Danger
John Elway might not even be a top 10 QB in today's game honestly.

Well, if leading average teams to the SB doesn't count, then I suppose you are right. Unfortunately for you, it means a lot if you play QB in the NFL. H...mmm, he had an absolute gun for an arm, was the highest rated QB ever drafted into the NFL with a perfect 10, took his average team to numerous SB's and you you think he could not play today. He would have a far better shot than Montana would have, since Montana played for Bill Walsh using the WCO, which few teams employ today, because defenses finally learned how to defend it after Montana retired. And you’re going to argue that his team was playing at an average level during that time? EDIT: Also, “lead” is a strong, strong word... 22 playoff games, 4,964 yards, 54.5%, 27-21 TD-INT, and 79.5 passer rating. 5 SB games, 1,128 yards, 50%, 3-8 TD-INT, and 59.4 passer rating. Jetzger
Literally every argument I've ever heard in favor of Elway in QB comparisons is centered around his draft profile and this "dragging his team to the super bowl" fallacy.

Elway was probably the #3 QB of all time, based on leading teams to the SB and I have seen them all play since the 50's. I like Elway, but #3 all time is incredibly generous. Steve Young had a HOF career with a lot of the concepts based on what Walsh was doing with various coaches in his career after Walsh was gone. Same with Favre. Or Elway. There isn't a single idealized WCO. Just staples of it that everyone uses today in their own offenses. Or principles. Walsh's offense evolved over time. Just like a lot of other coaches when new assistants and players are brought along. Andy Reid's playbook today isn't the same he used in 2000. Even so with Walsh, he still had a lot of influences from various coaches that came before his time. Montana wasn't a gimmick quarterback either that only had success because of the offense he played in and the head coach he had. He was still a talented football player with a good arm, feet, and smart decision making. That's why he was successful and guys like Jeff Kemp and Matt Cavanaugh, his teammates weren't. Montana also played well in Kansas City when he wasn't hurt. Walsh was long gone by this point.
