Chicago Cubs Thread - The Ricketts are too poor to pay players

What an awesome win on Monday, followed by a dreadful performance last night.  Chase Anderson isn't good and the offense couldn't do anything against him.  Chatwood was actually less crappy than he's been of late, but at some point he's going to have to start going deeper into games.  KB and Javy both need a breather or something, as they are looking terrible at the plate.

Also, I'm really interested in following the 2018 Cubs' Draft Class.  Reportedly, the Cubs specifically chose guys that had 4 things this draft: 1.  Speed; 2.  Good bat to ball skills;;3.  Scored in the upper echelon on their private cognitive skills test; and 4. Performed well in a wood bat league if a collegiate player.  There were probably a few other things that went into their decision making, but these are the ones that stood out.  They completely bucked the industry on most of their picks and went out and chose "their guys".  Brennen Davis, the prep CFer who was the 2nd round pick, had question marks put on his bat to ball skills by several scouts, but he has top of the scale speed and he reportedly aced the cognitive skills test.  As you can imagine, there is very little info on what exactly the cognitive skills test is, but the Cubs believe it can accurately predict how good a player is/will be at diagnosing the pitch when it's coming out of the pitcher's hand.  We all know how vital that is if a hitter is going to succeed.  Cubs also stated they believe that with launch angle changes and the like, it's far easier to add power to someone's game than it is to get them to be able to make consistent contact or recognize breaking pitches.

If you go by the draft lists, this one was a headscratcher.  If you buy into the Cubs' braintrust, you can't help but get a little excited about them taking all these hitters.  I fall somewhere in the middle, tbh.  They could come out of this looking like the smartest people in baseball and way ahead of the rest of the league by discovering a better way to scout.  Or they could look like idiots by ignoring plenty of the other traditional scouting methods that says this draft class won't be anything much.
