Mike Jones: Terrell McClain a possible cut

From the Mike Jones Mail Bag:

You haven’t heard much about them because neither has really moved the needle. McGee has been the better of the two. As of late, he has looked more impactful. Neither have been staples on the starting units. McGee has been a rotational player. McClain has made a cameo here and there. Both started for the first time Saturday night, but it was nothing to write home about. McGee has made a little noise against the run, and has generated some pressure in nickel packages. But I like Matt Ioannidis and Jonathan Allen better in the base package, and Allen and Anthony Lanier better in the nickel. From what I can gather, people are still encouraged by the recent strides they are seeing from McGee. But they want/need to see a lot more from McClain.

[An updated projection of the Redskins’ 53-man roster

I don’t think there’s any realistic chance McClain gets cut this year (though I agree with your take in this morning’s 53-man projection that he hasn’t impressed at all). According to Over the Cap, McClain got a $5 million bonus, and his $2.25 million salary this year is fully guaranteed, so he gets paid exactly the same amount (and has the same cap hit) whether he’s on the team or not this year. He would have to be shockingly bad for it to make sense to cut him.

 — Jon Romberg

Yeah, I didn’t say it definitely would happen. I’ve just been told by multiple people in the organization that he really needs to make up some ground. It’d really be a shame for him to eat up that cap space ($7.25 million dead cap hit, as you said) and not be on the team. But if he’s not going to be able to get on the field, what good does that do the team? The Redskins have nine guys who play the same 3-4 end/4-3 tackle position as McClain. Five of them (Jonathan Allen, Matt Ioannidis, Ziggy Hood, McGee and Anthony Lanier) have all looked better. Joey Mbu and A.J. Francis have looked about the same. That’s not good.

Maybe it's just me, but I think Chris Russell - which is where I originally saw the Mike Jones story - is click baiting a bit judging by what's Mike Jones actually wrote in his mail bag. Russell tweeted the story and said McClain is a possible cut, and I guess Mike Jones kind of says that, but hes definitely not saying it's probable that McClain gets cut, only that the coaches want to see more out of him.

I know you're just joking around, but the front office needs to be cold hearted and evaluate each player on this team as to whether they will contribute going forward. Only in the case of two players having relatively equal skill sets should the cap calculation come in.

Honestly if McClain isn't going to work out in a 3-4, I'd rather take the cap hit this year than have it carry over into next year.

So according to overthecap, if we were to cut McClain now, he'd actually save us $234,375 against the cap this year, but would still count $3.5 mil against the cap (he's counting $3,734,375 against the cap now for 2017).

I think a lot of it has to do with how Phil Taylor has looked and how all of the young guys have looked.

MClain has been playing a 3-technique in our defense (he played 3tech and 1tech @ Dallas last year ). He's not playing a 5-technique or two gapping. The 5-tech is McGee and he's the only player we have in the 3 down linemen who is two gaping.

The full hit would be $10.5M (made up of guaranteed 2017 salary ($2.25M), 2018 salary ($3.25M), and signing bonus ($5.0M)). We don't have the room for that. OTC has us having ~$6.5M in cap space. Cutting McClain without eating it all means saving $0.234M (active game roster bonuses) and $7.0M in dead cap next year.

We signed a 4-3 DT to play in our 3-4 Defense.

What quotes?

Like what Woz did to my last post how he broke up each point I had into quotes. Remember in the old forum we had a "quote" button, well we don't here but I know there is still a way to it, I just haven't figured it out yet but Woz has.

We signed a 1 & 3 technique DL to play 1 & 3 technique in our system. This is what Baker played and what Hood has played for us also.

You can research it if you want, I already have for 3 years now and explained it to the forum.

Typical NT play 1 tech.  Typical 5-tech plays 3-4 DE.  Typical 3 tech plays pass rushing 4-3 DT.

We signed a 4-3 DT to play in our 3-4 Defense.

Well it hasn't been determined that he's gotten beat out yet. Maybe McClain is better at run defending and the younger guys are showing better as pass rushers. I know that's what we've seen Ioannidis, Lanier and Mbu all do better so far but some of that has been against back ups. I think McClain has played a total of 20 snaps this preseason, maybe less. Chris Russell said he looked good pushing the pocket as a pass rusher and looked good agains the run, that's what we should be looking for on 1st & 2nd down.

When we go nickle that's when we can take out a DL or 2 and use the pass rushers like Allen (who I think is a 3 NFL player)Lanier and Ioannidis.
