Portland Horned Owls

Motivation: It's week 10 of the BDL season and we're here, and not late.

Portland Offensive Game plan: Mahomes will throw the ball through the air, we will target out WRs, TEs, RBs in the passing game and move the ball through physics. We will also run the ball to keep the offense grounded and balanced, expect McCaffrey to get the bulk of the carries and be the engine of the offense.

Formations: Shotgun, I-Form, 3 wide, 4 wide, 5 wide, 2 TE, 2 RB etc. We'll use a variety of formations and keep a healthy balance. | Scheme:  Pass 60% to run 40%

Portland Offensive Gameplan: Come out with a strong passing game to set up the run and let Mahomes work his magic, we'll rotate our players as necessary to keep them fresh and give maximum effort. Specifically we'll be running outside a lot and using McCaffrey as a receiver since we feel he's a massive mismatch for their LBs and Safeties.

The Passing Game: With the best young QB in the NFL under center we feel confident we'll be able to get the passing game going early and often. Normally I would mock my opponent for their lack of a good secondary but Williamsport has a very good group of CBs, I expect Byron Jones will shadow Adams but that won't stop us from getting the ball to him when necessary if doubled we will however go elsewhere. Mike Williams will suit up as the no.2 WR and since he's such a massive target he'll used in short yardage situations and in the end-zone, he should also have a decent size advantage over Davis/Jackson/Sutton. Marvis Jones will be used our no.3 WR option and if Adams is doubled he'll get a bit more targets than he normally would,  McCaffrey will get at least 10 targets in this game and will be leaned on as the focal point of the offense, we'll be operating a pass heavy offense (60:40 split is the goal) with the focus on using play action and letting our WRs/RBs/TEs get the extra yards once the defense wears down from a punishing o-line.

The Running Game: With Mahomes and our weapons we feel Williamsport will devote extra resources to pass defense and we hope to take advantage of that by throwing the ball, we expect our o-line to win the battles in the trenches against a d-line lacking depth, with only 3 DTs on their active roster last week we expect to wear them down quite easily. McCaffrey will pass protect as needed, Barber will rotate in on about 10% of the snaps to keep him fresh and we'll run outside quite a bit along with using McCaffrey on screens.

The Blocking Unit: We'll execute blocking assignments as necessary, in a pinch Ben Jones will play C, Beachum plays OT if needed etc.

TDLR; Protect Mahomes, get McCaffrey the ball, score points, punish the defense, execute the play.

Portland Defensive Gameplan: We'll mostly be playing zone coverage with a mix of man, we'll focus on blitzing Dak and exposing Williamsport's issues along the o-line.

Formations:  4-3 [Base Defense] / 4-2-5 [Nickel] along with other various formations that depend on down&distance&situation| Scheme: 50% man to 50% Zone coverage, Cover 1, Cover 3, Cover 2 etc.

Pass Coverage: Trufant will get Ridley since we feel he is their best WR, Logan Ryan who despite some rumors is actually the Titans no.1 CB will cover Tate, Alexander will man the slot/cover the 3rd WR. No one will get extra attention in coverage and we'll all play our assignments, we'll play mostly the coverage listed in scheme with some man mixed in here and there. Dallas isn't what he used to be but he's still a decent checkdown option, we feel our LBs can take care of him fairly well along with handling Williamsports RBs when necessary. We'll blitz on roughly 20% of the snaps to get after Dak and test their o-line.  Malcolm Jenkins will play SS and will rotate in and out of the box depending on the down and situation, in dime packages our no.4 CB comes on and Martinez stays on the field.

Front Seven/Run Defense: We should be able to handle Williamsports RBs fairly well given Carson is solid but can't catch a cold, the backfield and has some talent so we'll put effort into stopping them and forcing Dak to beat us through the air, we feel our d-line comprised of [See starting lineup for who is in the d-line] and let our stud LBs make plays. Blake Martinez will be the defensive signal caller, Beasley will be used as situational pass rushers and we'll be used as blitzing LBs on occasion as well. We'll rotate our defenders as necessary and make adjustments for the down&distance&situation.

The Pass Rush:

Vic Beasly will be used as a blitzing LB on occasion and will rotate in with Mercilus+Ford on occasion as well to keep them fresh, Dak should be harassed in this one a lot.

TDLR; Play good defense, control the LOS, dominate the running lanes, force turnovers, get after the QB, don't blitz often, contain Dak and the running game, play smart football, mind the down&distance etc.

Team: Williamsport Soul Reavers

Base Offensive Scheme: Erhardt-Perkins system, west coast WR concepts, RPO and zone blocking run game concepts

Core strengths: Mobile QB that is excellent in play action, RPO. Multiple RBs that can run both power and zone. Multiple WRs that excel in short to intermediate routes.

Strategy Against Portland Horned Owls :

Offensive Gameplan

We are going to take a somewhat similar approach to last week. We will throw an occasional 4 WR set there, but probably no more than 3-4 times total the entire game.

For the most part we will use 3 WR sets, 2 TE sets, Singleback, I formation and occassionally, split back. We want to keep the defense on their heels having to be prepared for everything. The #1 most important job we have in this game is keeping Dak upright.

Portland has a good defense, but it isnt great. Their secondary is okay. We are going to move Calvin Ridley and Golden Tate around. Tate is capable of playing both outside and in the slot. Ridley we want to move from one side to the other on occasion. We want to see what mismatches we can find throughout this game. As has been typical with us we will initially attack the middle of the field but our offensive attack will be built off of the run with Chris Carson. We plan to attack the defensive line head on. We will use Carson as our Bell cow and use Tevin Coleman to attack the flats with screens and Edge runs. Derrick Henry will primarily be used to keep Carson fresh in this game.

We are going to use the rush to set up the play action and mix some RPOs in here thanks to Daks ability to run. In Split back formations itll be Carson or Henry and Coleman on the field giving us 2 running options and a receiving option out of the backfield. On single backs itll vary based on yard to gain. (TC on longs, Carson/Henry on short to mediums)

I formations are another way we intend to wear down the defense. Derek Watt is among the better FBs in the league with punishing blocking ability. We will let him take on Pierce / Joseph straight up the middle helping the Oline to block.

In 2 TE sets, Maxx will block and Goedert will be our receiving threat. On one of the 4 WR sets we will split Goedert out wide.

Our goal is clock control and maintaining the ability to tire out the defense while keeping our RBs fresh.

When we do use play action to throw, we will have at least one deep route on tap. We have John Brown, Ridley, Tate, and Cobb who are all capable of going deep so who gets the option to do so will vary.

DEFENSIVE GAMEPLAN

Base Defensive Scheme: 3-4 front 7, Cover 2 Zone secondary

Core strengths: DL and LB are able to play the run and generate pressure both naturally and through blitzing. Linebackers also excel in zone coverage.

Strategy against Portland Horned Owls:

We anticipate that Mahomes will start this game but for arguements sake, out gameplan will be the same regardless of who it is.

We are sticking with the 4-3 this week. Our end game for next season is a 3-4 Defense but we really liked how our defense performed last week with that line. Bud Dupree is a physical freak that has shown the ability to take on blockers this season and succeed, we like him at DE and John Simon is not a world beater but a consistent cog at DE we feel can 'keep blockers busy' for our LBs to get to the QB.

Portland severely lacks TE depth due to injury. As a result wherever the TE lines up, we are gonna send a blitzer, in order to encourage Portland to have to keep him back to block. If he does, eventually the TE is gonna get tired and become less effective, if he doesnt, it make increase our success getting to the QB.

We are going to run a similar Nickel defense like we did last week. While we will use our 4-3 base on early downs and/or obvious run situations, we will use Nickel on high chance passing situations. 3 War sets will find us in the nickel and dime defense because of how good Mahomes is.

Byron Jones will cover Mike Williams, Steven Nelson will cover Devante Adams (if he doesnt play Nelson will cover Jones, but we are assuming he will play), Donte Jackson will cover Jones, Cam Sutton will cover Drew Sample and Devin Bush will cover McCaffery. Carlton Davis will cover the #4 WR and in the event they actually dare go 5 WR we would put a Safety on the 5th Receiver.

In 3 WR sets we are going to let Karl Joseph play deep to protect against down field shots. Morgan Burnett will play a 'mid-level' depth to help cover passes going to the middle area of the field.

We want to keep the passes in front of us and limit the big plays. Obviously McCaffery is an explosive player. But we are confident in the ability of our LBs to contain him. We want our LBs gang tackling him when he runs the football.

So question @wwhickok if you are going nickel against their three wide how do you have four corners in the game? And still going to blitz someone against their TE while also having someone cover him? And still have Devin Bush cover McCaffrey and still have Joseph play deep and Burnett play middle level? Are you going to  move to 3 dlineman? And if so which lineman stay in and which LBer is coming off the field? Because you described a dime defense against their three wide set but said you were running a nickel against it. So it doesn’t add up.

Yes. When I play 'coverage' I will switch to a 3-4 Base. I wont play nickel all game of course.

Reader, Bennett, Simon would stay on the field. Dupree and Bush would stay on also

I thought I put it in there but, I've been running a mix between nickel and dime

Tunsil is also technically Inactive as well because he was in week 9 and is on a bye week 10.

That would explain why the texans didn't have an injury report this week... just chalked it up to nfl.com being stupid.

Did Beachum play?

Yep and he plays RT with Alejandro moving to LT like last week.
