Justin Jefferson: Jets cleared for takeoff for 5 years (New contract! p.10)

He's just a kind, cheerful, driven, hard-working, humble, dude. We're lucky to have him.

In Anthony Edwards, and Justin Jefferson, Minnesota have guys that could all have legitimate cases to be one the face of their respective leagues. Royce Lewis has a long way to go, but if he can stay healthy, he has the makings of that type of guy. I'm hoping that Jesper Wallstedt becomes that for the Wild.

Tyreek Hill has agreed to a restructured deal with the Dolphins that will pay him $90 million over the next three seasons with $65 million guaranteed.

While Hill did not have any new years added to his contract, his four-year total of fully guaranteed money is now $106.5 million.

This just in, Jefferson is elite. OK, you already knew that.

But a particularly impressive part of camp is how consistently the All-Pro receiver and Darnold have been connecting on a variety of routes.

It's been just two months since the duo threw and caught together for the first time (during mandatory minicamp), but their rhythm is more like that of longstanding bandmates.

ESPN on Monday ranked Jefferson the best non-quarterback and No. 3 player overall in its ranking that's designed to predict the Top 100 players for the season. The Vikings receiver checked in at No. 2 in 2023.

Jefferson is bookended by Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes (No. 1) and Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson (No. 2), and Cleveland edge defender Myles Garrett (No. 4) and Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen (No. 5).

Jefferson is one of three wide receivers squeezed into the top 10, along with college teammate and Cincinnati star Ja'Marr Chase (No. 6) and dangerously fast Dolphins pass-catcher Tyreek Hill (No. 8). CeeDee Lamb of the Cowboys, at No. 11, is the only other wideout forecasted in the first 20 spots.

Nineteen receivers in total were designated as Top 100 players.

Last year, Jefferson appeared in a career-low 10 games but managed a career-high 107.4 receiving yards per contest. His career average of 98.3 yards is tops in NFL history among players with at least 50 games.

The drama continues for the Bengals and receiver Ja’Marr Chase. Once again, Chase is not practicing on Thursday, according to multiple reporters on the scene. Chase came onto the field in street clothes as the team was going through drills early on in the session.

Things between the Bengals and Chase seemed alright earlier in the week, as head coach Zac Taylor said he was confident the receiver would play Week 1 after he’d returned to practice. But then that changed on Wednesday, as Chase was once again sitting out — just as he had throughout training camp.

PFT has confirmed that the 49ers and Aiyuk have agreed to terms on a four-year, $120 million extension. Adding in his pre-existing 2024 salary of $14.1 million, that puts him under contract for five years, at $134.1 million.

Adam Schefter@AdamSchefter

In the end, Brandon Aiyuk accepted the same deal that has been on the table since August. 12, per league sources. His hold-in did not alter any part of his new four-year, $120 million extension. He took the same deal that had been there in previous weeks. Hold-in over.

He also didn’t have to take any hits or exert any effort in training camp. I don’t think that he was unjustified in his actions. If you know, you’ll take the deal and they are going to give any more, you might as well extract something through other means.

Ian Rapoport, on Ja'Marr Chase:

"My understanding is that the two sides are still discussing a long-term extension, that, if he got it, would make him either: Tied for the highest-paid receiver with Justin Jefferson, or beating Justin Jefferson by one cent, which I believe is Chase's goal."

What can I say about the receiver that hasn’t already been said? It’s unlikely there’s anything relevant that needs to be added. So, let’s repeat the obvious.

Justin Jefferson is the face of the franchise and arguably the best player at his position. His well-deserved but record-breaking contract extension didn’t cause any headaches (especially compared to other wideouts around the league). His infectious personality has been fun to watch throughout the years.

An elite receiver without any diva characteristics is rare, but the Vikings found one. Barring injury, he will produce his annual 1,000 yards, and he will likely come close to the 2,000 yards.

The issue I have with what appears is just a want to skip training camp is that he won't really be in football shape come Week 1.  Yes, it was a hold-in, he was there, but wasn't really doing any actual football work.  He's in prime position to pull a hamstring.

Jefferson needs eight catches to become the ninth Vikings player all-time with 400 career receptions.

The receiver is beginning the season with 5,899 receiving yards through 60 games played, which is a record total among players who began their careers during the Super Bowl era.

With 101 yards through the air, Jefferson can beat a record set by Hall of Famer Lance Alworth (with the Chargers in the AFL) for the fastest receiver to 6,000 yards. Alworth reached the mark in his 62nd game (1967 season).

Jefferson has posted 184 and 150 receiving yards in his first two Week 1 games with O'Connell.
