Week 2: non-Viking games

The Giants made a kind of history they would have preferred not to make today.

In today’s 21-18 loss to the Commanders, the Giants scored three touchdowns, allowed zero touchdowns, and still lost the game. It was only the second time in NFL history that a team lost while scoring three touchdowns and allowing none.

The only other time it happened was in 1989, when the Vikings beat the Rams 23-21. The Vikings Vikings kicker Rich Karlis hit seven field goals in regulation, while the Rams scored three touchdowns and three extra points to make it 21-21 at the end of the fourth quarter. In overtime the Vikings scored a safety to win 23-21.

The Jets celebrated a 24-17 win over the Titans, but there’s still plenty to clean up for the AFC East club. Aaron Rodgers threw touchdowns to Allen and running back Breece Hall, but the Jets had three three-and-outs and six punts over the course of the afternoon. Rodgers hit Garrett Wilson for a big play to set up the final touchdown and there were other good signs that the team will look to tease into a more consistent attack in the coming weeks.

The late stops helped close the door on Tennessee, but the defense was still more lax than the Jets would like and future efforts won’t have edge rusher Jermaine Johnson. The 2022 first-round pick was carted off and reports indicate he tore his Achilles.

Cardinals WR Marvin Harrison Jr. is the first rookie to have 4+ receptions and 2+ receiving TD in a first quarter since his dad, Colts WR Marvin Harrison, did it in 1996. In fact, Harrison Jr. had more receiving yards (130) in the first quarter in Week 2 than his dad had in any single game as a rookie in 1996.
