I see its pretty hard to read. I copy and pasted it from the EMB. If I posted in plain text I was afraid I might lose the color coded aspect of it. But to read it easier anyone can just copy and paste it in black and white. Its worth a look for people interested in visits.

Make that two more guys who don't like DeJean as a corner in Sam Monson and Chris Simms. Looking forward to hearing what Cosell and Fran Duffy have to say about him. That's probably like 80% of "experts" I've heard say he's not a corner.

Simms likes to be different. I dont really think his opinions hold much weight.

I think DeJean is a CB. And I think he can be a fine CB despite what scouts perceive as some hip stiffness. a la Patrick Peterson. Had a fine career while not being the most fluid mover for the position.

But I do think when you pay attention to his highlight plays, if its not a pick 6, most of his other highlights are coming off blitzing. His ability to play the run, and play close to the box probably means he is best maximized closer to the action- at nickel CB.

That should not be taken as "he needs to be a nickel", or he needs to be a safety. He doesnt "need" a position change.

He can do anything. Its just looking at what he does well and determining where that is best utilized.

He will cover good WRs just fine outside, but youre not going to get as much of his instincts, physicality, and blitzing ability if you have him out on the boundary.

I take him as a CB and have him at nickel day 1. The flexibility it gives us in coverages knowing if his slot WR motions to the other side, CJ can rotate down and cover him man to man, while DeJean backs up in to the safety position. Just being able to rotate like that and stay in coverages, or flip it regardless of how an offense wants to motion is a very appealing possibility. Something that a different nickel like Sainristil doesnt give you.

I put him at nickel but almost never take him off the field. If a team wants to go with 2 TEs instead, bring Blankenship down in to the box as the defacto WILL. He can play the run just fine, or match up against a TE in zone. Gardner-Johnson and DeJean become your safeties on that play. You play a ton of nickel whether there are 3 WRs or not. The versatility of DeJean and CJ to play nickel or S, as well as Blankenship's ability to play S/LB hybrid role allow you to match up with a lot of different groupings without changing personnel. And kind of hides the fact that we dont have very good LBs.

This is why DeJean is my top guy at 22. And probably even would be if we were picking a bit higher. No one else offers this type of multi-factoral impact.

Calling Chris Simms an expert is extremely generous. Guy is a hot take artist and nothing more.

DeJean is a CB. He can also be a safety if you really want him to be one, but I think that is a massive misuse of his talents.

Too stiff in the hips.  Safety all day.

Agreed on Simms. I just think my biggest thing, and this might just be a me thing, but I'm looking at pure outside corner on our roster and I have too many questions. Even Slay as CB1 for us is a question. CB2 is a question. Replacing Slay eventually as CB1 is a question. There's all these questions, for a team that is in a pretty wide super bowl window, at both CB spots. And really none of these questions have comfortable solutions. Did Ringo show some promise last year? Sure he did and I am fine with him being in the mixture of the solution, but he's a small ingredient for a team in a super bowl window with a massive hole at CB2, and who might be without a CB1 for a true contender. I bring all of this up because I really feel this team needs a true pure outside CB, and I'm just not sure that DeJean provides us with that. Obviously you have Arnold and Mitchell, but hell I'd probably feel better about taking Wiggins, McKinstry or Rakestraw over Coop at their appropriate value slots, solely based on their ability to play true outside CB. I'm probably overthinking DeJean, as well as taking all of the "expert" opinions too literal. But it just bugs me how infrequently he's being viewed as a legitimate outside CB. Which is exactly what this team needs for now and the future.

Yes which is why I used the quotations. But he's surely not the only one out there who believes this notion. He sure looks like a CB to me as well. But all these evaluations from these analysts give me pause as to what I'm seeing.

Chris Simms saying he doesn't like some like a guy just confirms to me that they'll be a future stud.

I think with our roster as it is right now, he starts at nickel this year. I also think in year 2, if you need him to play outside, he can do that and be a star. But I think you want his skillset in the slot to best utilize his talents.

I brought up Patrick Peterson because the same commentary existed during his run up to the draft. He was a straight line athlete who didnt flip his hips smoothly and plenty of people thought he might transition to safety.

He didnt. Perhaps he was slightly overrated as a CB in the NFL based on his name value from college. BUT, he was pretty darn good and Id take that career for a 1st round CB any day.

Really think he is a pretty good comp for DeJean as far as CBs with a little bit of questions about their fluidity. But they are good enough. Not everyone is a malcolm jenkins. Sometimes guys with some tightness can still thrive outside.

Its also worth noting that in our defense, one CB plays more man, and the other CB plays more zone.

Again, I think DeJean can be just fine outside in either role. But if you replace Bradberry with him, hes a star playing zone and reading the QB. His instincts to cover his man, and know when to undercut a different route of another player nearby....

Its not as if we draft him and playing him outside means he is on an island all day every day. Thats Slay's job. Its not what Bradberry did. When Bradberry did that, he lost. But when Bradberry got to play his zone, he was fine. DeJean can play that role, and also not lose like Bradberry did when he had to play some man.

Idk I watched him and I simply don't see these red flags that people bring up. I think he is plenty fluid and he has all the athletic traits to be successful. He is also a playmaker who can jump routes and has great instincts with the ball in his hands.

I swear with DeJean a lot of the discourse about him not being able to play CB is simply because he is white lol.

If I've learned nothing in life, it's to do the exact opposite of what Chriss Simms says haha.

Right. Was just bringing him up to add to the collection of people who keep saying this.
