I know where they are. Only one is in NY.

Well then you'd understand why people don't look at the Bills as a "New York" team. When people are talking about the size and value of the "New York market", they are talking about New York City. Not Long Island. Not upstate New York. MetLife stadium is an arm's reach away from NYC. Yes, it happens to be in NJ. But the Giants/Jets are a New York City market team. The Bills, while technically in NY, are not a NYC market team.

Thing is when you play in a different state, you open yourself to ridicule when you name yourself after the state next door.

Why didnt they go north? Its not like the state is one giant city. Plenty of land from what it looks like outsode city limits in NY. Then youd never get ish talk again about it.

my assumption is its a tax thing

Where else should they play? White Plains? Nyack? Might as well double the time it takes to get to games for those in Brooklyn, SI, and LI. And forget about the cost and getting those homeowners to vote for a new stadium.

It’s way more than tax thing. It’s nice that all these other states and cities have cheap land where they can build stadium in within state borders but NYC is not in a similar situation. Secaucus is a middle ground - close enough to NYC and dirty cheap to build on. Doesn’t take away from the fact they are NYC teams.

Teams are named after the metro area they plan in. The Dallas Cowboys play in Arlington which is part of the DFW metro area. The Buffalo Bills play in Orchard Park which is a suburb of Buffalo.

The Jets and Giants play in north NJ which is a part of the NYC metro area. The NYC metro area expands further than just the 5 boroughs and includes parts of the Hudson valley, parts of northern NJ and parts of Connecticut. It’s rare that a metro area expands 3 states but there are other examples.

Regardless of geographic location, I've always thought of it like this:

New York City - Giants
New Jersey - Jets
Upstate NY - Bills

In terms of fanbase this is off.

North NJ: Giants

South NJ: Eagles

The boroughs are split with most Jets fans being in the Queens/Long Island area. The Jets used to play out in Shea Stadium which is in Queens. And the Giants having a heavy fanbase in Manhattan/Bronx.
