I just added this summary to the OP.  Needless to say my record as Heat GM has been awful.  I'll be lucky if I don't get fired soon.

Draft Lottery

nba-draft-lottery3.jpg

I currently have the #1 and #13 odds.  I have the rights to the Magic pick too  The top 5 odds are:

1.       Heat (25.0%)

2.       Mavericks (19.9%)

3.       Lakers (15.6%)

4.       Cavaliers (9.0%)

5.       Thunder (9.0%)

Who’s it going to be…..

My pick held at 13.  The Wizards and Thunder jumped into the top 3.  The Lakers fell to 5.  The Mavericks fell to 4.  Ouch, I fell to 3.  The Wizards landed 2 and Thunder won the lottery.

I currently have 3, 13, 30 and 31 in this draft.

2024 NBA Draft

Draft Picks

Round 1 – 3 overall

Round 1 – 13 overall

Round 1 - 30 overall

Round 2 - 31 overall

This draft is full of a lot of raw players that will need time to develop.  There is no clear cut #1 prospect in this class, and I'm not sure who I even want to be available at 3.  I'll probably consider trade down options because I don't know if there's that much of a difference picking 3 from 10 in this class.

The Thunder select PG Wallace McLeod with the #1 overall pick, according to the draft rankings he was the top prospect but I wasn't blown away by him.  PG Trevor Graham went #2 to the Wizards, he was a solid athlete I probably would have considered him at 3.  I'm on the clock.

Here are the best players available at 3:

SF/SG Herbert Freeman

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
2 SF/SG Herbert Freeman 6'7" 208 6'9" California 78 A+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C+ D+ B- C- B+ C- C C A-

Freeman is one of the best athletes in this class (91 SPD, 82 ACC, 99 LQ) but lacks the size to play SF.  He would play SG for me.  He's a pretty poor shooter, and is limited offensively all around.  He's a pretty good defensive player already though.  He also only has the Putback King badge as his only badge, which is pretty worthless for a Guard.  At 78 OVR he's the 2nd highest OVR rating in this class but that would probably fall when I switch him to SG.  His A+ potential rating is excellent.

PG Trace Milton

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
4 PG Trace Milton 5'11" 184 6'2" Canada 79 B+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C B- C D- C+ A- D+ C+ B

Milton is an undersized pass first PG that is the highest OVR player in this class (79) and is bolstered by some pretty good Badges: Acrobat, Ankle Breaker, Flashy Passer, Lob City Passer, & Pick & Roll Maestro.  He's also a solid athlete with (86 SPD, 98 ACC, 79 LQ).  He isn't a good shooter though, and his defense needs work.  He has the lowest Potential Rating of all the top 10 prospects (but he's already the highest OVR so that offsets it some).

SG/PG Nienyuan Li

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
6 SG/PG Nienyuan Li 6'5" 200 6'3" China 72 A+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C+ C+ A D C C D C+ B

Li's wingspan is a joke, I would probably need to play him at PG.  He's a very good 3 point shooter, and has the Catch & Shoot badge.  He's a solid athlete (88 SPD, 83 ACC, 76 LQ) but needs to work on his defense.  He has one of the best Potential Ratings in the draft but is only a 72 OVR right now, and that could possibly drop when I move him to PG.

I wasn't offered any good trade offers for this pick (I don't blame them).  So my options are an athlete defensive SG, a pass first PG, or a shoot first PG.  I don't think Li is worth a pick this high, so to me its down to Freeman or Milton.  Freeman has a higher potential rating but Milton has better badges.  I've been really disappointed with my assist numbers, and I'm wary about having to move Freeman to another position, so I think Milton should be the pick.

With the 3rd pick in the NBA draft the Miami Heat select:

PG Trace Milton, Canada

Uv5WYnVm.jpg

At 79 OVR he'll probably start right away.  I'll have to trade away my current starter.

I'm not on the clock again until 13.  Time to sim.  The Mavs took Nienyuan Li at 4.  Herbert Freeman went 5 to the Lakers.

Here's the top players available at 13:

PG Wendell Ingram

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
14 PG Wendell Ingram 6'3" 187 6'6" La Salle 74 B-

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C+ A- A- D- B- B- C- C- A-

Another PG, this draft is littered with them.  Ingram is an interesting prospect because he's already kind of good at everything that matters for a PG.  He can shoot, he's a solid defender and passer.  His IQ rating is pretty low for a PG though.  He has good badges with Acrobat, Pick Pocket and Posterizer.  He's a weird athlete though with high SPD (99) and LQ (92) but only 64 ACC.  Not sure what that would do to him on the court.  He also has a low Potential Rating.  He's probably a pretty good backup PG prospect.

SG Ivan Bosnjak

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
15 SG Ivan Bosnjak 6'6" 211 6'11' Croatia 74 B+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
B- D+ D+ D+ C+ C D+ C- A

This guy is really raw, he really isn't good at anything right now.  He does have good size for a 2 Guard, and has the Acrobat and Posterizer badges.  His athleticism is fantastic though (86 SPD, 99 ACC, 89 LQ with a 90 Vert).  He projects as a slasher/perimeter defender.  He's the kind of guy that could probably run my 2nd team offense in the pick and roll.  His potential rating is better than Ingram's too.

SF Ed Chambers

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
21 SF Ed Chambers 6'9" 220 7'1" NCState 73 B-

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C- B A+ D+ C C C- C C+

Chambers is one of the best shooters in this class and pairs that with the Catch & Shoot and Limitless Range badges, which are probably the two best a shooter can have.  He isn't really good at anything else though, and his athleticism (71 SPD, 68 ACC, 71 LQ) would make him pretty terrible on defense.  With his size a move to PF would make sense except he's a terrible interior defender and can't rebound.  He basically profiles as a shooting specialist.

I really like the long term upside of Bosnjak, plus he's only 20 years old so I think he's going to be my pick here.

With the 13th pick in the NBA draft the Miami Heat select:

SG Ivan Bosnjak, Croatia

Dp0SOCOm.jpg

Long term play but I hope it pans out.

I have two more picks, at 30 & 31.  Time to sim.  Ingram went 17 to the Raptors, but surprisingly Chambers has fallen all the way to 30 lol.  Wow.

With the 30th pick in the NBA draft the Miami Heat select:

SF Ed Chambers, NC State

okXMHMQm.jpg

Shooting specialist.  Will always be a backup.

I'm on the clock again at 31.  I'm not sure I want to add 4 rookies to the roster this year so I'm going to draft a Euro stash with this pick.

With the 31st pick in the NBA draft the Miami Heat select:

PF Pavao Popovic, Canada

kPPiCRkm.jpg

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
19 PF Pavao Popovic 6'8" 198 7'3' Croatia 69 B+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C- C- F C C+ C- B- C+ C-

He won't come to the NBA for 3 years.  Undersized 4 who can't shoot.  He projects mostly as a defender/rebounder.  He has good potential though.  Probably a long term trade chip.

And another draft is complete.

Player/Team Options

C/PF Stanley Moncrief (88) – $13.62 mil – He's the best player on my team.

PG Doug Ervin (79) - $8.98 mil - I took him with the #5 pick a few years back but hasn't developed how I hoped.

PF Anthony Blackwell (79) - $4.41 mil - Good reserve.

C Anderson Phelps (78) - $4.80 mil - Currently my starting Center.

SF Randy Richmond (76) - $7.22 mil - started last year.  Has high potential.

PG Stephon Clancy (78) - no offer - I'm going to let him move on.  I haven't liked my PG production.

C Donovan Lewis (70) - $1.79 mil - backup Center prospect.

PLAYER OPTION - PF Draymond Green - $35.14 Mil - DECLINED.  WTF lol.  THANK GOD.

Los Angeles Clippers Receive

C Joffrey Lauvergne (80)

PG Doug Ervin (79)

SF Garrett Holmes (72)

Miami Heat Receive

2025 Clippers First Round Pick (unprotected)

C Bam Adebayo (84)

Adebayo comes back to the Heat after leaving in FA several years prior.  I didn't retain him when I drafted Stanley Moncrief, but have never really been able to find a quality starting Center since.  He can start for me this year while I try to figure out what to do at Center going forward.  The Clippers pick should hopefully be in the lottery.  Giving up Garrett Holmes sucks since I just drafted him last year, but he's already 24 and only has B- potential.

Free Agency

I need to sign a backup PG.

SG AC Holmes agreed to a 3-year, $14.00 mil contract.  This guy went undrafted but has B+ potential and A Physical.

PG Douglas Welch agreed to a 2-year, $16 mil contract.  He was the 10th pick in the 2019 draft, has good badges, can mentor.

SG Terrence Ross agreed to a 1-year, $4.0 mil contract.  Mentor for Hobbs.

Major Contract Signings:

SG Kyle Dudley (85) – Knicks – 4 years, $108.08 mil (#19 pick in 2021, he's their starter)

C Chip Brooks (81) - Hornets - 3 years, $54.00 mil (he's the 3rd center on their depth chart....)

PG Kemba Walker (86) - Suns - 4 years, $120.27 mil (he's already 34, this one could hurt)

C Karl-Anthony Towns (92) - Timberwolves - 5 years, $205.20 mil (still just 28 but that's a lot of money for 1 player)

PG Isaiah Taylor (82) - Pistons - 4 years, $69.49 mil (30 years old, not a starter, bad contract)

SF Kevin Knox (85) - Jazz - 4 years, $96.45 mil (him and Collins give them two really good wings)

C Jarrett Allen (85) - Hornets - 4 years, $99.14 mil (he's still only 26 and their starter)

SG Lonnie Walker (85) - Raptors - 4 years, $90.74 mil (he's just 25, solid signing)

C Harry Giles (81) - Kings - 4 years, $63.10 mil (another backup Center getting paid, why?)

SG Hasan Akyel (86) - Timberwolves - 4 years, $91.31 mil (this guy is awesome, great contract)

SG Douglas Blount (82) - Hornets - 4 years, $84.91 mil (man the Hornets must be broke now)

PF Brice Johnson (82) - Nets - 4 years, $65.29 mil (30 years old, not a starter, why?)

C Darnell O'Keady (82) - Nets - 4 years, $78.96 mil (27 years old and at least he starts)

PF Clyde Bryant (85) - Rockets - 3 years, $76.86 mil (25 and a starter, he can't shoot but is good otherwise)

PF Mitch Ewing (86) - Mavericks - 4 years, $118.96 mil (he's their 2nd best player and pretty good)

PF Cheick Diallo (81) - Kings - 4 years, $61.30 mil (he's 3rd on their PF depth chart....)

PG Isaac Bonga (82) - Raptors - 4 years, $72.59 mil (he's just 24 years old and tall.  Still feels like a lot of money though)

PF Gerald Lynch - Grizzlies - 5 years, $154.29 mil (wow good for Lynch.  Former Heat player and #2 overall pick in 2020.  He can't shoot but that doesn't matter playing next to Jaren Jackson)

This is most likely the worst roster in the NBA again this year.  Most of my team is still too young to make an impact.

So my owner randomly demanded that I trade Terrence Ross.  I'm on thin ice with him right now so I did what he wanted.  Cage was a first round pick in this previous draft so he's on a cheap 4 year contract.

10 PF Edwin Ireland 24 6'9" 253 6'11" Florida 4 72 A

Another draft with a franchise Center, and interesting enough his last name is Moncrief.  Maybe he's Stanley Moncrief's brother?  He looks like a legit stud.  All of the Guards are pretty good athletes, especially Corie Snyder.  Rasheed Holcomb is a best stretch 4.  Holcomb and Ellis are the best shooters in the group.
