Current Vikings taking the longboat to a different sea...?

It has long been rumored that 2022 would be Alexander Mattison’s final year in Minnesota as he pursues an opportunity to become a starting RB in 2023. However, if the Vikings cut Cook, perhaps Minnesota becomes his best chance at earning that RB1 role.

On the other hand, Mattison was less than impressive during his carries in 2022. Mattison ran a career-low 74 times in 2022, earning 283 yards (also a career-low) and 5 TDs. Have the Vikings seen enough to sign him to another contract and hand him the keys to the backfield?

I don’t want Mattison back. Rework Cook’s deal and bring him back, or let the veterans leave and build a stable of running backs on rookie contracts.

Mattison is a solid backup, but that's what he is.  He doesn't have the vision or speed to be a full-time starter.  But, he certainly could be used in a rotation with a speedier back, just not as a primary ballcarrier...and just not here.

Mullens was the only other quarterback for Minnesota to see playing time this season, but proved to be a capable backup when he was on the field.

He went 5-for-7 in the final minutes of Minnesota's loss to Dallas and was perfect on four throws on the road against Green Bay, including a 9-yard touchdown to K.J. Osborn. Against the Bears, Mullens utilized his arm and his legs to keep the Vikings in front of Chicago during the second half. This isn't the first time the 27-year-old Mullens has shown promise. He threw for 4,714 yards and 25 touchdowns in 19 games for San Francisco from 2018-2020 before going 20-for-30 with 147 yards and a score in one game with Cleveland in 2021.

Rosen, meanwhile, had a solid start to his career. He threw for 2,278 yards and 11 touchdowns in 14 games for Arizona in 2018, but has bounced around the league since, playing on six different teams in the past four seasons.

The contracts for Mullens and Rosen are set to expire.

Jettisoning Kendricks and Hicks, both age 30, could begin to ease the Vikings salary cap pain.

Kendricks’ cap number in 2023 is $11.4 million, and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah could gain $9.52 million back by releasing Kendricks, with a $1.9 dead cap penalty — which is probably worth it.

Hicks is in a similar financial spot, scheduled to incur a $6.5 million cap hit against the Vikings books but just a $1.5 million dead cap figure if released. He’d free up an additional $5 million for Adofo-Mensah in cap space if released.

I think a restructure/extension with Kendricks could be on the table, so long as he is willing to drop his pay. He has been a big time leader for the defense and in the community, which Kwesi and KOC both made a point about how that will be important in their evaluations. Kendricks wasn’t what he had been this year, and age plays into that, but I’m sure scheme had some to do with it as well. Asamoah would be our only backer who shows upside/starter potential on the roster assuming Hicks would be gone along with Kendricks, and that would be too thin of a group for my liking, at least next year.
