So... about that Deebo contract... I don't know if OverTheCap has some insider info or they messed up, but they are showing a restructure on next year as well. Converting 15.494M of salary to bonus reduces his cap hit from 24.2M to 16M in 2025.

Looks like they did restructure 2025 as well according to this article

https://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/183564-details-emerge-samuels-restructured-contract/

I sent a tweet to Jason to see if that's accurate though because Spotrac doesn't reflect a restructure on 2025

I don't think this changes anything with a possible deebo move, but maybe makes it more likely to be a 6/1 cut as opposed to a pre 6/1 trade?

Deebo isnt getting cut. You dont cut a player like Deebo. He is sticking around in 2025. I know they were shopping him, but I won't believe Kyle moves on from Deebo until it actually happens. Now that he has lost weight and has had the best camp of his career, if that continues, he is going to stay.

They'd be dumb to extend him and he shouldn't be playing on a lame duck contract

But if Deebo wants to play on a lame duck contract, I'm all for it, I should say.

But man, that would stun me.

If they give him an extension, that's probably a 3 year deal again? Covering ages 30, 31 and 32 and you're probably talking guaranteed money for ages 29--31?

I just don't know how that is a good idea. I'd be more okay with that if it were Aiyuk because his ability isn't so dependent on straight up physical traits,  but can't say I'm all that enthused by how I'd expect a player like Deebo to age, you know?

If you actually get a response from Jason, you should ask him about Deebo's Signing Bonus on that page. The bottom of the page attributes PFT for the 2022 contract details. I added the proration information in italics.

Quote

1. Signing bonus: $24.035 million. (prorated at 4.807 million from 2022-26)

2. 2022 base salary: $965,000, fully guaranteed at signing.

3. 2023 option bonus: $9.215 million, fully guaranteed at signing. (prorated at 1.843 million from 2023-27)

4. 2023 offseason workout bonus: $200,000, fully guaranteed three days after signing.

5. 2023 base salary: $1.080 million, fully guaranteed at signing.

6. 2023 per-game roster bonuses: $750,000, fully guaranteed three days after signing.

7. 2024 offseason workout bonus: $200,000, fully guaranteed three days after signing.

8. 2024 base salary: $20.972 million, guaranteed for injury at signing. Of that amount, $4.555 million is fully guaranteed at signing; the balance becomes fully guaranteed on April 1, 2023.

9. 2024 per-game roster bonuses: $750,000, guaranteed for injury at signing, fully guaranteed as of April 1, 2023.

10. 2025 offseason workout bonus: $200,000.

11. 2025 base salary: $16.601 million.

12. 2025 per-game roster bonuses: $750,000.

Including the 904k in remaining signing bonus from his rookie contract in 2022, the 2024-25 restructure, and the 150k in LTBE bonuses in 2025, the numbers on the table should look like

t7w6wLm.png

I haven't heard of any of his 2025 compensation being made guaranteed, so the 2nd table would be the team options before his 2025 option was paid out.

48M fully guaranteed at signing. Nothing else converts into fully guaranteed money in the contract, so he's practically guaranteed 49.6M of the 82.66M. Trent gets 6.85M more in 2024 (before taxes), lost 1.4M in 2025, and has 5.3M in mandatory fines. After tax, he loses some money for 2 years fully guaranteed.

Capwise,

  • 2024
    • Converts 18.84M in previous 2024 salary to a signing bonus, adding 1 void year (5 year proration).
    • 27.65M Cash Flow, up from 20.9M.
      • 1.21M Salary + 25.69M signing bonus + 750k in per game bonuses.
      • Gets a 6.85M raise through the signing bonus, with 1.4M coming from 2025 salary and the remaining 5.45M being new money.
      • Salary and Signing Bonus are fully guaranteed.
    • 21.824M Cap Hit
      • The cap hit in 2024 goes from 31.569M to 21.924M, saving 9.833M.
      • The 2024 cap hit includes 1 proration of 2025 option bonus money.
  • 2025
    • Converts 19.845M in previous 2025 salary into a roster bonus (5 year proration starting in 2024).
      • 1.4M in previous salary was moved into 2025 as part of that raise.
      • Since accounting of the roster bonus begins in 2024, no void years are added.
    • 21.95M Cash Flow, down from 23.35M.
      • 1.255M Salary + 19.845M roster bonus + 100k workout bonus + 750k in per game roster bonuses.
      • For cap purposes, the roster bonus is being treated as signing bonus and begins its prorated accounting in 2024.
      • Salary and Roster Bonus are fully guaranteed.
    • 21.969M Cap Hit
      • The cap hit in 2025 goes from 34.107M to 21.969M, saving 12.138M.
  • 2026
    • Converts 10M in previous salary to an option bonus, adding 1 void year (4 year proration).
    • 33.06M Cash Flow, unchanged from previous contract.
      • 22.21M Salary + 10M option bonus + 100k work out bonus + 750k in per game roster bonuses.
    • 39.404M Cap Hit
      • The cap hit goes from 37.797M to 39.404M, costing the 49ers 1.607M.
  • 2027
    • Void year created by the 2023 restructure signing bonus.
    • The cap hits goes from 3.647M to 15.254M.
    • The dead money if the contract voids goes from 3.647M to 29.361M.
  • 2028
    • Void year created by the 2024 extension signing bonus.
    • Has a cap hit of 11.607M.
  • 2029
    • Void year created by the 2026 option bonus of this contract.
    • Has a cap hit of 2.5M.

Treating the 2025 bonus money as signing bonus should get it covered by the Barry Sanders rule, which allows the team to recover signing bonus if the player retires.

Another one where spotrac isn't reflecting a restructure for next year

Schefter said today on the Mcaffee show that the niners sent the infamous "5 day letter" to BA in mid August saying that if he did not practice within 5 days, they would put him on "a list" that would have made him ineligible to play for the entire season.

I had no idea this existed and I wonder if BA ran out the clock on that 5 days. It makes sense why they were so pissed if that is the case.
