What do you guys think of Noah Sewell?

I'm not sure what to think of him. For who I envision someone like him to be vs what the stats show to me don't line up.

At 6'2, 253 lb's I envision a guy that is strong against the run, solid tackler and may struggle in coverage.

He has a missed tackle rate of 16.7% and a Stop % of 10% (both are below average in this class). He has a 62.4 PFF score against the run but is generally graded as "average" by PFF at 71.4. He has 40 tackles and 16 assists and 8 missed tackles  (avg is 62/22 with missed average of 11). I haven't watched a ton of film on him so far so I want to see if the numbers match up with what I see/how I've seen him described on draft sites.

Trying to see if PFF grades translate/predict success. Daniel Jeremiah's top rookies for 2022 (defensively) are:

1) Sauce Gardner - Cincinnati (86.5 OVR; 79.8 RDEF; 78.1 PRSH; 86.1 COV)

2) Aidan Hutchinson - Michigan (93.9 OVR; 87.7 RDEF; 93.1 PRSH; 73.7 COV)

3) Tariq Woolen - UTSA (61.3 OVR; 44.2 RDEF; 49.5 PRSH; 66.4 COV)

4) Jalen Pitre - Baylor (84.5 OVR; 91.9 RDEF; 85.4 PRSH; 73.4 COV)

5) George Karlaftis - Purdue (87.2 OVR; 75.1 RDEF; 90.6 PRSH; 59.3 COV)

6) Kayvon Thibodeaux - Oregon (83.8 OVR; 78.6 RDEF; 91.6 PRSH; 46.0 COV)

7) Devin Lloyd - Utah (90.4 OVR; 82.1 RDEF; 89.9 PRSH; 82.0 COV)

8 ) Travon Walker - Georgia (72.8 OVR; 76.8 RDEF; 65.9 PRSH; 66.4 COV)

9) Kerby Joseph - Illinois (90.4 OVR; 76.4 RDEF; 77.2 PRSH; 90.6 COV)

10) James Houston - Jackson St (OVR - 95.0; 78.0 RDEF; 95.7 PRSH; 77.1 COV)

11) Malcolm Rodriguez - Oklahoma State (85.5 OVR; 84.2 RDEF; 77.4 PRSH; 81.3 COV)

Two outliers - Woolen and Walker with average scores. Everyone else scored 83+ Overall.

A couple things:

First, there are 4 Lions on the list which is insane that Holmes drafted 38% of the top 11 defensive players last year.

Interesting to see the college PFF grades relatively similar to production in the NFL after one year even if the grades aren't the same. James Houston is one that shows up very well in his NFL game.  Great pass rusher but meh against the run/doing anything else.

Walker may be too high on this list even based on numbers this year as is Lloyd.

Woolen might just be a perfect fit in the system he is in now and wasn't in college.  To be fair, the Seahawks D has always made CBs look good so that helps explain that outlier.

This doesn't necessarily mean anything but this would follow that thought above (although Woolen would disagree)

CB RANKINGS (BY PFF SCORE)

  1. Devon Witherspoon, Illinois - 92.0 OVR (78.6 RDEF; 92.5 COV)
  2. Mekhi Blackmon, USC - 90.6 OVR (79.4 RDEF; 91.1 COV)
  3. Emmanuel Forbes, Miss. State - 87.8 OVR (81.0 RDEF; 89.6 COV)
  4. Clark Phillips, Utah - 85.2 OVR (70.6 RDEF; 86.3 COV)
  5. Anthony Johnson, Virginia - 82.5 OVR (72.9 RDEF; 84.4 COV)
  6. Riley Moss, Iowa - 81.3 OVR (77.0 RDEF; 81.0 COV)
  7. Christian Gonzalez, Oregon - 81.2 OVR (76.9 RDEF; 81.4 COV)

SAFETY RANKINGS (BY PFF SCORE)

  1. Kam Pedescleaux, Louisiana - 89.7 OVR (82.6 RDEF; 89.3 COV)
  2. Kaveon Merriweather, Iowa - 88.1 OVR (75.1 RDEF; 89.3 COV)
  3. Brian Branch, Alabama - 85.0 OVR (85.5 RDEF; 83.4 COV)
  4. Ronnie Hickman, Ohio State - 84.8 OVR (75.3 RDEF; 88.9 COV)
  5. Gervarrius Owens, Houston - 82.5 OVR (69.0 RDEF; 87.6 COV)
  6. Antonio Johnson, Texas A&M - 81.6 OVR (83.7 RDEF; 79.7 COV)

It's a pretty wild thing to consider as long suffering Lions fans.

We had a 3rd rounder plus two 6th rounders go with our #2 overall in this list.

Outside of Woolen (5th rounder) and Pitre (2nd rounder), every non-Lion in this list is a 1st rounder. It's absolutely wild.

I have to admit I haven't watched a ton of Jags games this year but wasn't Lloyd benched at one point this year? Walker also doesn't jump out but his teammate, Josh (Not the QB) Allen, does.

He's coming from a small school and it's possible that the coaching just wasn't the right fit for what he needed as a player.

Interestingly enough, cbs sports has us drafting Devon Witherspoon number 6 overall. It's intriguing that he has a better coverage grade than Sauce at Cincy.

"Witherspoon was the best press-man cornerback in the country last season, and quite frankly, it wasn’t even close. On 113 snaps in press coverage this past fall, he allowed a grand total of one yard."

My only issue with him right now is his size. I could also see him dropping a little bit because teams are likely to covet the bigger guys like Sauce and Woolen after their years. He'd probably still go top 15, maybe as the 3rd CB off the board.

The Lions place a lot of value in run blocking, so I'm interested to see who are the guys that are mid-to-late rounders who offer up some size (as ARSB and Jamo are smaller guys), strong as run blockers but are also reliable pass catchers.

On the surface, so far I am intrigued by:

- AT Perry, Wake Forest

- Jake Bobo, UCLA

- Rashee Rice, SMU

- Xavier Hutchinson, Iowa State

- Jonathan Ringo, Ole Miss

- Michael Jefferson, Louisiana
