Offense

Strategy

This week we open up the playbook and lean on the skills of Justin Herbert against a suspect pass defense

Passing

We open up with four wide. Renfrow and Cooper on the near side and Cobb and Waddle on the wide side.   Cooper goes in motion presnap and ends up between Waddle and Cobb.

Hungary loves its cover one defense and will also be paying a lot of attention to Cooper so we are going to have him run slants and posts right into the help coverage that will be keying on him anyhow.  If they show a cover two shell he'll have the option to break that slant back outside or have a comeback route off the post look

Now that we've taken away the safety help in a cover one, we will attack the not so good other corners of the Hungary defense.  Waddle and Cobb will run combo routes off of what Cooper is doing. Waddle is going to get more targets than normal this week both on drags and deep routes as well as some outs and corner routes. We want to get the ball in his hands and let him work. Cobb will get some looks when we need a couple yards just to keep the defense honest

However with the trips on one side we are going to pepper Renfrow with the most looks this game.  He is perhaps the best pure route runner in the NFL and should be a nightmare for whoever Hungary lines up against him with no help.  The passing game probably won't be super electric this way but it will be effective with a lot of successful move the chains passes that eats up clock and keeps their defense on the field.  Once we get them to play close to the line we'll hit some double moves to attack vertically.  Devurnay comes in for some more speed for Cobb on long distances and in five wide.    We'll also look to attack Mosley in man as he is a cover three corner who does not have often get tasked with man coverage

If the corner doesn't go with Cooper in motion then we know we have zones which we we can beat with floods seams and other zone buster plays.  We'll also incorporate screens to Waddle here against an out manned side

Harris and Swift are expected to become a big part of the passing game. Deion Jones is a very good player but we think we have the running back talent with receiving prowleess to motion these guys out wide and cause nightmares with our backs

Up front we have zero worries about the pass rush. We'll make sure to pay extra attention to Allen on the interior but trust our tackles to block the edges and give us a ton of time for our wr to work open

Running game

With a lighter box due to four wide we love our running game here.  We are going to continue to run towards the edges and even use some pitches to the trips side if zone.  We'll incorporate more inside runs this week too running delays and draws against a team that will start turning back their ears with the early passing attack.

Once we hit the fourth quarter we will institute more base formation against a front that's been out there all game with uzomah at fb and Howard at TE. Harris runs over tired dudes

Option

With the lightened box we are also going to run more read options than normal.  Herbert reading the edge and picking up 4-5 easy yards if he crashes down

TL/DR- control the line of scrimmage. Boring move the chain passing game that eats up clock and tires out their defense.

Defense

This week we are going to do things a little differently than normal.  We are going to take away the wide receivers and dare Hungary to run against our front 6.  With their new toy in Tyler Lockett, we think they are going to try to go pass heavy.

We are doubling Lockett and Metcalf on every play while putting Humphrey on Theilan to take him away completely.  We are going to force Hungary to use Hockenson and the RB.  The latter of  which they almost always completely ignore in their passing game anyhow.  Hockenson has been banged up the past couple of weeks and his producton has suffered. Regardless, Milano draws the assignment with LVE getting the RB.  In four wide, Carter comes in and switches with Dean who will play off coverage on Goodwin/4th WR who will likely just be a deep ball decoy

We also will be mixing in a bunch of zone blitzes.  With the safeties already shaded towards the two WR it is easier for us to zone blitz with a corner or lb without having to rotate too heavily on the edges.  We’ll mainly play a cover two zone d on LB blitzes and a cover 3 on the CB Blitzes

Up front we have inserted the meat wall to not allow any rushing.  On third downs we will rotate out the entire line for the pass rush line of Fowler, McDowll, Blacklock and Phillps.  This will keep the run stuffers fresh.  Expect a lot of stunts on the fowler Mcdowell side to get some pressure up the middle with Phillips/Houston running through the train wreck that has been Eric Fisher this year.  Hungary likes the hurry up but also rotates their backs a bunch which makes the ref sit on the ball and allows us to substitute

TL/DR: Eliminate Metcalf and Lockett .  Force everything inside.  Trust the talent

Hungary Hippos

Offense:

We want to lean more on the passing game this week. Rome has a good secondary but we think we can still have success against them by spreading the ball around and attacking all over the field. We’re going up tempo and  gas out the Rome defense.

We’re going to come out airing it out this week, keeping a fast tempo as we spread the ball around to our receivers. DK Metcalf, Adam Thelen, and Tyler Lockett will play the majority of the snaps  while Dairus Slayton will rotate in from time to time to  keep them all fresh. This receiving core can hit every route, and can stretch the field as well at any moment so it will keep Rome on it’s toes. We’re also going to be splitting TJ Hockenson and James Robinson out wide sporadically throughout the game to isolate a defender in the open field. We’re going to show lots of different looks on offense. We will have 3 WR, Jumbo TE,  4 WR at times, etc. By switching up the look we hope to confuse Rome’s defense by constantly throwing some

To help further our rope-a-dope moves on Rome’s defense we will also use motion and misdirection. There will be a lot of pre-snap movement to attempt to get Rome defenders out of position. We also want to run a lot of WR and RB screens to Robinson and Lockett that will give us even more plus matchups in the field.

Taking the backseat in the split is our running game. While we will have a healthy dose of the running game, it won’t be a half an half or large as we have shown in previous weeks. When Robinson is in we will pitch him to the outside using his superior speed. With Mixon we want to get him going between the tackles or on the inside. RBs will switch based on the series.

Lancaster Defensive Strategy:

Rome’s offensive weapons have been a little lackluster in recent weeks.Cooper averages 60 yards per week, Renfrow has been averaging 60 yards, Waddle 30 yards, Duvernay 30 yards. I think this goes to our advantage:

Coverage:

Hayward (only has allowed 5 receptions this year) - Cooper
Moseley - 2WR (Boundary)
Bouye - 3WR
Parker - 4WR

If they are going with their offense from last week, Perryman will come in for Bouye and will have CJ. If they’re starting 3 wide receivers, Deion Jones and Logan Wilson will play sides of the field with the RB/TE coverage. If the RB/TE stays in to block, they can blitz. If they come out in 4 WR sets, Jones will come off the field for Parker who will cover whichever of Waddle/Fuller is the 4th WR and Wilson will cover the RB/TE. In 3 WR sets, Smith will be playing a deep zone.  In those sets, Chuck Clark will be playing in a shallow zone in the middle of the field. In 4 WR the safeties will split the field.

This week we look to feature our new rusher Charles Harris who has racked up 4 sacks already in his young season. Ogbah will be the bookend and Griffen will be a heavily utilized rotator for both DE as a situational pass rusher. Rome is playing musical chairs again this week with their top two centers going down leaving Karras as the only center eligible on his roster. We expect to see some level of success rushing the passer this game with both factors.

The running game is more of an after thought for Hungary this week because of our personnel advantage. When Rome is in  a 2 TE/FB look, there is an 8 man box with Perryman entering the game. In 3 WR set there is a 7 man box. In 4 WR sets the LBer in Wilson is an elite run stopper and will have eyes on the back. Harris finally showed up last week, but we feel like our defense is in a good place to stime the run no matter the formation.

You can't run up tempo when you're constantly switching personnel.  Refs sit on the ball

RB is changing on series. That means an entire drive is just one RB. That is what you hooked that onto.

@PR did you forget what team you run or did you c+p lancasters defensive game plan?

Truth: I copied and pasted their defensive game plan from when they played Rome because I thought it was good. I then went in and edited parts of the game plan to fit personnel and other formations.

Uhhhhh, doubling two receivers is a brave defensive scheme against three really good receivers and a quarterback who, while he hasn't been doing a bunch of it, can still run with the ball.

Well compared to my opponent, I'm actually running more than one defense all game

I think committing 5 defenders to 3 players all game long could be an issue, but PR's top sub to come in and play WR in Slayton has been inactive since week 4 and Marquise Goodwin is a non factor in the league.

Wait a second... The determining factor was sparse used #4 WR?
