Offense:

1RB-2WR-2TE Base – 55% run, 45% pass

Due to injuries and the success thus far in the season the two-TE approach has had, we see no reason to change the way we’re lining up and the style of football we’re playing as we head to Portland. We know they’ll be desperate as an 0-3 start and us starting 3-0 may end their season before it’s even started, but we’ve played divisional rivals in this situation plenty of times before and we know exactly what it takes to think.

Run it up the middle:

We’re making a change at running back this week with Melvin Gordon coming into the line-up to help take advantage of a Portland front which has further been hit by injury this week. With only 2 healthy edge rushers and 3 interior defensive line, the aim will be to completely grind them down in the first half and then feast on them in the 2nd half. Therefore we’re going to dial up a significant number of dives and off-tackle runs to churn out consistent gains and force the defensive linemen to exert a ton of energy in stopping our backs.

Play-action:

Between the threat of Allen as a runner and the fact Portland are short on defensive linemen, we know there’s going to be a significant focus on their back 7 playing up closer to the line of scrimmage in the hopes of stopping the run. So our plan will be to run a heavy amount of play action in the hope that their defensive backs bite and allow Brown get behind the defense or one of the tight-ends to break free on a seam route. In particular we’re going to look at Brown deep both in the play action and regular passing game, especially if he’s single covered as Allen appears to have finally worked out the deep passing game as well as Moore on slants and crossing routes where the linebackers are slow to react.

No Huddle:

While Portland are down on troops, it would be disingenuous to suggest that we’ve not been impacted by the injury troubles that have plagued the league this year. With the exception of the rotation at running back and the occasional Gesicki appearance split out wide, we won’t see a great deal of fancy personnel packages nor changes during the match, so we feel as though operating in the no huddle will fit our personnel and also allow us to continue to work the Portland defensive front with little opportunity to get a breather.

Defense:

With McCaffrey out and Davantae Adams looking unlikely to play at this stage, we’re looking forward to battling a severely weakened Portland offense. While there still is some talent floating around on that side of the ball for them, we feel as though our injury riddled D still has enough to be able to comfortably win the battle and take advantage of a struggling Cousins.

Firstly, in terms of coverage assignments our plan will be:

Gilmore – Thielen (Adams if he plays)
Bradberry – Williams
Jackson – WR3 (or Thielen if Adams plays)
Hyde – Andrews
Thompson – Running back

With Byard acting as the single high safety, and Jackson coming on for 4 WR sets to play in the slot or being assigned RB duty with Thompson shifting onto Sample/another TE should Portland opt to use a 12 lineup.

Otherwise we don’t intend to do anything outside of the ordinary, with our usual emphasis on rotating the defensive line and keeping guys fresh as well as the usual heavier lineups on earlier downs (i.e. Wilkins/Harris playing at end with Houston subbing out). Johnson will be given a green light to get downhill on running plays and try to blow up Barber/McKinnon in the backfield, as well have a mix of blitzing assignments on passing downs or simply covering the short/intermediate middle of the field for any crossers/slants.
