Commanders hire Adam Peters to be new GM (5 year deal)

From Ben Standig at the Athletic in an article on the final coaching hires and front office adjustments.  It sounds like a lot of things remain in flux, but even if folks are only being kept for a couple months, you still have to adjust your structure:

At Quinn’s introductory news conference last week, Peters said he expected to keep the inherited front office and scouting department “throughout this whole draft process,” while noting, “If we have a chance to add some talented people, we will.

• Having arrived in Washington with the general manager title in 2021, Mayhew is now a senior personnel executive/adviser to the general manager. It’s unusual to see an executive stay with the same organization at a lower title. But the connection between Peters and Newmark, and Mayhew’s ability to keep his ego in check, explains the difference.

Newmark’s lengthy stint in Detroit overlapped with Mayhew’s 15 years with the organization, including the last eight as the team’s GM (2008-2015). Mayhew and Peters were together in San Francisco from 2017 to 2020, when the reigning NFC champions began their turnaround. Ron Rivera had the final say in personnel moves the past three seasons, with Hurney typically the primary adviser.

Therefore, it’s not like Mayhew is now stripped of significant power. He will guide Peters as a first-time GM. Mayhew was part of the head-coaching search process.

Hurney is transitioning to an advisory role unlikely to extend into the 2024 season. Two other personnel executives — Eric Stokes and Chris Polian — remain on staff, along with director of college personnel Tim Gribble. Peters met with Washington’s scouts at the Senior Bowl.

No clue who this is, but I love hearing positive things about the management of the franchise. It won't be long before we are a competent franchise that deserves being rooted for again.

We surely lead the league in Execs and coaches. Interesting he'll be on the headset. Would think just to listen only. Get a feel for the O and D coaches and post game analysis. Seems a weird hire but he's highly thought of though I can't see how his league job makes a fit for this roll- Not that I even understand the roll !
