Draft Lottery

nba-draft-lottery3.jpg

I have the #9 odds.    The top 5 odds are:

1.       Clippers (25.0%)

2.       Hawks  (19.9%)

3.       Thunder (15.6%)

4.       Hawks via Raptors (9.0%)

5.       Magic (9.0%)

Who’s it going to be…..

My pick at 9 held.  The Magic jumped into the top 3.  The Clippers fell to 3, the Magic have 2, and the Atlanta Hawks have won the lottery.

That means I have the #9, 20, 22, and 30th picks in this draft, which is way too many.  I'll have to flip some for future picks.

Staff Re-Signings/New Hires

NEW HIRE CFO – Christopher Murray – 4 years $950k - Business (B-), Potential (C), Economical Badge

NEW HIRE AGM – Oliver Saunders – 4 years $650k - Negotiation (B), Trades (B-), Potential (C), Wingman Badge

NEW HIRE Head Coach – Lebron James – 4 years $5 mil - Offense (C+), Defense (B-), Potential (B), Teacher and Former Player Badges

NEW HIRE Assistant Coach – Chris Paul – 4 years $1.25 mil - Offense (D+), Defense (B-), Potential (A-), Former Player Badge

RETAINED Head Scout – Kuba Gooding –4 years $400k - Scouting (A), Potential (C+), Hard Worker Badge

RETAINED Trainer – Sean Lee – 4 years $400k - Training (B+), Potential (B-), Fitness Guru and Healer Badges

I decided to change things up and hire a new Head Coach.  Lebron is a little raw but he has decent potential and the teacher badge.  My former assistant coach Carmelo Anthony turned down my extension and took the Hawks HC position.  So I signed another banana boat buddy to join Lebron.

Cap Problems

Ok, so with this glitch where I can't resign my own players before they hit FA, it means I can't utilize their Bird Rights.  What this means is that I can't go over the soft cap amount, which sucks.  Heading into this offseason, with my current roster and cap holds I'm $47.68 mil over the cap right now.  A lot of that can be made up by simply releasing cap holds, but that won't be enough.  I'm going to have to make some tough decisions about who stays and goes.

Players who won't be retained:

PG Trace Milton - $11.39 team option, with $18.03 mil cap hold.  So Milton has a current cap hold of $18.03 mil, but I could retain him for $11.39 mil if I wanted.  $11.39 mil is a lot of money for a backup PG who wasn't even in my rotation in the playoff series.  Saves $18.03 mil.

PF Brook Battle - $5.62 mil team option, with $10.73 mil cap hold.  I wasn't that impressed with Battle, he's an undersized defender who can't score.  I need the cap space too much.  Saves $10.73 mil.

SG Ron Hobbs - $9.14 mil cap hold.  Hobbs is a great shooter and started for me last year, but he's only 79 OVR and I can't justify paying him this amount, especially because he will probably want a contract more expensive than the $9.14 mil cap hold.  Saves $9.14 mil.

SG AC Holmes - $6.36 mil cap hold.  Pretty sure he's going to want a huge contract extension as his Potential Rating is still pretty high.  Saves $6.36 mil.

PG Douglas Welch - $6.00 mil cap hold.  I might see if he wants to come back on a cheap contract, but I'll be lifting his cap hold.  Saves $6.00 mil.

C Steven Adams - $4.20 mil cap hold.  Aging mentor, time to move on.  Saves $4.20 mil.

SF Corey Anderson - $1.50 mil cap hold.  He's going to want more money than he's worth.  Saves $1.50 mil.

If my math is correct that should get me $8.28 mil under the cap.  I will need some to sign draft picks.  Also Randy Richmond's cap hold is currently $18.20 mil, its possible I can get him to sign a deal worth less per year than that.

Draft Picks

Round 1 - Pick 9

Round 1 - Pick 20

Round 1 - Pick 22

Round 1 - Pick 30

Round 2 - Pick 21

So the game doesn't show me anywhere how much each pick will cost me this year cap wise.  These are some former picks I had near the range: Chucky Norton, 19th, $2.65 mil.  Hobbs, 20, $2.75 mil, Garret Holmes, 23, $2.38 mil.  PF Brook Battle, 8th, $5.11 mil.  SF Ed Chambers, 30th, $2.02 mil.

It appears to me that I can't afford the 9th pick so i'll have to flip it for a future pick.  The 20 & 22 picks should get me some decent bench players, combined they shouldn't cost me more than $5.25 mil.  The 2nd rounder should be less than a mil, should give me a depth player for my bench on the cheap.  I might try to flip 30 for two 2nds, to see if I can break up that cost into 2 cheap bench players.

2027 NBA Draft

Draft Picks

Round 1 – 9 overall

Round 1 – 20 overall

Round 1 - 22 overall

Round 1 - 30 overall

Round 2 - 51 overall

Ok so I will have to be doing a lot of trades in this draft in order to preserve cap space.  I need cheap players to fill out my bench though, so this draft will be very important to my team.

SF Anderson Warner (75) goes #1 overall to the Hawks, which is a bit surprising because he's not the consensus top pick in this class.  #2 overall is SG Scot Westbrook (74) to the Magic, interesting that PF Antonis Papadopoulus has dropped despite being a 78 OVR with great potential.  He is a eurostash for 1 season though which is probably why he's dropping.  #3 is SF Lamond Holt (74) to the Clippers.  The Thunder select SG Kelvin Peters (72) at 4 and PG Duane Watkins (72) goes 5 to the Kings who traded up for him.

The Pistons trade Blake Griffin to the Wizards for the 6th pick and draft Padadopoulus.  Great trade for them! Thank god someone took him I would have been tempted to hold onto the 9th pick if he was there.

I'm on the clock at 9:

There's a pretty good PG named Emmanuel Sirven on the board here.  He has 11 badges, including Dimer, Flashy Passer, Lob City Passer, Pick & Roll Maestro, Limitless range, Catch & shoot, tear dropper, break starter, and hustle rebounder.  He's already 76 OVR, but he's a eurostash for 1 season.  That would cause problems for me because he would be around a $5 mil cap hold for the year but I wouldn't have him here to play.  On the other hand, he would probably improve a ton in his season in europe, then could come over and replace Peters as my starting PG next year.  Peters will only have 1 year left on his deal next year.  To afford him I would probably have to cut Chambers from the roster.

I was planning on trading this pick but I think Sirven could be a long term solution at PG for me (on a 4-year reasonable contract).  I think I'm going to take him here and figure it out later.

With the 9th pick in the NBA draft the Miami Heat select:

PG, Emmanuel Sirvin, France

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
4 PG/SG Emmanuel Sirvin 6'3" 218 lbs 6'9" France 76 B

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C- B- A- D- C+ B+ D+ B- C+

Pretty good length for a PG, his athleticism isn't amazing (75 SPD, 89 SPD, 97 LQ) but he should be a great passer and great shooter in time.

Time to sim to 20.

Here's the top prospects available at 20:

PG Brook Mills

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
18 PG Brook Mills 6'1" 180 6'4" Baylor 69 B

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C- B- B- D- C+ B+ D- C C+

Mills is a good athlete with 86 SPD, 92 ACC, 95 LQ and is a decent shooter and passer for a rookie.  He will need to work on his defense, and his only badge is the Difficult shots badge.  He would likely be a career backup behind Peters this year, and then Sirven next year.

SF Christopher Perkinson

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
20 SF Christopher Perkinson 6'9" 228 lbs 7'0" Cincinnati 69 B+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C B- B D+ C- C C C C

Perkinson is pretty raw, but he's a solid shooter with good length.  His athleticism is pretty average for a wing (73 SPD, 76 ACC, 66 LQ), but his length should make up for some of that.  He can probably play some minutes at the 4 with his size too.  His only badge is the Pick & Popper badge.  He has a pretty good Potential Rating for this late in the draft.

SG Peter Woodson

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
23 SG/SF Peter Woodson 6'7" 204 7'3" Georgia Tech 71 B-

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
B- B- B+ D C- C- C- D+ B+

Woodson has good length for a 2 guard and is a good athlete (91 SPD, 86 ACC, 62 LQ).  He's a solid shooter already but needs to work on his defense.  His only badge is Chase Down Artist, which isn't really important for a Guard, and his potential rating is pretty low.

I really could take any one of the three guys here.  Backup SF is probably one of my biggest needs if I have to cut Chambers.  However, I feel Mills might be the BPA here.  I'm going to go Mills here and one of the other two will have to be available with my next pick:

With the 20th pick in the NBA draft the Miami Heat select:

PG, Brook Mills, Baylor

He will play minutes this year as my primary backup PG.

Ok so the Bucks took another PG at 21 so Woodson and Perkinson are still available here.  Thinking about my needs here, I have a lot of guys that can play the SF/PF roles, but have limited guys available to play SG.  Woodson can play minutes at SF too.  I think he fits my bench needs better.

With the 22nd pick in the NBA draft the Miami Heat select:

SG, Peter Woodson, Georgia Tech

He should fill a versatile backup roll off the bench.

Perkinson went 28th to the Knicks.

*TRADE*

LA Clippers Receive

#30 overall

Miami Heat Receive

#31 overall

2031 2nd Round Pick

This trade gives the Clippers a prospect with 2 additional years on his rookie deal and saves me about a million dollars in cap space.

With the 31st pick in the NBA draft the Miami Heat select:

SF, Lonnie Lawrence, Kansas

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
49 SF/PF Lonnie Lawrence 6'8" 243 lbs 7'2" Kansas 69 C+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
D D B D C- C+ C- C- C

His Potential Rating isn't great but he does have good size and athleticism (86 SPD, 73 ACC, 84 LQ).  He will be a serviceable 3 point shooter but needs to work on his defense.  He doesn't have any badges.

With the 51st pick in the NBA draft the Miami Heat select:

C, Mac Hickson, Houston

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
21 C Mac Hickson 7'1" 223 7'5" Houston 67 B

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
D C- C- C D- D+ C+ C+ D

Stretch 5 prospect with good length.  He'll never been an elite defender but his size should help.  Long term prospect that may never pay dividends.  His Potential Rating is solid for this late in the draft.  He doesn't have any badges.

That wraps up this draft.  Hopefully these guys can fill some bench minutes this year because I'm going to be losing a lot in free agency.

Player/Team Options

SG Ivan Bosnjak (81) – $5.98 mil – He will probably start at SG this year.

PG Trace Milton (80) - $11.39 mil (declined) - I can't afford to retain him and drafted his replacement.

PF Brook Battle (80) - $5.62 mil (declined) - I can't afford him.

SF Ed Chambers (79) - $4.02 mil (declined) - I can't afford to retain him and drafted his replacement.

PF Bradford Peters (78) - $10.09 mil - He will start at PG this year.

Qualifying Offers

SG Ron Hobbs (79) - $8.87 mil (declined) - he started last year but I can't afford to retain him.

SG AC Holmes (79) - $6.12 mil (declined) - I groomed this guy from an UDFA but now I can't afford him.

SF Corey Anderson (76) - $1.88 mil (declined) - he's nothing special and I need the cap space.

Free Agency

SF Randy Richmond agrees to a 5-year $100 mil contract.  He's one of my best players, great to have him back!

I still only have 11 players on the roster.  After re-signing Richmond I have $17.75 mil in cap space left.  Time to fill out the rest of my roster.  Its possible I can bring some of my other guys back.

PG Douglas Welch agreed to a 2-year $11 mil contract.  He's back again, he's a great passer.  The 2nd year is a team option so I can decline it if I want.

SG Ron Hobbs agreed to a 2-year $10 mil contract.  Like Welch the 2nd year is a team option.

PF Dwayne Pearson (77) agreed to a 2-year $8 mil contract.  Another team option, Pearson was a first round pick in the 2019 draft and is a stretch 4.  He will give me depth at PF.

SF Yuta Watanabe (78) agreed to a 2-year $6 mil contract.  He joined my team after the 2019 draft an a UDFA but I didn't retain him after he wanted a huge contract.  He should give me good depth at SF.

Major Contract Signings:

PF Steve Garner (86) – Mavericks – 4 years, $91.59 mil (26 years and their starter, another undrafted player)

SF Richie Richmond (82) - Rockets - 3 years, $54.50 mil (27, he's their starter, #15 pick in 2022)

PF Kyle Kuzma (84) - Hawks - 4 years, $117.54 mil (this feels expensive, he's currently 32 and they have younger options on the roster)

C Brandon Stallworth (95) - Knicks - 5 years, $180.48 mil (24, he's one of the best players in the league, #1 pick 2023)

PF Chad Gibbs (82) - Magic - 4 years, $76.91 mil (30, former 2nd round pick 2020, he's a good backup)

SF Randy Richmond (83) - Heat - 5 years, $100 mil (28, I paid a lot to retain him but got him to agree to an extra year)

PF AC Willis (81) - Hawks - 3 years, $52.15 mil (28, this guy is the reason they shouldn't have signed Kuzma, #9 pick 2021)

PG Hans Meier (89) - Grizzlies - 5 years, $153.54 mil (27, really good player, #8 pick 2021)

SF Jake Ferrell (83) - Pelicans - 4 years, $73.61 mil (30, he's their 6th man, feels like a lot of money, #11 pick 2020)

SF Enrique Nunnally (90) - Pelicans - 5 years, $151.49 mil (25, 2026 Most Improved Player, #9 pick 2023)

PF Horace Murphy (87) - Bucks - 5 years, $162.47 mil (28, he's their 2nd best player, #16 pick 2023)

PF Mike Payton (85) - Jazz - 5 years, $152.20 mil (25, he's their starter, #17 pick 2023)

PF Dustin Knight (84) - Hornets - 4 years, $104.63 mil (26, he's a starter, #23 pick 2022)

C Jordan Fletcher (81) - Celtics - 3 years, $53.35 mil (25, he's their starter but nothing special, this contract isn't bad though, #26 pick 2023)

PF Kaya Akyel (84) - 76ers - 4 years, $89.02 mil (26, he starts, #27, 2022)

SG Macolm Brand (83) - Pacers - 4 years, $101.94 mil (25, he's their 3rd guard but starters are aging, #15 pick 2023)

SG Mikal Bridges (84) - Cavaliers - 4 years, $74.16 mil (31, he's aging but a big part of their rotation)

SF Eddie Harmon (85) - Pistons - 4 years, $104.24 mil (30, he's their 2nd best player but aging, #8 pick 2020)

C Dylan Meekins (84) - Pacers - 3 years, $66.97 mil (26, he doesn't start, undrafted, feels like overpay for backup center)

PG Trae Young (87) - Trailblazers - 5 years, $167.42 mil (still only 28)

PG Shannon Steele () - Nets - $101.38 mil ()

PG Theo Green () - Pistons - $73.03 mil ()

That glitch is so stupid man.

Crazy that guy went up to 87, I thought they nerfed the development on international guys wow. Did he gain badges?

So his draft writeup was this:

19 PF Pavao Popovic 6'8" 198 7'3' Croatia 69 B+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS

And he's now at this:

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
A+ C+ D- A- A- C+ A- A A-

Also I didn't record any Badges when he was drafted, now he has HOF level Pick & Roller, and bronze level: Charge Card, Difficult Shots, Up & Under Specialist.

In order to get my best 5 on the floor I'm moving Randy Richmond to SG.  That will let Popovich enter the starting lineup at SF.  I'm going to start Welch at PG just because he's a great passer and I don't need another scorer in the starting lineup.  Peters will come off the bench.  Bosnjak has progressed well, but with Hobbs back I'll probably have to play Bosnjak at SF with my 2nd unit.  Pearson and Palmer will round out my 2nd unit, which means Mills, Watanabe, Lawrence and Hickson will be outside of the rotation unless injury occurs.

Its frustrating that the contract signings and extensions are so unrealistic.  I just checked and every team in the league but mine is over the luxury tax, and there are many that are $100+ mil over the luxury tax line.  Which is ridiculous.  Its like I'm the only team in the league that has to abide by the salary cap.
