Draft Lottery

nba-draft-lottery3.jpg

I have the #6 and 13th odds.    The top 5 odds are:

1.       Magic (25.0%)

2.       Clippers (19.9%)

3.       Grizzlies (15.6%)

4.       Warriors (9.0%)

5.       Cavaliers (9.0%)

Who’s it going to be…..

My first pick held at 13.  Lol, I swear I'm not rigging this, but my pick has jumped from 6 into the top 3.  I've been SUPER lucky with the lottery so far.  Last year I was terrible in the lottery.  The Cavliers have jumped in the top 3 as well.  That means the Warriors drop to 6, the Clippers have fallen to 5, ouch the Magic have fallen to 4, the Cavaliers have the 3rd pick, I have the #2 pick, and the Grizzlies have won the lottery.

That means I have the #2 and #13 picks in this draft.

2022 NBA Draft

Draft Picks

Round 1 – 2 overall

Round 1 – 13 overall

Round 2 - 35 overall

This isn't a very strong draft class, so I doubt I'll pick up anyone who can contribute right away.  I need to look for long term upside in this draft.  There's no concensus #1 pick in this class, but if I were to guess I would bet SF Rudolph Wilcox goes #1 overall.  He's 79 OVR and a solid prospect.  What the Grizzlies do at 1 could impact me at 2, so I'll have to see what they do first.

And as expected Rudolph Wilcox goes #1 to the Grizzlies, I'm on the clock.

Here's who I think are the best prospects available at 2:

PF Clifton Cheaney

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
1 PF Clifton Cheaney 6'9" 227 7'1" Florida 71 B+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C+ B- D- C+ C C B- B B+

This guy is supposedly the best prospect in the class according to DraftExpress.  He's definitely a good athlete for a big, 76 SPD, 81 ACC, 76 LQ, and he has the Acrobat, Charge Card, Hustle Rebounder, Pick & Roller, & Putback King badges.  But he can't shoot 3s, and he doesn't have any of the defensive badges that Lynch has for me, plus he's only 71 OVR.  I guess I don't really see the upside here.

SF Leon Fowlkes

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
3 SF Leon Fowlkes 6'7" 221 6'10" Notre Dame 72 A

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C+ B C+ C C- B C B C

Fowlkes has good upside with A potential rating, and is a passable athlete, 72 SPD, 72 ACC, 70 LQ.  His shooting needs work but that'll probably come in time, and he's a good passer for his position.  His only badges are the Pick & Popper and Pick & Roller badges.  I feel like he'd make an awesome pick at 13 but a #2 overall pick?  He doesn't feel like an elite prospect.

PG Anders Larsson

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
4 PG Anders Larsson 6'4" 193 6'6" Sweden 72 A-

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
D+ B- B+ F C+ A- D B- C+

Larsson is a solid PG prospect, he's a decent shooter and excellent passer already.  He needs some work on defense but he should develop that.  With 81 SPD, 92 ACC, 93 LQ, he's a pretty good athlete.  He also has the Break Starter, Dimer, Flashy Passer, Lob City Passer, and Pick & Roll Maestro badges.  Those are all badges I'd want in my PG.  The issue is I'd be taking ANOTHER PG prospect.  I already have Norton and Ervin coming up, I guess I could move Norton to backup 2 guard.

SF Randy Richmond

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
9 SF Randy Richmond 6'8" 234 7'3" Baylor 72 A-

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
B- C+ C D+ B- C- C+ C- A

Randy Richmond is probably one of the coolest prospect names I've seen lol.  He sounds like a WWF wrestler from the 80s.  He has good length, and with 70 SPD, 83 ACC, 85 LQ, is a pretty good athlete for a Forward.  He's a little raw but looks like he'll be a decent shooter and perimeter defender after some growth.  His only badge is Posterizer, which means he should be an awesome dunker.  He might be a good slasher right away.

I'm torn here between Richmond and Larsson.  I see the merits in both.  Neither are going to start right away.  I honestly don't think either of these guys is worthy of the #2 pick, and the contract I have to pay them at that slot.  I'm going to look to see if I can move down to lower the contract I'm going to have to pay one of these guys.

*TRADE*

LA Clippers Receive

#2 overall

#35 overall

2025 Heat 1st Round Pick (unprotected)

Miami Heat Receive

#5 overall

2023 2nd Round Pick

2023 Clippers 1st Round Pick (top 3 protected)

I'll take the cost savings here by trading down.  If one of my guys goes in the next few picks then the decision will be made for me.  This is a bit of a gamble for me as I'm giving up my 2025 first unprotected, but I should be a solid playoff team by then.  The Clippers should be pretty bad next year so their first could be worth a lot more.

The Clippers take PG Gabe Galloway at 2, he was a less talented Larsson so I don't really get that pick.  Then Larsson goes #3 to the Cavaliers, bummer I was probably going to take him.  #4 to the Magic is SG Darren Boyd, he's a really talented shooter but is only 6'1".

I'm back on the clock, I guess Richmond is the pick.

With the 5th pick in the NBA draft the Miami Heat select:

SF Randy Richmond, Baylor

WrRUUn9m.jpg

He's definitey raw, but if he develops I could put him as the starting 3 and move Collins to the 2.

Leon Fowlkes went 8th to the Wizards, and "#1 prospect" Clifton Cheaney falls all the way to the Suns at 10.  I'm on the clock again at 13:

PG Stephon Clancy

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
12 PG Stephon Clancy 6'0" 168 6'3" Kentucky 75 B-

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C+ C- C+ D- C A- D+ B+ B-

He's a strong passer and the best athlete left in the draft, 82 SPD, 96 ACC, 78 LQ, 92 Vertical.  He'll need the vertical because he's tiny.  He has the Ankle Breaker, Flashy Passer, Lob City Passer, Pick & Roll Maestro and Pick Dodger badges.  He projects as a quality backup PG.

C Perry Hardy

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
28 C Perry Hardy 7'1" 262 7'2" New Mexico 74 B-

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
D+ A- F A- D+ C B- A- D

Hardy is an old school defensive Center.  His basetball IQ rating is intriguing for a Center, and he's a solid interior defender already.  He also has a decent mid-range game.  He has the Bruiser, Hustle Rebounder, Pick & Popper, Pick & Roller and Pick Dodger badges.  His potential is less than ideal and he isn't a great athlete, 43 SPD, 46 ACC, 41 LQ.

That's it, this is a pretty weak draft class.  I like Hardy but he doesn't have elite length, he's a terrible athlete and he doesn't have the Rim Protector badge, so I think I'm going to go with Clancy here.

With the 13th pick in the NBA draft the Miami Heat select:

PG Stephon Clancy, Kentucky

eD8xKGBm.jpg

This makes the 3rd draft in a row where I've selected a PG prospect, but I'm still not sure if I have the position figured out yet.

That concludes this draft, two long term raw prospects.

Player/Team Options

SF Allan Collins (92) – $13.08 mil – He's the best player on my team. He's going to want a very expensive extension this season.

SG Alvin Duncan (81) - $5.44 mil - He's my starting SG.

PF Gerald Lynch (82) - $9.47 mil - Starting PF.

PG Chucky Norton (81) - $2.92 mil - Good backup Guard.

PF Dwayne Pearson (80) - $5.35 mil - Good backup Stretch 4.

Qualifying Offers

SF Yuta Watanabe (78) - $1.16 mil – This guy is a UDFA I signed last year to a 2-way contract.  It appears he developed quite a bit during the season.  If someone offers him a bunch of money I'll let him walk but he's worth a qualifying offer.

SF Troy Brown Jr. (79) – $7.23 mil – He's a good reserve to have for now.  He's developed a lot but I'll be replacing him eventually.

PG Maurice Sharpe (78) - no offer - this is the other guy I had on a 2-way contract last year.  I don't need him now as I have a ton of PGs already.

SF Sammy Walker (73) - $2.09 mil - he's worth it at this money, he's an elite perimeter defender and doesn't whine for minutes.

Free Agency

I don't have any roster spots open if I'm retaining most of my guys.

The Timberwolves have offered SF Yuta Watanabe a 2-year $8.90 mil deal. At that price I think I'll match.

SF Sammy Walker and SF Troy Brown Jr. accepted their qualifying offers.

Major Contract Signings:

SF Luka Doncic – Mavericks – 4 years, $116.79 mil

C Wendall Carter Jr. – Bulls – 4 years, $116.79 mil

SF Gordon Hayward - Celtics - 4 years, $62.23 mil

C Deandre Ayton - Suns - 5 years, $157.53 mil

PG Dennis Smith Jr. - Cavaliers - 4 years, $106.47 mil

PF Marvin Bagley - Kings - 5 years, $149.19 mil

C Steven Adams - Bucks - 4 years, $92.97 mil

PF Jaren Jackson - Grizzlies - 5 years, $157.53 mil

C Montrezl Harrell - Pistons - 3 years, $51.88 mil

SF Miles Bridges - Hornets - 4 years, $88.41 mil

SF Michael Porter Jr. - Nuggets - 5 years, $155.43 mil

PF John Collins - Hawks - 4 years, $91.34 mil

PG Aaron Holiday - Pacers - 3 years, $73.90 mil

SG Dzanan Musa - Nets - 3 years, $89.89 mil

SG Donovan Mitchell - Clippers - 4 years, $116.79 mil (wow stole him)

SF Giovenco Esposito - Clippers - 3 years, $68.58 mil (this guy is a euro stash the Warriors drafted 3 years ago, he still hasn't come over he looks really good though)

PG Collin Sexton - Cavliers - 4 years, $108.00 mil

PG Anfernee Simons - Trailblazers - 4 years, $108.21 mil (why???)

C Allen Stafford - Jazz - 4 years, $116.79 mil

PG Markelle Fultz - Rockets - $116.79 mil (good luck I wasn't paying that)

- So a big power vacuum left the top when Lebron retired, Anthony Davis is now the best player in the NBA.

- We saw some regression at the top from the older players this year, their were 7 players 95+ OVR last year, this year there are 2.

- Klay Thompson was 18th on the list last year at 91 OVR, he regressed all the way to 86 OVR.  He's only 32 years old.

- John Wall dropped off the list, he was 22nd last year at 90 OVR, but now is 89 OVR and behind those shown above.

- Paul George was 90 OVR last year but dropped to 87 OVR.

- So I've sent Moncrief to the Strength and Weight gain offseason program in back to back years, and he's up to 240 lbs after starting at 218.  Also he Strength is 94 now, which is really strong.

- Allan Collins now has HOF level Acrobat badges, and Gold level: Deep Range Deadeye, Limitless Range, Pick & Popper, and Relentless Finisher.

- I moved Chucky Norton permanently to SG, as I think Ervin will make the better starting PG.  Its debatable who should be starting at the 2, Duncan is the better defender, Norton is a much better shooter.  I'm going to play Norton with the 2nd unit for now to give that unit more scoring.

- Backup PF Pearson now has HOF level Limitless Range.  For a PF.....

I'm currently tracking for my first playoff birth. I'm 7 games up over the Hawks so I'm sitting pretty good right now.  I also went through a month where both Ervin and Norton were out for 4 weeks at the same time, so I'm hoping my record in the second half is even better.

I might look around at some deals for guys with expiring deals at the deadline but I'm not going to do anything big.
