Halfway Home

After eight games we are 5-3. It's probably not the three games most of us would have guessed, but not out of line given the schedule and all the off season changes.

On offense, Mecole Hardman has been a great second round pick. We know, because we have had to use him so much. He and Hill were torturing the Packers on Sunday night. Indeed, the entire draft class has contributed. More on this when we get to the defense. The OL is giving the bench a workout, but we have no smoking craters. Fisher's injury has forced Cam Irving to play LT, where his pass pro has been OK, but his run blocking has been substandard. However Martinas Rankin has stepped in and done a credible job. With outstanding hands and good feet, he seems more like an OT, but he is holding the fort while Andrew Wylie recovers. Perhaps the two can swap positions in the off season. Matt Moore has more than justified the team's faith. One wonders how safe Chad Henne's job is for the rest of the season. Still looking for a back-up to Travis Kelce. Still, when Mahomes is under center and healthy, the offense is everything we expected.

On defense, the injury list is frightening, but the rookies have done extremely well and some disappointments have stepped up. Juan Thornhill is going to be a great safety and Rashad Fenton is going to be a solid CB. That's a nice draft, even discounting that Thornhill was taken outside the top 50 and Fenton outside the top 200. Add a solid rotational DT in Khalen Saunders and this was a really good draft. The disappointment that stepped up is Tanoh Kpassagnon, who was a beast against the Packers. He and Emmanuel Ogbah have been outstanding as the second line of attack, behind Frank Clark and Alex Okafor. Despite some major injuries, the DL is holding its own.

So is the secondary, though it is getting thin back there. Fuller is out for a while and Bashaud Breeland looks to be following. However, Charvarious Ward has played very well and Rashad Fenton has been outstanding for a rookie, much less a 6th round pick. Mo Claiborne is getting acclimated, so there is still three solid players. Thornhill and Mathieu have picked up a lot of slack. Depth is thin here too.

LB shows signs of life. Hitchens has finally shown some diagnostics at MLB and Ragland has had a impact hits in a couple straight games. Wilson was always the most solid, so the unit is . Herein is the point. We all expected there to be transition pains. It seems they have been most noticeable in the LB corps. When this group is playing well, the whole defense is pretty good. When not, the whole defense struggles. Here is to believing they are starting to really put the pieces together and this will be a much better defense in the second half, injuries permitting.

Here we sit. In November there is another home game against the Vikings, then a road game against the Titans, Mexico City against the Chargers and the Bye. If we can win two of the three, we should be well positioned to finish strong in December. Injuries have been a big factor so far, but we are starting to get some of them back and Mahomes looks to be far ahead of schedule. Sitting a game and a half ahead of the division, the playoffs are very likely. all we have to do is get well and get everyone playing at full speed.

The defense has seemed to have turned a corner. Put me in as someone who is surprised. They looked so lost and just unable to make a tackle in the first 5-6 games. Against the Packers, if Aaron Rodgers didn't make 2 nearly impossible throws, they win that game.

Sometimes superstars, just make superstar plays. The teams Mahomes did that to, understand. Now we do.

The first one was a great throw, but the second one was pure slop.  He just threw up a prayer and was lucky enough to have a receiver in the area.  You guys should have won that game.  If Mahomes were playing, it would have been an easy win for the Chiefs.

We started the Second Half right with a hard fought, come-from-behind win. Well done.

There seems to be a good chance PM II plays this week against the Titans. For once, we are not up against a team with an outstanding offense, a top 10 QB, or both. It's a road game, but against a team we should beat.
