2021 NBA Draft

Draft Picks

Round 1 – 1 overall

Round 1 – 5 overall

Round 1 - 18 overall

Round 2 – 47 overall

Round 2 - 51 overall

I have a bunch of picks this year, starting with #1 overall.  PF Stanley Moncrief is the top rated player in this draft, my only reservations about him is his thin frame for playing Center (He's going to have to play Center because of Lynch).  I can't think of a single starting NBA Center that is close to his 218 lb frame.  Mohamed Bamba is 221 lbs, Willie Cauley Stein is 240 lbs, Nerlens Noel is 220 lbs, Jacob Poeltl is only 230 lbs, Al Horford is 245 lbs, even 6'8" Montrezl Harrell is 240 lbs.  He is however a terrific defender and can shoot 3s.  Because of that he's actually a good fit next to Lynch who can't really stretch the defense out.  I'm not going to overthink this, he's the best player in this class I'll just have to make it work.

With the 1st pick in the NBA draft the Miami Heat select:

PF/C Stanley Moncrief, Mississippi

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
1 PF/C Stanley Moncrief 6'10" 218 7'1" Mississippi 83 A

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
B- B B+ B B C B A- B

He's actually a little shorter than what I though too, I usually never run with a sub 7'0" Center, but hey the NBA is changing.  Him and Lynch will make an interesting pairing.  His 73 SPD, 74 ACC, 83 LQ are quite impressive for a big, and he has the Charge Card, Defensive Stopper, Difficult Shots, Hustle Rebounder, Pick & Roller, Pick Dodger, and Rim Protector badges.

SF Conrad Shelton goes #2 to the Trailblazers, he's an athletic wing who can shoot.  PF Troy Peters goes #3 to the Wizards, that's a bummer I really liked him as a defensive big.  SF Jonathan Finley goes #4 to the Hawks, another athletic wing who can shoot.  I'm on the clock again.

Here's the top prospects available at 5:

SF/SG Tudor Paunescu

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
5 SF Tudor Paunescu*1 6'8" 222 7'1" Romania 77 B+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
B- B B C B C C- B- A-

Paunescu won't come over for another year, so he won't help me at all this season, he's a pretty good prospect though.  He's an all around good player who can shoot and play defense.  His 86 SPD, 73 ACC, 82 LQ is solid, although not spectacular as he'd probably play at the 2 for me.  He has good size though, and should be a good 3 & D player.  He only has one badge, Charge Card.

SG Ciro Padilla

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
8 SG/SF Ciro Padilla 6'6" 234 6'10" Argentia 68 A+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
D+ B- C D D C C- C- A-

Padilla has good size and the highest Potential Rating in the draft, he's really raw though. He isn't particularly good at anything right now, and he has no badges.  His 79 SPD, 70 ACC, 68 LQ are inferior to Paunescu.  This pick would basically be all in on his A+ potential, but Idk if I have that long to wait.

PG Doug Ervin

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
10 PG Doug Ervin 6'3" 181 6'10" Penn St 75 B-

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C A B+ D- C B D C B

Ervin's a pretty good PG prospect, he has good length for the position and his 87 SPD, 90 ACC, 66 LQ are solid.  He's a pretty good shooter but will need to work on his defense.  He also has a bunch of badges, Ankle Breaker, Catch & Shoot, Corner Specialist, Deep Range Deadeye, Difficult Shots, and Pick & Roll Maestro.  His only real downside is his relatively poor Potential Rating, which is very low for a Top 5 pick.

I think I've talked myself out of Padilla, so this is down to Ervin and Paunescu.

Paunescu is the better athlete, and bigger, but Ervin has more badges.  I also have to wait a year for Paunescu to get here.  I really feel like I need more talent at the PG position, because I want to move on from Fultz.  With that in mind I think Ervin has to be the pick.

With the 5th pick in the NBA draft the Miami Heat select:

PG, Doug Ervin, Penn State

kkKTukqm.jpg

I don't pick again till 18.  Paunescu fell all the way to pick 11, I guess people are scared away because he's not coming over for a year.  Interesting, Padilla has fallen all the way to 18....

That has me a little concerned about Padilla, because sometimes the players Potential Ratings shown are wrong, and that's all he has going for him.

Actually I'm not really going to debate this next pick there's a guy I real want available that fits a need:

With the 18th pick in the NBA draft the Miami Heat select:

C, Anderson Phelps, Georgetown

mJALYyxm.jpg

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
26 C Anderson Phelps 6'11" 257 7'5" Georgetown 72 A

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C- F F A C- D B- C C-

Phelps is a traditional defensive Center, I don't think he'll ever contribute much on offense.  I also wish he was a little taller, but he has a good wingspan.  He'll need to work on his Rebounding too.  He has the Bruiser, Lob City Finisher and Rim Protector badges.  He should be an excellent backup Center.

I have two second round picks, I'm not sure if there will be anyone worth taking that late but we will see.

*TRADE*

Golden State Warriors Receive

SF Derrick Jones Jr. (74)

47 overall pick

51 overall pick

Miami Heat Receive

PF Anthony Blackwell (73)

2022 2nd Round Pick

Blackwell was the 20th pick in this draft, so I'm swapping out Jones Jr. (who only has 1 year left on his contract) for a cheap 4 year contract.

That concludes another draft.  I hope Ervin's potential rating ends up higher than what was shown.  I hope I don't regret passing on Paunescu.  This draft really filled some of my biggest holes on the roster.

Player/Team Options

SF Allan Collins (89) – $10.37 mil – He's the best player on my team.

SG Alvin Duncan (80) - $3.68 mil - He's my starting SG.

SF Troy Brown Jr. (78) - $5.17 mil - Good prospect, he was my 6th man last year.

PF Dwayne Pearson (78) - $3.49 mil - Good backup, stretch 4.

SF Sammy Walker (70) - $1.68 mil - He's a long term development project.

Qualifying Offers

PG Markelle Fultz (84) - $15.98 mil – He's too valuable to just let walk, but I think I'm going to sign and trade him.

C Bam Adebayo (83) – no offer – I just replaced him in this draft, and honestly Centers don't pull much on the trade market.

I'm pretty disappointed with my current record, I thought I'd be more competitive than this.  The East looks like its a lot better this year.  I want to move Markelle Fultz here at the deadline because I have no plans to sign him to a long term extension this year, but I feel like if I do I'll guarantee that I won't make the playoffs.

UPDATE

Lol, well I didn't get a single offer for Fultz so I guess he's staying put.

Houston Rockets Receive

C Thon Maker (77)

2023 2nd Round Pick

Miami Heat Receive

C Dwight Howard (72)

2024 Rockets 1st Round Pick (top 3 protected)

Maker's deal is expiring and he's not in my rotation so I figured I'd try to get something for him.  The pick will likely be a very late first, but you never know.  Howard's deal is expiring and he can mentor for the remainder of the season.

Who’s it going to be…..

The Spurs fell to 3, my pick held at 2, and the Celtics won the lottery.  That is ridiculous, the Celtics don't need another #1 pick.

So I have the #2 and #19 picks in this draft.

My pick at 6 jumped into the top 3!  The Cavs fell to 6, my other pick fell to 5.  The Hawks fell all the way out to 4.  The Wizards got 3, holy crap I got 2 & 1!  Noooooooo.  Wait I forgot the protections!  Since it went in the top 3 the #2 pick stays with the Trailblazers, I still get #1 though.

What did you reroll or something? lol

I'm doing it different this year, usually I type all of this up in Word and copy/paste it into the forum.  This year I'm just copying posts from earlier in the thread and editing them.  Its caused some typos.

When I was younger and did a bunch of Madden sims like this, I usually liked to play at least one game a season even if I wasn't competitive mostly so I could see how the draft picks were initially and how they progressed.  Would have been interesting to see Collins as a rookie in year 2, then how was he improved in year 3, then year 4, etc....

I'm going to play the playoff series whenever I get to the playoffs.  I was pretty certain this was a playoff roster, I'm pretty disappointed I didn't make it this year.  I guess having it on Hard difficultly makes a big difference.
