They excused the pick in the 3rd because he was likely to go in the 4th. So, why not just trade back into the 4th? This is ridiculous.

There might not have been anyone looking to move up from the top of the 4th. The next kicker went 13 spots behind Moody, so that's about as far back as you could've gone before you lost him. Not worth the risk.

Also, GMs are more prone to staying pat and taking their guy rather than moving back and hoping you can still get him. They probably just didn't want to risk losing him. You really don't want to get too cute and screw it up.

They had a 4th round grade on Moody, the next kicker went at the top of the 4th round. We had a pick between the 3rd and the 4th. Moody went pretty much where he should've gone.

Would those 4 picks really matter? Like we basically had 4th round picks in those comp one.

With what was still available? Yes. They didn't need to move to the front of the 4th to acquire him. Im guessing it would have been NE so just get ahead of them.

It takes two to tango and we don't know if anyone was willing to move up so they could move back. There's no need to complicate the situation with trying to force a trade down. Just take the guy you like and move on.

And who says another team wouldn't have taken Moody between that time and the time the Patriots picked Ryland. I am not even debating if in theory its a good pick because in my eyes i would much rather have taken a kicker in the 7th or pick up one of the undrafted ones. Trading back first take two but also if you identified the guy as the one you want you aren't going to risk it for the value of a mid 5th(and that is in the absolute most ideal scenario where you end up exactly before the Patriots pick. I much rather us stick with every single pick and draft guys we want over moving up and down and getting so called perceived value but in the end losing the guys that we wanted.
