Eleven of those kickoffs reached the end zone, and eight resulted in touchbacks. Minnesota seemed perfectly fine with opting for touchbacks while playing with the lead. Makes sense...why risk allowing the opposing team to get a spark when they're down.
swede700
As I suspected, it has to do with the new kickoff, as it takes a more "punt return" style of skillset.
vike daddy
Gaskin, a seventh-round pick of the Dolphins in 2019, spent four years in Miami. Last year, he spent time with the Vikings and Rams. He has six career kickoff returns. Last year, he appeared in three total games but generated no statistics. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/myles-gaskin-will-be-vikings-rb3-and-kick-returner

But, I know what he was trying to say.

vike daddy
Through two games, the dynamic kickoff has largely gone as expected. Returns haven’t gone up, in fact, they’ve gone down. Of 24 kickoffs, five have been returned. Nineteen have not. That translates to a 20.8-percent return rate. Or, conversely, as a 79.2-percent touchback rate. Last year, 74 percent of all kicks were touchbacks. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/through-two-games-24-kickoffs-and-five-returns
VikeManDan
Perhaps they should consider moving the kicker back if they want more kicks to land in the landing zone.

I feel like the only accomplishment from this might be that bad offenses have more space to punt from now lol
vike daddy
In Week One, across the NFL, kickers went a cumulative 21-for-23 on field goals of 50 yards or longer. That’s an absurd success rate of 91.3 percent, and it changes the way coaches strategize about what it means to be in field goal range. It used to be that coaches would only try a 50-yard field goal in desperation mode at the end of a game. Now every coach considers his team to be in field goal range once a field goal would only be 50 yards, and if you’re a kicker who can’t be trusted from 50 yards, you won’t have a job for long. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/nfl-kickers-went-21-for-23-on-50-yard-field-goals-in-week-one

Greg Joseph likely would have been an elite kicker in the 80s.

vike daddy
Steelers kicker Chris Boswell couldn’t have been any better on Sunday, and it’s no surprise he was named the AFC special teams player of the week for his efforts. Boswell was a perfect 6-for-6 on field goals, scoring all of the Steelers’ points in their 18-10 win over the Falcons. That included a 57-yard field goal, a 56-yard field goal and a 51-yard field goal. But that’s not all Boswell did: When Steelers punter Cameron Johnston left the game with an injury, Boswell came in and punted in Johnston’s place, hitting a 43-yard punt. Boswell also had to kick one of his field goals with a backup holder because of Johnston’s absence. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/chris-boswells-perfect-game-earns-afc-special-teams-player-of-the-week-award
