"......Now the four-year, $94 million extension the Redskins signed Smith to after acquiring him hangs like a massive anchor on the franchise's neck.

According to Spotrac, Smith's deal counts $20.4 million against the salary cap in 2019 and $21.4 million against the cap in 2020. If the Redskins were to cut bait on Smith prior to the 2021 season, the cap hit would be staggering—so staggering that it's simply not an option. Per Jason Fitzgerald of Over the Cap, the $12 million insurance policy the team took out on Smith could offer some relief down the road, but that relief probably wouldn't come in 2019.

That puts the Redskins between a rock and a hard place—and then some.......

.......Per Over the Cap, the Redskins are presently sitting on about $21.4 million in cap space for the upcoming season. The team will no doubt wrangle some more with a restructure or three and a veteran cut or two, but Washington is outside the top 20 in cap space.

In other words, the higher-echelon free agents are out.

...

Cleveland's Tyrod Taylor took the Bills to the playoffs two years ago, but Taylor looked absolutely awful in his one year in Cleveland and could be set to join his third team in as many years. If Jacksonville releases Blake Bortles, he might welcome a chance to resurrect his career with a short-term deal that would give him a chance to play, but even Bortles won't come cheaply, and he was benched last year in favor of Cody Kessler.

Cody…Kessler.

Washington's best bet at procuring a stopgap might well be Ryan Fitzpatrick. The 36-year-old told Greg Auman of The Athletic that he's leaning toward playing a 15th season. While Fitzpatrick's roller coaster of a 2018 season had every bit as many lows as highs, he offers a modicum of upside and the experience of 126 career starts........"

Had to edit that down a bit, MK. Please don't post that much of a third party article.

Well, if they go that route, Smith's career is certainly done and McCoy's may be as well due to the Curse of Fitzpatrick.

Sorry it all seemed relevant.

Oh it is all relevant, but Webby has gotten smacked by other sites for copyright infringement from users grabbing articles wholesale and posting them on here on FF. If we take too much from those sites, it's effectively stealing their work (and more importantly, their traffic). The compromise we've come up with is to try to get the core concept the article and add the link to drive traffic to the site so they benefit from their work (and Webby doesn't get nasty-grams from other company's lawyers).

"How much?" That's kind of a judgment call. A reasonable guideline is roughly no more than three to four paragraphs or 10% of the article (whichever is smaller). In this particular case, I probably didn't edit it down enough, but like I said, it's a judgment call.

This team has no hope for the next three years if they don't just rip the bandaid off.

But Allen will likely have no hope if they do rip the bandaid off.

He has no hope regardless

Oh, he does since Snyder inexplicably seems to believe that Brice is the only one who can deliver a new stadium to him. Of course, Brice's performance is making it harder due to the repeatedly hurting the franchise and fanbase, but Snyder likes him some Brice.

Let's draft the 5’8 inch 170 pound Qb bc he’ll sell some tickets for one year! That’ll work!

The only problem is that it did work once before, but will now cost them too many draft picks to legitimately consider given the state of the salary cap.

Murray shouldn't be traded up for, he shouldn't even be a first round pick.

Also, that Can't be worse than the salary cap penalty of $18 million two years in a row in 2012 & 13 in a time where the salary cap was $50-80 million less than it is this year and will be next year.

That was 15% of our salary space at the time IIRC.  Alex Smith is costing us 13% for the next three if they go the route of "kicking the can down the road"

If the salary cap goes up to what it's projected to go up to - 187 to 191 million - Alex will count in-between 10-11% of salary cap next year & in 2020.
