Training Camp and Preseason

We move into the final stage of the preseason. To a large degree, the roster is set. Now it's time to start sorting who will play where and how much. This article has 7 players to watch during OTAs--Justyn Ross, Jawaan Taylor, Rashee Rice, Deneric Prince, Bryan Cook, Tershawn Wharton, Noah Gray. It's not a bad group to start with.

OTAs are noncontact, so it's a time for WR and DB to play. Prince is important because Isiah Pacheco is still recovering from offseason surgery. Noah Gray has a chance to emerge as a legitimate TE2. Bryan Cook has a shot at starting S but has to beat FA signee Mike Edwards.

Probably the person most casual observers want to see is Justyn Ross. If he is medically good-to-go, it's like a free high draft pick. More realistically, there is the opportunity for Rashee Rice to stake a claim to some of JuJu's workload.

Update: With preseason game #1 looming, we enter the last phase of this thread.

In our D, this is a myth.  I know what you’re saying, but in reality I think they’re all on the field a lot.

We do run a lot of big nickel.

The next question is where Chamarri Conner fits in, if at all. I suspect he will have an immediate impact in the ST, but can he play the field?

As if he needed it, Justyn Ross gets more hype from Andy Reid. John Ross also got a plug. However, it's worth noting that HC Reid was asked about John Ross but chose to answer about both. Competition in the WR room is going to be intense.

I think Edwards is the starter but Cook is going to be playing a lot

That's entirely possible.

Edwards is a sticky-fingered opportunist. I suspect he plays more when we have the lead. Cook is a head hunter who should work better against the running game. Obviously, all three will play a fair amount.

The other question is whether Chamarri Conner plays at all. ST will love him but I m not so sure of the regular defense.

OTAs are over. here are a few observations.
https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/lists/kansas-city-chiefs-otas-takeaways-offensive-tackles-bryan-cook-nazeeh-johnson-deneric-prince/?itm_source=parsely-api

  • One observation is obvious, that the OT battle will wait until they play in pads.
  • One is that having Pacheco and McKinnon away has opened the field. The article mentions UDFA Deneric Prince but you should not overlook Clyde Edwards-Hellaire and his upcoming contract year.
  • The third is the most insightful. It refers to 2nd-year DB Bryan Cook and Nazeeh Johnson. Both showed well in non-contact drills and have significant opportunities for additional responsibility. NJ may easily become a ST fixture.

Minicamp starts today. This is mandatory, so everyone should be in attendance. Here is a bit on six newcomers--FA and draftees--who could have significant roles.

The big news of day #1 is that Chris Jones is not attending. Many expect his contract to be reworked between now and the opening of training camp.

Minicamp is non-contact but it is still possible to impress, particularly when someone is absent. Here are five who turned heads last week--WR Skyy Moore and Richie James, RB Denerick Prince, DB Nic Jones, DL Charles Omenihu.

  • 4 weeks later...

Training camp is upon us. Players start reporting Monday and there are closed practices starting on Wednesday, 19 July. Here are some questions that will be (hopefully) answered in the next three weeks.

  • RB rotation - isiah Pacheco play hurt in the AFC Championships game and the Super Bowl. He had off-season surgery and was kept out of OTAs and minicamp. Clyde Edwards-Helaire enters camp at the top of the depth chart, followed by Pacheco, Jerick McKinnon, and UDFA Deneric Prince.
  • The WR room - Marquez Valdes-Scantling is the only sure thing. Kadarius Toney is next assuming he's healthy. Skyy Moore and 2nd round pick Radhee Rice are likely locks for the 53 but after that things get messy. Justin Watson is the WR equivalent of a blocking TE and had a ton of snaps last season. Richie James is a reliable veteran and can play ST. Justyn Ross appears fully recovered and would be claimed if waived. It's doubtful that the Chiefs keep all seven plus there are several potential ST players further down the depth chart.
  • OT - Both sides lost starters. Lucas Niang is the much-injured veteran. Jawaan Taylor and Donovan Smith are the FA signees. Wanya Morris is the draft pick. Who plays where and what order needs to be sorted.
  • Kick and Punt Return - Isiah Pacheco returned KO last season but he has been injured. Skyy Moore has the PR job last year but muffed three kicks. There is a smalll army of potential ST-only players. It's not as much turnover as last year, but there is still a lot.
  • The LB rotation - With the addition of Drue Tranquill, a gifted coverage LB, and the presumed development of Leo Chenal this group has gotten crowded. Who plays where and how much will be something to watch.

CEH on top? This feels like a gigantic stretch unless others aren’t healthy enough to compete.
