Draft Prospects 2019

Recommended Posts

I know this might be getting a little ahead of ourselves, but I'm ready to talk about draft prospects.

To start off some defensive prospects from RD 1 that I like:

Tre Lamar, LB, Clemson. 6'4" 255. Jr

He kinda reminds me a bit of Farrior.  He is solid in coverage, but being this is against GT you don't get to see it much from him.  Manages to just keep himself clean.  Sometimes can be a little too finesse.  Isn't much of a rusher, so he's a guy to scheme blitz with.

NFL Comp: Donte Hightower

Montez Sweat, DE/OLB, Mississippi State.  6'6" 241.

Long and lean.  Great burst off the line.  Knows how to use his hands.  His breakdown to keep fast QB's in front of him is amazing.  Lateral quickness of a safety, with the power of a DL player.  Fast as hell.  Good inside swim move, doesn't rely on a dip, but it's there.  Good bull rush.  Spin move is good, but doesn't use it enough.  Lines up at LDE and RDE.  Bold statement: Rather have him than Nick Bosa.

NFL Comp: Myles Garrett

Clelin Ferrell, DE, Clemson.  6'4" 265.

Thick midsection.  POWERFUL hands.  Motor for days.  I haven't seen a college player with hands this good since JJ Watt.  I think he's a guy that can go from DT to DE to RushBacker and be effective at all 3 spots.  Good lateral quickness but not elite.  Long arms.  Tunnel vision for pass rush, tends to miss run plays.  Once a OT's hands are on him he's all about the effort sack.

NFL Comp: Michael Bennett

Koron Crump.  Dudes undersized, but a beast.  Maybe an OLB to ILB convert to replace Shazier.

Via SI.com:

Quote

19. Pittsburgh: Devin Bush, LB, Michigan
Bush was under-recruited coming out of high school because of his height (5' 11"), but he has developed into the new prototype for NFL linebackers—not necessarily big, but fast and aggressive.

22. Green Bay: Devin White, LB, LSU
Jake Ryan’s torn ACL exposed Green Bay’s thin linebacker corps this season. White has 66 tackles and seven of those for loss this season. He has range and versatility, and would be a great fit in Mike Pettine’s system.

If that happens who wants to break into Colbert's office to leave a steamer on his desk?  Although it would fit taking a 3rd round prospect in the 1st round.

I would agree.

Jachai Polite DE/OLB Florida 6'2" 245lbs
This kid is a special athlete. He's an explosive athlete who uses his speed to make OT's lives miserable. Polite also owns a killer spin move and does a good job with his hands as well. While he has primarily been a pass rush specialist for Florida, he has immense upside and could be an elite next level rusher.

Oshane Ximines DE/OLB Old Dominion 6'2" 250lbs
Who? From where? While he's not the athlete that Polite is, what sets him apart is his polish as a defender. He not only can rush the passer but does a very good job in the run game. He has excellent hands and can get off blocks. He might not possess the upside of an elite pass rusher but his advanced game could allow him to see the field early.

D'Andre Walker OLB Georgia 6'3" 245lbs
Walker was a guy who caught my eye a year ago watching some Roquan Smith tape. Walker is long, athletic, and bends well for a guy his size. I also liked how his speed turned into power as he rushed the passer. I also thought he did a good job of setting the edge in run defense the few times I've watched him.

Sutton Smith LB Northern Illinois 6'1" 235lbs
Tthis guy is an absolute missile on the field. Quicker than every tackle he goes up against in the MAC, he arrives with bad intentions for the QB. I'm not sure he can stay at OLB for the Steelers but I'd also be interested in trying him as an ILB. I remember when Indiana was interested in this guy, the coaches weren't sure where he would play. Boy do I wish we would have gambled on him!

One I am watching.. Chase Winovich, DE, Michigan 6'2" 258 - High motor. decent technique.

He is the player we need , just all out every second , never lets up. Why can't he be OLB for us?   He stands out thats for sure, and he has work ethic so they say (unlike jarvis) , but the speed off the snap and moves are already there.  Is he going into the draft spring 2019?

LB/CB/DL depth for defense

Interior OL/RB depth for offense

Truth be told it wouldn’t surprise me if Steelers went OL in RD1.come April next year...this OL is nearing the end...they drafted Chuks who probably replaces Gilbert this upcoming year or next...Foster is next.

Sorry not up to date on players...just think this where Steelers will be looking next draft minus the FA they bring in to fil a need.

They only need a OG this year ( if we figure Foster is gone).  I like the rest of the depth and in Munchak I trust.

Unless Burns turns it around I could see CB in rd 1.  Or ILB.

I mean it’s not likely but it also wouldn’t shock me...plus I think Finney is a RFA this upcoming year and they need to decide on whether to give Pouncey C3$(probably will I admit)...just thinking out loud.

They have to address 1 of ILB/Edge/CB in FA next offseason...preferably 2 if possible...draft wise ILB probably makes most immediate impact in 2019.

I think they see Finney as Fosters replacement.  I do think we need to start developing Pouncey and Gilbert replacements, but I still think our needs at CB, ILB, and OLB are far bigger.

I think Gilbert's replacement is on the roster. Banner, Feiler, or Hawkins. Pouncey's might need to be drafted.

I dont view Hawkins as a starter on our oline and frankly we haven't seen enough of Feiler or Banner to say they are either.

I think Munchak might disagree with you on all of that. Also, there were reports of Hawkins looking fantastic before he got hurt. I think he's part of our future.

Hawkins looks to have potential and could thrive under Munchak but it is hard to ignore the injuries.

Meh, two completely separate injuries. I would say he's been unlucky more than injury prone. if it happens again next year, I'll change my tune.

I hear ya but less then 3 years and 2 IRs not to mention some significant injuries in college. He HAS to stay healthy next year to be considered for the future.
