They're paying him starter money, so they're pretty high on him. He's a physically gifted lineman who helped a struggling O-line become pretty damn good last season. Beane loves continuity on the line, so it makes sense they wanted to keep him. His play was really good last season, but the sample size is small. He could be a beast, but it is a bit of a gamble paying him starter money based on such a small sample size of games. I think he'll be worth the money, especially with Kromer coaching him. Kromer may be the best O line coach in the league, so giving a physically gifted guard one of the best positional coaches is enticing as hell. THE DUKE
$4.25 mil/year isn't bad for a top backup even if he wasn't a starter. This is why it's best to front load deals against the cap when you try to sign RFA's from good teams. Should have done something silly like a $10 million year 1 roster bonus and then low base salaries the next 3 years, that would have made it much harder for the Bills to match. Yeah The Bills took a gamble by offering him the original round RFA tender, with the right to match, but no draft pick compensation. It gave CHI the chance to steal him away. Thing is, the 2nd round tender is just under 4M. So offering a a 4/18M deal with 8.8M/2 is barely over that number. Pretty easy for BUF to decide to match. It's not hard to find more $ in the cap to get 3M more. BUF's FO made a tactical error, but CHI gave them a pass by not frontloading it. The winner here is Bates obv...lol. Good for him.
