Let say Acuna breaks all records for arbitration. He would probably be looking at around 80 million in his 6 years. He signed for 100 for 8. He is probably bypassing 40-50 million by doing this, but he is playing with his best friend(who will get a contract soon), and he is getting paid his first two years instead of making the minimum. Yeah, its a discount, but no matter what he got, unless it was ungodly, it would be less than what he is worth WAR wise.

I don't think the answer here is necessarily go year to year. Acuna should have been able to beat Eloy Jiminez's deal or sign a smaller extension that maybe limits his arb payouts without the expense of delaying his FA. If he doesn't want to risk having something tragic happen, there are ways to do it without signing a decade long deal.

No doubt he should have got a major deal compared to Eloy. He hadn’t even played in the majors yet while Acuna tore the cover off the ball his rookie season
