Let's Talk Defense

Plus add in the new rules imposed to make offenses better. It’s harder to have good defenses now.

Yup. Our offense is ahead offensive trends, our defense is about even with defensive trends.

Like I know plenty of people that pull the “I don’t care about what other teams do”....then what the hell do you track progress against? The rules have changed to the point that comparing the ‘90’s defense to the 2010’s defense is completely pointless. Your comparing a kiwi to an avacado to see what apple is the most ripe.

Measure it to the average change in defense of the NFL and you’ll quickly realize this “downfall” isn’t as bad as most make it out to be.

Also, side note, look at penalties and how we’re up in them, mostly DPI, and it coninsides with Jump Ball Joe in Baltimore. And the whole AFCN is up in them.

3-4, 4-3...........whatever.

tomlin is suppose to be a secondary guru. our secondary has pretty much sucked since hes been here.

who has he developed into a good/great DB?

The DBs they’ve drafted are still young and developing. Hilton was a pleasant surprise last year. Golson was a huge bust because of injuries which he not the coaches have any control over.

Robert Golden has developed well for an UDFA. Jury is still out on Burns, Davis, Sutton and now Edmunds.

Lewis was good. Cortez Allen was good for a while. Gay has been a pretty good CB for them for a while.

Also, again, the young DBs are still developing.

Butler, Frederrick, Richardson, Golson, Thomas also could barely stay healthy enough to whine about too.

How dare Tomlin not turn those 5th-7th rounders in to HoF players. I mean there are some many Richard Sherman’s out there. Why can’t we do that?

Agree, no way to compare, and it's like there is no defence anyways. That SB, every drive the teams went up the field at will. When a D play finally occurred, it was the difference, but the game was lame and the league found a way to remove D and score points .  We can't add any more pieces on offence  unless we sign Dez and gronk. It's time for this offence to live up to the hype, but will it.

what a post. I never realized that they wasted this many picks and got almost zero production. Is there another team in the league that has wasted that many picks in this amount of time on a position of need and got similar lack of results? What a waste, yet what has been done about it?

HOF'ers?

id be happy if he could develop a couple good dbs in a decade, regardless of round

most of them were 4th round or later

Ok so find how often (like what percent) late round picks contribute at that level, and you'll find what we got out of Gay, Lewis, Thomas....that likely beats the average.

Not a good list.  Many, many busts.  I don't care what round they were drafted in.

Good news is, it seems like for the first time in a VERY long time, there is an abundance of talented DBs.  I'm really hoping this young group Burns, Davis, Edmunds, & the Allens (both) turn into something good.  Hilton was a great add last year.  Hoping he can pick up where he left off last year.

the list above wouldn't be such a concern if we had our secondary that was pro bowl like as in some years past, but thats far from the reality. All these players were a hope to improve, yet we had to sign a Mitchell and now Burnett  as well as Haden who really saves the secondary IMO. Imagine last year without Haden?  Cortez Allen was the letdown and Lewis was a FO fail and the biggest loss that could have helped us the most at that time.  I still remember cortez allen after he got the deal and was in tomlins doghouse, on the sidelines in a game where he has his gloves hanging from the facemask , he looked as though he didn't care.
