When the window was opening was when they brought in Jayson Werth to bring leadership tp the clubhouse. The Cubs and Astros took it a step further by trading away just about all of their major league talent that wasn't pre-arbitration, setting that precedent to "tanking." But that’s not true. They tried signing free agents and they just wouldn’t sign. They were going after big money guys like Fielder. Bowden created a giant mess that had to be fixed.
