This article is a nice idea but I am less thriled with the execution. It perports to give five players who should have breakout seasons. Some are good but some not so much.
https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/lists/kansas-city-chiefs-2022-breakout-candidates-mecole-hardman-willie-gay-rashad-fenton-mike-danna-khalen-saunders/

  • Mecole Hardman - Decent choice. He was too much like Tyreek Hill to get a full plate.
  • Willie Gay - Willie broke out last season. He and Nick Bolton are almost the only LB returning, so more PT available, but Leo Chenal could grab most of it.
  • Rashad Fenton - Fenton got jumped on the depth chart by first pick Trent McDuffie and has major new competition from Joshua Williams and Jaylen Watson.
  • Mike Danna - This is a good one. Even if Clark and Karlaftis play a full load, there will be a lot of DE snaps available. After Danna all we have is Joshua Kaindoh.
  • Khalen Saunders - This is more of a last chance. Saunders and Nnadi need to step up their game.

OTAs begin today which is the third phase of off season. Up to this point we had rookie camp then voluntary conditioning workouts. OTAs are primarily for familiariztion with the scheme and playbook, though there are non-contact drils.
https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2022/05/25/kansas-city-chiefs-2022-nfl-offseason-program-phase-3-begins/

Schedule:

  • Organized Team Activities Group 1: May 25-26.
  • Organized Team Activities Group 2: May 31-June 2.
  • Organized Team Activities Group 3: June 7-10.
  • Mandatory Minicamp: June 14-16.

Partly related, the league voted to continue the multi-phase roster cutdown used last year. Cuts are announced Tuesday after each preseason game.

Things to watch during OTAs. Some are obvious. Others less so.
https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/lists/kansas-city-chiefs-things-to-watch-otas-injuries-no-shows-second-year-players-rookies/

Here is a check list for future reference

  1. Who's healthy?
  2. Who's not attending?
  3. How are rookies fitting in?
  4. Are 2nd year players improving?
  5. Open position battles.
  6. Playing time battles.

Running those through

  1. Several players are rehabbing or returning from injuries. This includes Lucas Niang, Joshua Kaindoh, and Jody Fortson. A less famiiliar name is Malik Herring.
  2. Attendance is not yet known
  3. Trent McDuffie, George Karlaftis, and possibly Leo Chenal are expected to start immediately. Others will have to earn spots.
  4. Nick Bolton is slated as full time MLB. Humphrey and Trey Smith are already at Pro Bowl level. The just need to escape slumps. Kaindoh, Herring, and Fortson had season ending injuries. Noah Gray had a decent rookie season. With all the WR around, Cornell Powell will have to show something just to hang around.
  5. In theory SLB is open but Leo Chenal should nab that. The big one to watch is RT with Niang rehabbing.
  6. Everyone wants to know how the WR ranks will shake out. CB is also crowded and backups at RB and TE are wide open.

No kidding Turk and Kelce seem to be the workout warriors. On a good NFL team, that's saying a lot.

In  other news, Fortson signed his tender.

The first couple of days of OTA are in the books. We get three more days starting right after Memorial Day. Here is a few high points. For some reason guys named Justin are a theme--Justing Ross, Justin Watson, Justin Reid.

OTAs resume tomorrow (31 May 2022). Here are a few position battles to consider. Only RT is for starting position and that because of an injury. The others are for playing time. A couple that are not mentioned are KR and PR.

This is a bit under the radar. In February, the Chiefs signed CFL star DE Jonathan Woodard on a reserve/future contract. He was relased after the draft to make space for UDFA signings. There is a good chance Woodard was told that he is still in the team's plans.

The second roundof OTAs begin today and run through Thursday. Here are some things to watch. Mahomes has a charity golf tournament, so he will likely miss days. Watch the WR. Four spots are settled but 2-3 remain up for grabs. Absence by veteran players is not really noteworthy, but players without defined roles is another matter. Check the injuries and absences.

Here are a couple of points from round #2 of OTAs.

Jody Fortson signed his ender likely completing the TE group and adding a core ST player.
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/05/31/jody-fortson-signs-erfa-tender-with-chiefs/

In addition to the buzz about Justyn Ross' one hand catch, there is buzz about the chemistry between Mahomes and Justin Watson, formerly of Tampa Bay. Watson was a 2018 5th round pick. He's big--6'3", 215--but fast, 4.42 in his predraft workouts in 2018. However, while he played ST extensively, he has only 23 career catches. With the ST experence, Watson has an inside track to make the 53.

Leo Chenal signs.
