Villian Draft

Would like to revisit this thread half way through the season.

Some things that have stood out to me so far this season.

2021-

This was a building block draft. We all know Penei is one of the top OT in the league and ARSB is arguably the best slot receiver in the league, but other guys have stepped up as well.

Alim McNeill is a very good DT and his development has been noticeable. Derrick Barnes took awhile to develop but he’s a starting LB and playing well.

Would like to see more out of Levi & Iffy, but that’s a damn good haul of guys to build your team around. Jermar Jefferson is the only non contributor.

Two stars, two starters, two question marks.

2022-

This draft had an absolute stud at the top with Hutchinson, but Kerby Joseph is a damn good starting safety, James Houston was a breakout pass rush specialist that I cannot wait to get back, we are getting production out of Paschal, Mitchell, Rodrigo and even Chase Lucas on special teams.

Jamo's development will either make this a very good draft or an exceptional one.

2-3 stars, 1-2 standout players, 4 contributors.

2023-

What a hot take draft. But our top 4 draft picks are all playing 50+% of snaps and contributing to our playoff run. Gibbs is projected to end the season with over 1200 scrimmage yards and 8 TDs. Jack Campbell is learning a lot and getting more snaps each week due to his play. LaPorta is having one of the best rookie TE seasons of all time, projected to finish with nearly 900 yards and 8 TDs. Branch has played well and solidified himself as the starting NB despite all the injuries next to him in the secondary.

Colby Sorsdal played due to injuries on the OL and played well. Brodric Martin got playing the last game and did well. Antoine Green has not been able to get snaps despite the need at WR. Hooker is still on the sidelines.

I don’t think many would argue that Gibbs, LaPorta and Branch are solid starters. Campbell is a good contributor. Sorsdal & Martin are limited depth guys right now. Green has struggled despite the opportunity. Hooker is a question mark at this point.

I think the Lions getting 4 starters every draft is the key to keeping this roster talented, cost efficient and competitive. This rebuild is ahead of schedule and these drafts and development of these players are directly responsible for that surge.

Brad Holmes said he would build the Lions through the draft and for the most part that is exactly what he has done.  He has added a ton of talent through the draft and supplemented that with reasonable free agent signings.  One thing that stands out about the last two drafts is that he has selected developmental players with high ceilings in the back end of the draft that should help the Lions maintain a competitive roster.
