Venial & Mortal Sins (Positional)

As a coach, I speak to players about Venial (meh) and Mortal (omg no) sins. For example, a venial sin for a linebacker would be not keeping head on a swivel in pass protection. Wrong, but not gonna get you benched.

Mortal sins of linebacker play would be not reading guards and/or getting pinned inside of blocks.

Got any other examples of Mortal Sins in football for other positions? The absolute no-no’s of technique?

Mortal Sin for OL: Not making first contact with your hands in pass pro. Too many times guys will let the DL get first contact and then try to steer them out of the pocket. Pass pro isn't passive, you gotta put the other guy on his back foot and force him to fight.

Venial sin - QB missing his wide open read to throw to his most talented target. Ex: say a guy like Russell Gage is open for an 8 yard gain, but Julio Jones has a guy on him for a 12 yard gain. Throwing to Julio is acceptable because well, it's Julio.

Mortal sin - QB missing his stud open on a read to throw to a lesser player on a later read for a check down and short gain. That's how drives stall.

Venial sin: Holding to prevent a sack. Protect your QB from contact at all cost, you might get away with a hold once in a while.

Mortal sin: Holding and STILL giving up a sack. You committed a penalty and STILL put the QB in a compromised situation?

Venial sin: False starts. Not very good but we get it. You jump the snap count in an effort to make a play.

Mortal sin: False start after a time out (or extended play stoppage). You had extra time to figure everything out and get the snap count - get your head in the goddam game.

Venial sin: Offsides. Same as false starts, trying to make a play and time the snap count.

Mortal sin: Offsides on a 4th down play. Hold your water, you don’t need to time the count. You did exactly what the opposition wanted you to do, give them free yards on what should have been a drive ending play.

Venial sin - Getting back to your landmark in coverage and just getting beat because the guy is faster, stronger, better than you.

Mortal sin - Not getting back to your landmark in coverage because you don't believe they'll try to make that throw.

(literally why the Falcons traded away Dean Marlowe this past year.)

-Running with the ball and holding/palming it in one hand

-Defender grabbing a facemask or horsecollar

-Offensive lineman going low against a defender that’s already engaged with a blocker

-Making contact to a kicker or punter during a kick

-Lining up in the neutral zone

-Laces out during a kick

-Picking up a fumble instead of falling on it

- QB throwing across his body to the middle of the field from the sidelines

- Releasing the ball before breaking the TD plane
