FINAL CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS

CB Tony Bruce (66) - 3 year deal, $650k salary, $150k SB, $639k Y1 cap hit - $2.4 mil Total Contract

- He's only 23 years old and a solid athlete.  He's worth a flier as a bottom of the roster guy.

FS Xavier Acosta (75) - 3 year deal, $650k salary, $100k SB, $589 Y1 cap hit - $2.25 mil Total Contract

- He's a 75 OVR and only 24, but he isn't that great.  He's pretty slow.  Still, he's cheap.

The biggest gain this year was QB Cam Creese, but that is a bit misleading because LT Linsley and CB Banks both leveled more, I just spread out what they leveled in more.  I'm trying to make them well rounded players, and deflate their OVRs some before their rookie contract expire.

LOLB Murray's OVR plummeted.

FREE AGENCY

Like always I'll just be looking for reasonably priced stop gap solutions and role players as I continue to build through the draft.

WR Wade McGhee (79) - 3 year deal, $4.5 mil salary, $2.5 mil SB, $5.85 Y1 cap hit - $20.9 mil Total Contract ACCEPTED

- My WR core is pretty terrible.  He's only 25, normal dev though.  Physical WR.

TE Preston Lynn (74) - 3 year deal, $2.2 mil salary, $1.2 mil SB, $2.82 Y1 cap hit - $10.1 mil Total Contract ACCEPTED

- Backup TE.  He's 25, normal dev.  Possession TE.

DT Ace Walton (77) - 4 year deal, $4.0 mil salary, $2.0 mil SB, $4.55 Y1 cap hit - $23.8 mil Total Contract ACCEPTED

- He was a Bengal.  He's 6'5" 304 lbs, I'll probably play him at DE in my 3-4 scheme.  He's only 26, normal dev.

DT Da'Ron Payne (76) - 1 year deal, $3.3 mil salary, $1.55 mil SB, $4.8 Y1 cap hit - $4. 8 mil Total Contract ACCEPTED

- He's 33 year, stop gap solution along the line.

Bengals players who left in FA.

HB A Rathman (94) - bummer

ROLB J Baptiste (88)

CB H Pitts (84)

OC C Yarborough (81)

WR J Kuper (79)

This is a deep draft class.  At the top is QB Forbes, who has a cannon of an arm.  I don't think QB is my biggest need but if he falls I think I would consider him.

Pass rusher is probably my biggest need but there is slim pickings here in the first.  RE Farley is my guess for the best player in this class, he's an edge rusher that I would convert to OLB.  I expect him to be a top 3 pick and out of my reach.  RE Clemens is a Power Rusher who would also convert to OLB for me, he's not an elite athlete but I still think could be a solid player.  He's not a guy I'd trade up for but if he drops he'd be a good pick.  RE Barnard and LE Howard are both 3-4 DEs who look to be more run stuffers than pass rushers.  Both would fill a need though.  ROLB Drayton would move to MLB in my scheme but looks like a solid player, although he ran a slow 40.

CB Kennedy looks like a stud, I expect him to go top 3.  Either Kennedy or Farley will be the best player in this class.  SS Mills is another solid secondary player but didn't run the best 40.

WR Charleston looks amazing as well, he's listed as a Physical WR but is also athletic.  I think he compares well to AJ Green.  He would fill a major hole for me.  If he falls I'll consider trading up for him.  WR Higgins is a small athletic slot WR type, but with his speed could be an elite deep threat.  WR Dunn did not run a good 40, but was elite in all of hte other drills.  I expect because of his 40 he'd be a slot WR as well.

There are several OLineman, but none of them really stand out except RG Brackens, but he's 23 years old.  Not an ideal first round pick.

Finally, there are two really solid RBs, McDonald and Silver.  Both are good athletes, both have great size.  Either one would be a solid pick but I'd prefer if one fell to the 2nd.

You guys know how I roll, I'm not going to trade into the top 5, its too expensive.  Lets see how the first 5 picks go.

RE Trent Barnard (75) goes #1 overall to the Seahawks.  I wasn't blown away by his combine but maybe he's a high dev trait.  The Patriots take CB Ben Kennedy (78) 2nd, which sucks.  Crap, WR Eric Charleston (74) goes #3 to the Colts.  I really wanted him.  And RE Blake Farley (76) goes #4 to the Panther, he was the other super elite guy.  And WR Lloyd Higgins (74) goes #5 to the Bulls.

Kennedy, Charleston & Farley were my trade up targets so I don't see the point in moving up now.  Time to sim to 16.

Ok I'm on the clock at 16. A lot of the guys on my draft board are already gone.  RT Burley, RG Brackens, SS Mills, and RB Silver remain.

RT Bruley has great size, but his top 3 skills don't blow me away and he didn't have the best combine.  He's also 22.

RG Brackens had a great combine, but he's already 23 and he's a Guard.

SS Mills only ran a 4.53 in the 40, which isn't a killer at Safety but its not ideal.  The rest of his combine was great. His top 3 skills aren't great though.  He's also 22.

Then there's HB Silver.  His top 3 skills look great.  He ran a 4.40 at 238 lbs and did 25 bench reps.  He's listed as an Early 1st talent and is 21.  The only problem is he's a HB.

I think Silver is the BPA here.

With the 16th Pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals Select:

HB Jordan Silver, Tulane

Power Back (76), Elusive back (72), Receiving Back (65)

pKBSsaG.jpg

- Hidden dev!  Thank god.  He has good athleticism for a power back.  Doesn't offer much in the passing game but is a legit lead back.  I think this was a good pick.  He'll be the centerpiece of my offense for years.

I'm on the clock again at 20.

Brackens and Burley went, which is fine with me cause Mills was always going to be my pick.

With the 20th Pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals Select:

SS Jamichael Mills, LSU

Hybrid (74), Zone (73), Run Support (72)

f9xGR47.jpg

- Hidden dev again!  Needed that.  He's definitely raw, but his athleticism isn't as bad as it could have been.  His coverage and tackling need a lot of work.

There's a DT in the 2nd that I REALLY want.  So I'm going to sim to the early 2nd and try to trade up to make sure I get him.

*TRADE*

SEA Seahawks Receive

#55 overall (2)

#112 overall (4)

RT B Irons (81)

ARI Cardinals Receive

#33 overall (2)

The Seahawks trade back to 55, pick up a mid 4th, and get a new starting RT.  OT was listed as their team's biggest need, Irons struggled for me last year but maybe a change of scenery will help him.

With the 33rd Pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals Select:

DT Heath Herman, Penn State

Run Stopper (75), Speed Rusher (75), Power Rusher (70)

UJgHgRI.jpg

- OMG Normal dev.  What the hell, this guy had one of the most insane combines I've ever seen.  Very frustrating.  Still a solid player, just never going to be a star.  He will move to DE.

Time to sim to my other 2nd round pick.

On the board here is a pretty good speed rushing DE.  He's 6'4" 240 so he would move to OLB.  He ran a 4.72 in the 40, which was 3rd in the class, and he was top 5 in every other drill except for bench press.  He's listed as an Early 2nd round talent.  Then there's a really interesting TE, who was also top 5 in all combine drills except for bench.  He's listed as a mid first rounded and is only 21 years old (the DE is 23 years old).  The one thing I don't like about the TE is that he's only 6'3" 238 lbs which is kind of undersized for a TE.  But it is REALLY hard to draft TEs in this year's Madden.  Pass rusher is a bigger need but I think the TE is BPA here.

With the 48th Pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals Select:

TE Connor Price, Clemson

Vertical Threat (75), Possession (74), Blocking (67)

7vGgmtz.jpg

- Hidden dev!  Alright now we're rolling.  This is a great draft so far.  He's a legit athlete for the TE position, needs to work on his blocking though.  He should be a big part of my offense going forward.  I love this pick.  This is why you go BPA.

3rd round time.  I have several picks in short order here in the 3rd.

With the 80th Pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals Select:

SS Dallas Stewart, Tennessee State

Hybrid (67), Zone (65), Run Support (65)

CBokim1.jpg

- Only normal dev and raw.  Solid athlete.  Looks like a career backup.  Not ideal for the 3rd but not terrible.  21 years old, he will have time to develop.

With the 82nd Pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals Select:

RT Kyle Carroll, East Carolina

Agile (70), Pass Protector (67), Power (67)

J14tbRi.jpg

- Normal dev, I was hoping this guy would be high enough to start right away but he's pretty raw.  Good strength, 22 years old.  Not a terrible pick but not a homerun.  He might have to start anyways.  22 years old.

With the 87th Pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals Select:

ROLB Tory Mobley, Northwestern

Power Rusher (64), Run Stopper (63), Speed Rusher (61), Pass Coverage (54)

RheEAwZ.jpg

- Normal dev, and definitely raw. His Acceleration isn't great.  His pass coverage is always going to hurt him but hopefully he can contribute as a rotational pass rusher.  22 years old.

Hopefully the 4th round goes better than the 3rd....

With the 120th Pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals Select:

WR Cornell Graves, Minnesota

Deep Threat (66), Slot (62), Route Runner (58), Physical (57)

wlsM0s2.jpg

- Normal dev again, but his name is fantastic.  He has decent athleticism.  Should be a solid developmental WR.  22 years old.

That was it for the 4th, 5th round time.

With the 148th Pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals Select:

LT Tad Henderson, Arizona

Power (53), Agile (53), Pass Protector (52)

qp4kw0K.jpg

- Good lord.  Normal dev.  I didn't have him scouted but he had a solid combine.  This is a terrible pick I don't think he makes my roster.  Plus Tad is a stupid name.  Should have known.

With the 167th Pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals Select:

QB Tucker Brake, Pittsburgh

Scrambler (56), Field General (50), Strong Arm (49), Improviser (48)

izlJ2FB.jpg

- Ok I'll stop taking stabs in the dark.  This guy sucks he won't make my roster.

There is literally no one left that I have scouted.  I'll have to flip a lot of these for future picks.

5th round pick - traded to the Raiders for future 4th

6th round pick - traded to the Titans for a future 5th

7th round pick - traded to the Seahawks for a future 6th

That ends this draft.  I had some success early and picked up some solid depth in the middle rounds, but no homeruns late.

POST 2030 DRAFT RECAP

These are the top 10 player in the class:

#1 - CB Ben Kennedy - Drafted 2 by the Patriots - 78 OVR - Star dev

#2 - RG Jamal Brackens - Drafted 19 by the Texans - 77 OVR - Star Dev (ouch)

#3 - TE Cortney Priester - Drafted 25 by the 49ers - 77 OVR - Normal dev (and 24 years old)

#4 - RE Blake Farley - Drafted 4 by the Panthers - 76 OVR - Star dev

#5 - LE Maurice Howard - Drafted 6 by the Cowboys - 76 OVR - SS X Factor (wow!)

#6 - HB Jordan Silver - Drafted 16 by the Cardinals - 76 OVR - ????

#7 - RT Tim Burley - Drafted 18 by the Packers - 76 OVR - Star Dev

#8 - RE Trent Barnard - Drafted 1 by the Seahawks - 75 OVR - Superstar (they should have taken Howard)

#9 - RE Kyle Clemens - Drafted 7 by the Saints - 75 OVR - Star dev

#10 - TE Connor Price - Drafted 48 by the Cardinals - 75 OVR - ????

This was a pretty good class.  Only one Normal dev in the top 10.  WR Eric Charleston, the player I really wanted to trade up for, is 73 OVR with Normal dev.  This is why I don't trade up.

ROLB Ronnie Drayton is SS X Factor.  That QB Forbes is only Star Dev.

HB Silver will start.  HB Howard is actually a receiving back so he's a good compliment to the power game of Silver.

The WR core still sucks.  McGhee is my new starter but he's pretty average.

Rookie TE Price will start at TE.  TE Andrew will backup and probably start at FB since he's a blocker.  Not sure if that FB will make the roster.  Maybe he'll head to the PS.

The Oline needed help but didn't really get any.  Either RT Ryans or Carroll will start, but neither are ideal options.

The Dline was revamped, with Rookie DE Herman and FA acquisition DE Walton joining the fold.

The LBing core remains the same, which is a shame because it was a big weakness last year.

In the secondary, CB Ayers will get a shot as the #2 CB due to his star dev trait.  I'm probably going to shop SS Royal because he's regressing and in the way of Mills playing time.

CUTS - FINAL 53 ROSTER - YEAR 12

I have to cut 12 players, if they have PS eligibility left they will head there, unless they suck.

QB Tucker Brake (56) - CUT - the guy has 82 throw power.

FB Jordan Chandler (68) - PS - I don't have the roster spot to carry a developmental FB.

WR Denard Norwood (64) - PS - has good size, not fast though.

WR Michael Smallwood (64) - CUT - already 26 and not very good.

TE Curt Knowles (58) - CUT - not very good.

LT Tad Henderson (53) - CUT - scout players before you draft them.

LG Morgan Clemens (59) - CUT - not very good.

RT Brandon McCann (58) - CUT - not very good.

LE Kishon Bridge (57) - CUT - not very good.

RE Kemani Pugh (57) - CUT - not very good.

DT Russell Presley (57) - CUT - not very good.

FS Imani Chambers (64) - PS - he's solid.

TRADE DEADLINE UPDATE - YEAR 12

So I'm 2-3-1 at the deadline, which I think is one of the best tank jobs I've done early on in a season.  The ridiculous part is that I'm 2nd in the NFC West right now because the Seahawks and 49ers are awful.

Since the tank is on I'd love to get some more draft capital.  I don't think I have anything I'm willing to give up to get a first round pick, so I think I'll be targeting a 2nd.  I have some expiring contracts I could look at dealing.

*TRADE*

ATL Falcons Receive

DT L Myles (85)

ARI Cardinals Receive

2nd Round Pick

Myles is 28 and wants a 5 year contract extension.  I didn't draft him and think I can do better eventually, so I'm moving on.  The Falcons top need is a DT.
