And McDonalds’ kale salad has more calories and fat than a double Big Mac.

That's with dressing though right? Which is not what they are arguing here. A person with the knowledge and will power could and would just avoid the dressing.

Isn't that basically where "cravings" come from. A specific nutritional requirement you're not getting or need more of.

Pretty much. There’s also some stuff with the body craving fats and sugars that is separate from needed nutrients, but that has to do with survival stuff.

A lack of nutrients causes your body to crave more calories in hopes of getting the needed nutrients.

So you’re arguing these people are just starving and yearning for proper nutrition, that’s the motivating factor here?

So when they go somewhere where these foods do exist, that’s what they’re ordering?  These poor fat folks are just yearning for kale?

Without dressing, it’s more than a regular Big Mac.

That's clearly not what he is saying at all, and you know that.

If you’re arguing decent food isnt available, you’re wrong.

If you’re arguing that people have cravings and can’t control them, you’re wrong again.

People are fat, regardless of socioeconomic standing, because they over eat in relationship to what they need, almost universally.  What you eat is a controllable thing.  The idea that people are obese because of anything other than their own willful actions is absurd.

IMHO

Nearly 33 percent of adults who did not graduate high school were obese, compared with 21.5 percent of those who graduated from college or technical college.

More than 33 percent of adults who earn less than $15,000 per year are obese, compared with 24.6 percent of those who earned at least $50,000 per year.

Children of parents with less than 12 years of education had an obesity rate 3.1 times higher (30.4 percent) than those whose parents have a college degree (9.5 percent).

Children living below the federal household poverty level have an obesity rate 2.7 times higher (27.4 percent) than children living in households exceeding 400 percent of the federal poverty level.

Children living in low-income neighborhoods are 20 percent to 60 percent more likely to be obese or overweight than children living in high socioeconomic status neighborhoods and healthier built environments.

Girls (ages 10 to 17) living in neighbor- hoods having lower socioeconomic characteristics are more likely to be obese (19.2 percent) and overweight (35.7 percent) than are girls living in neighborhoods having higher socioeconomic characteristics.

There’s clearly more to the story than what you’re making of it.

"Cheap, healthy food isn't readily available" has always meant to me "Cheap, healthy food that is already prepared isn't readily available".

Beans, eggs, some vegetables (carrots, broccoli), bulk amounts of meat (especially chicken thighs, drumsticks) are all dirt cheap especially in larger amounts. Pair some staples like that with a $0.35 daily multi-vitamin and you're eating better than most of the country with low cost. Cook with healthy oils and butter (also not expensive when it comes to cost per calorie).

Outside of someone being force fed, or a child/mentally unhealthy individual being left to their own devices by bad guardians, you are absolutely right that everybody controls what goes into their bodies, which ultimately controls how fat they are.

What I am saying is that certain roadblocks make it harder to be healthy, and force you to work harder and make more sacrifices and require more willpower to attain a certain level of fitness compared to your average person.

I am certain that almost everybody in this thread would chose to just be fat given enough obstacles to overcome in order to not be fat.

There is another factor beyond poverty that seems to be correlated with differing levels of obesity among population subgroups.

I'd also be curious to see how obese adults compared to fit adults had both groups been given a delayed gratification test during childhood.
