster looks laughable.  It was also made in the 70's.  It was also the definition of guerrilla filmmaking on a budget of 300,000 and it created one of the most iconic horror villains ever.  Additionally, its influence has literally made its way into our culture as it helped inspire Slender Man and an entire handful of villains over the years.  But no, it sucks and it's a porno.

It's dangerous for me to even come in these threads anymore because what we've got in here is someone equivalent to some idiot telling football fans they're wrong because Skip Bayless said so.

I just cannot suffer this kind of idiocy.

Yeah, pratical effects always trump CGI for me.

CGI has the uncanny valley effect, and its always better done subtley, where you dont notice the CGI

Movies like The Thing, Gremlins, Tremors, and Mad Max Fury Road are examples of filmmaking.

otherwise, its the Star Wars prequel green screen hell

I looked it up and realized it perfectly encompasses your stance here. However, I never once disputed that the majority makes it true, I simply stated that this is a majority vote competition and begrudging the majority in a majority competition is an exercise in futility.

Also this:

Is a massive logical fallacy and you know it. There is no reason to address it outside of that.

I can definitely see the Shining.

Jack gave it his all for this picture.

Jack was the wrong choice.  Should have been someone you couldn't see going psychotic.  Stephen King knew his material well enough to know that it should have been a Jon Voight type.  The Shining might be the best movie from this decade, but it's not the best horror from this decade.  Every time I watch The Shining I ask, "Where's the horror?"  Jack is a caricature more than someone to be afraid of.  Other than Danny seeing the twins and Shelley Duvall seeing a man in a bear suit about to give a man a BJ, it's almost like Kubrick tried his hardest to convince us it's a story of a man going insane and seeing things rather than a haunted hotel.

I am not saying anything bad about the movie.  The movie is what it is and it's obviously Kubrick at his best or near best, but the movie just doesn't FEEL like horror to me.  It definitely is and I'm certainly not trying to say it belongs in a different genre or anything because it doesn't, but...

It feels like a nature documentary filmed in a nuclear power plant.  The nature is the bugs and mice that found their way inside.
It feels like a sermon held in a brothel.
It feels like an orgy in a church.
It feels like watching a football game in a baseball bar.
It feels like a basketball game played with a football.

Objectively speaking, as far as BEST MOVIE out of the nominated, it's definitely The Shining.
Personal favorite of the decade is The Thing obviously.
After that it's Aliens, although Aliens quite clearly went from horror to action.
If I had to pick a movie that best represents the genre of horror and all its fans, I would say it's Nightmare on Elm Street.

When this whole thing started, I was confused by the nomination/winner process.

I thought each decade would have 8 movies represent the decade.  Those 8 movies would play in a tournament to provide a ranking of 8 best per decade.

I think Deadpulse really missed a golden opportunity there.

To have a ranking for each decade and each genre would really make this a great comprehensive list of the movies that everyone should watch in each genre.  Maybe it's not too late.

They will. Each genre will have a bracket of 8 movies from each decade. There will be 8 Genre's so each decade will have 8 movies from different genres. The winner of the genre brackets will go into a final 8, with 8 movies representing each genre. So there will be an 8 best per decade, they just wont go head to head. I suppose each decade could have a bracket instead of each genre, but I was worried about recency bias there.

Don’t worry about it.  I will try my hardest to implement the ignore feature and come back into this discussion if you have a ranking of 8 best genre films per decade.

Whichever film wins the popular vote wins best of the decade, but then rank the remainders with head to head.

Im already tracking total votes for the winners to determine seeding. Ranking the top vote getters per decade regardless of genre can be done once all the genre brackets are full.
