They have to do this in just over a month or OB is stuck with a one year tender deal. Regarding camp, here is an article on three postions to watch closely--RB, CB, LB. It's a bit early but the depth spots at these positions are wide open.https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2022/6/2/23148696/chiefs-position-battles-3-to-watch-on-the-roster-fringes Here is something about Malik Herring. I have no idea what to expect from him. Anything from full rotation player to not even PS is possible. I have tto wonder if he can slide inside like they say Karlaftis can.https://www.yardbarker.com/nfl/articles/malik_herring_should_be_getting_more_attention/s1_16631_37554653 Edited June 3, 2022 by onejayhawk
onejayhawk
Have you noticed how many of the new guys are named Justin. This is Justin Reid our new safety. He seems to be emerging as a leader in the secondary. Then there is Justyn Ross, he of the one handed snag last week. Here is a ton of background on the UDFAhttps://chiefswire.usatoday.com/lists/kansas-city-chiefs-rookie-wr-justyn-ross-clemson-stats-highlights-outlook/
onejayhawk
OTAs are wrapping up and minicamp is next week. We finally get to see the one big head-to-head position battle, to wit RT. The article tells the players and sets the stage. The author gives Wylie a 45% of retaining the position, Rookie Darian Kinnard a 35% of winning it, with only 5% for Lucas Niang. https://www.yardbarker.com/nfl/articles/the_chiefs_are_ready_for_a_right_tackle_royal_rumble/s1_16631_37574439

Wylie is a spot starter (at best) at a few spots so keep him at that role. Plus I'm curious to see how Kinnard plays at the weight he is now. Word was is that he shed some weight prior to the senior bowl to help with his movement. Imo he should be a lot more fluid than he was in college. onejayhawk
Wylie did a good job at RT. It seems that putting next to a beast like Trey Smith helps his game. The thing about Kinnard is that he is a beast himself. His run blocking should be excellent, hopefully at Niang level and run blocking was Niang's strength. The pass blocking is a concern, but he's smart and has excellent work habits. The odd man out is Geron Christian, who was signed early in the FA period. With Niang hurt and without KInnard, I would have given Christian a 70% chance to make the team and a decent chance to start. Now, I suspect he's trade bait. About Niang, some new rules could aid the team at the final cuts. If the team puts him on PUP out of camp, Niang could attend meetings and use team facilities for rehab. He would be eligible to return for week #5.https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2022/06/09/kansas-city-chiefs-lucas-niang-new-reserve-pup-list-rules-2022/ Edited June 9, 2022 by onejayhawk
onejayhawk
This is just fun. Chiefs HoF K Jan Stenerud was visiting the team. Safety Justin Reid, who is trying out for the role of emergency K, kicked a FG with Stenerud watching.https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2022/06/11/kansas-city-chiefs-justin-reid-emergency-kicker-practice-field-goal-jan-stenerud/
onejayhawk
This is a summary article for OTAs as we head into minicamp. The key one seems to be that MVS is looking very locked in.https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/lists/kansas-city-chiefs-otas-takeaways-absences-linebackers-marquez-valdes-scantling-derrick-gore/
onejayhawk
Minicamp begins today. Here are some articles covering it. Sme things to watch are injuries, who is rushing the passer and from where, and Jerick McKinnon's role https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/lists/kansas-city-chiefs-things-to-watch-mandatory-minicamp-injuries-orlando-brown-jerick-mckinnon/https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2022/6/14/23167293/chiefs-three-day-mandatory-minicamp-begins-tuesdayhttps://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2022/06/14/kansas-city-chiefs-everything-you-need-to-know-about-mandatory-minicamp-2022/ Here are four players to watch--Geron Christian, Skyy Moore, Frank Clark, Joshua Williams. onejayhawk
Injuries and absences.https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2022/06/14/kansas-city-chiefs-mandatory-minicamp-injury-absence-updates-orlando-brown-frank-clark-justyn-ross/ These are on Karlaftis. He lest more than ten pounds in the redraft process. Still, the team that sold the team is the attitude. He has also learned the first rule--NEVER hit Patrick Mahomes.https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2022/6/14/23167819/george-karlaftis-lost-10-to-15-pounds-ahead-of-becoming-chiefs-no-30-pickhttps://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2022/06/14/kansas-city-chiefs-george-karlaftis-mandatory-minicamp-patrick-mahomes-sack/ Edited June 14, 2022 by onejayhawk

onejayhawk
We are starting to get wrap up articles for minicamp. This one covers five points. The first is a cautionary note. These are non-contact plays. Real evaluation waits til training camp. One that stands out for me is the play of 3rd round pick Bryan Cook. He was drafted to replace Dan Sorensen and looks good. https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/lists/kansas-city-chiefs-mandatory-minicamp-takeaways-george-karlaftis-bryan-cook-cb-injuries-jerick-mckinnon/ This one is from an interview with HC Reid concerning the WR. Because it is non-contact, QBs and WRs can show off. Some refer to minicamp as receiver camp.https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2022/06/17/kansas-city-chiefs-andy-reid-progress-report-skyy-moore-juju-smith-schuster-marquez-valdes-scantling/ On the frontline players: Yeah, I really liked the way (JuJu and MVS) worked. They have a nice connection with Pat (Mahomes) up to this point. I’d be curious to see how it gets when there are live bullets and all that stuff. We’ll see how that rolls but I wouldn’t expect anything much different than what I’ve been seeing. And the other guys too have worked in there. Mecole has upped his game here and done a nice job. Our young kid, Skyy, he’s mixed in there and he’s been good. I like the mixture that we’ve got going. On just Skyy Moore You know what, he looks strong. You see that in the way he’s built physically, but that transfers. You see those big hands he has, he catches everything. He’s a good route runner. Smart kid, seemed to pick it up well. onejayhawk
Here is an after minicamp evaluation. Improved position--MVS, Nick Bolton, Josh Gordon. Slipped--Gore, Hardman, McDuffie. One to watch, TE Jordan Franks. https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2022/6/20/23161682/chiefs-marquez-valdes-scantling-josh-gordon-and-nick-bolton-among-teams-market-movers In that vein, this in MVShttps://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/06/20/patrick-mahomes-marquez-valdes-scantlings-done-a-great-job-of-learning-the-offense/ Edited June 20, 2022 by onejayhawk
