If the simple math says they can't eat the 35 this year and field a team then they care about it.

Did you even take a minute to TRY the simple math?

 https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/cap/   <- Let's start here

The (top 51) cap space for the Browns is 2.6M with a 10.035M charge for Watson and Mayfield at 18.858M with NO dead money.

So trade Baker before the completing the Watson trade and remove the new Watson cap charge and they have about 31.5M in cap space. So, they only need to make 3.5M in space which is cake. Amari Cooper has 20M salary with no dead cap or guarantees beyond this year so that is an extremely easy signing bonus conversion to clear 10M or more.

So yea 100% it would have been better for the Browns if Watson was on his old contract with no renegotiation, that's not even close to debatable.

Just out of curiosity... if they trade Baker before the trade with Houston becomes official... could Houston back out and trade him elsewhere?

No, Deshaun is the Texans GM on all things Watson until he is traded.

No Trade Clause... Its a stupid as it sounds.

One more thing. Dead cap for Watson is close to meaningless since his contract is 100% guaranteed.

Reworking Cooper means somewhat committing to him in the future by making a dead cap anchor.

Right now he has zero future dead cap since he was traded to the Browns and the Cowboys kept any of that (if there was any)

You decided that the Browns need to rework the 20 instead of the 35 to not hurt your feelings.

If you can't see the wrong then I'm done.

If you're done because you think they couldn't push 3.5M out of from Amari Cooper 20M base from 2022 cap charge** then you are done because you don't get cap or have realized your point don't work.

** There are also probably 10+ other contracts they could use to make that space

How many are 100% guaranteed?

If I was amari I wouldn't agree to a restructure unless it was my whole salary tbh

Give Amari a $10M signing bonus to reduce his 2022 salary from $20M to $10M. Amari gets the same money (maybe the signing bonus a couple months sooner than salary, not sure) and nothing else changes with regards to the future years. What would be his motivation for not?

Creates $6.6M in cap space for the Browns in 2022 since it is spread over the 3 years left on his deal. They can still cut him in 2023 or 2024 and only the remainder of the $6.6M sticks as dead cap.

The WR market is insane right now. Almost 100% chance he gets more than $10m guaranteed if they cut him. Really good chance he gets close to the APY as well. Amari has all the leverage to ask for more than $10m guaranteed if the browns push it. I would ask for all of it (about $18.7m)
