Here's one version of players Who's Hot? In this case, the author likes MVS, Bryan Cook, Nick Bolton, George Karlaftis, and Jody Fortson. If he's right, that would be a very useful group to get big improvements from. In order, that covers high volume WR, box safety, MLB and defensive captain, LDE, second TE.

  • 4 weeks later...

Player report on Friday, 22 July. What are you primary questions for the upcoming camp and preseason?

Here are a few

  • Who steps up as a goto receiver? Kelce is a given but they have been beating him up for years.
  • Can we trust our WR unit?
  • How will be be at OT? OB Jr is unsigned and Niang is not close to ready at RT.
  • After Karlaftis, Jones and Clark, who will bring the heat? If those three get 20+ sacks it will be a success. That's still a dozen sacks short of last season's total.
  • How will we play our base nickel defense? I suspect a lot more 3-3-5 than in prior years. Both Gay and Chenal have potential as edge rushers.
  • How will playing time divide among the top six in the secondary? Right now that appears to be Sneed, McDuffie, Johnson, Reid, Thornhill, Cook. Add Fenton when he's healthy.
  • What will be the defense's attitude? We are a lot younger, bigger and more athletic. Will we be more aggressive and physical?

A pre-camp attempt at the 53 man roster. I have several points of disagreement, but at least he pays ST their due.

I agree with most of that list.  Couple differences from the one I did a month or so ago.
Geran Christian > Roderick Johnson
Lucas Niang > Jerrick McKinnon(he’d make it now that he’s on the team.
Taylor Stallworth > Khalen Saunders
Shilique Calhoun > Malik Herring (don’t really see either of them make it, still some veterans out there)

TC will settle who the swing OT will be. The OL I disagree with is Austin Reiter. Lucas Niang will be PUP or early season IL, so no conflict with any RB.
Not both McKinnon and R Jones but a ST as 7th WR.
4th DT will be a thing to watch.
I think Malik Herring will make the team. He has a lot of upside. I would not be shocked if Calhoun made the 53 as well.
Not both Carter and Lee at LB. Mike Rose will make the roster and star on ST.
Fenton starts the season PUP freeing one slot, probably a veteran ST player though not Lammons.
Nazeeh Johnson > Deon Bush. Either one would be for ST but they drafted Johnson to lead the unit.

Relevant here, there are several players who may not be ready for game #1. The biggest three are Lucas Niang, Rashad Fenton, and Justyn Ross. For now, I intend to leave them off any 53-man roster.

Yeah Swing OT is on the fence.  Roderick Johnson just seemed like a PS guy, with the occasional call up if necessary.
Reiter is just there as an emergency center, ala Blythe last year.   It’s pretty clear they don’t view Allegretti as a good option at C.  I don’t like Reiter, but he can be what Blythe was last year.
Ehh.  I don’t see the hubbub with Herring,  typical late round prospect that gets hyped up more because he sat out a year.   I would love to be wrong though.
I think they’ll opt for 2 vets in the young LB room personally, unless Cochrane or Rose really show out.  Would be nice to have 2 vets in the meetings room, rather than Bolton and Gay having to do the bulk of the work there also.
I do like Lammons.
Bush>Johnson was a similar case to the LB.  Would be nice to have a vet in the room,  with Thornhill being the only one experienced playing in this defense at Saf.

I can see the arguments though.  Those were just my safe picks, I think they’ll choose some vet leadership as depth on D with so many young guns.    There will be some solid battles for sure

  • I agree about Johnson. We have a lot of development time invested in Prince Tega Wanogho. I am not sure who is higher.
  • If we must have a dedicated backup C, Reiter is one we know. I just hope that we don't use the spot for such a narrow specialization.
  • Until the injury in the Senior Bowl, Herring was pointing toward 3rd to 5th round. That was because he was seen as a tweener, likely needing to convert to DT. Spags loves guys that can play both ways. Regardless, he is a pass rush player. He also has a ton of leadership chops.
  • Technically Gay is already a veteran. Whoever they choose as LB4 and LB5 will need to play ST very well. Rose would be natural for ST. You want Bolton doing the bulk of the meeting room work.
  • I wonder if Lammons is more than camp body. He burned some bridges last season.
  • Bush can only play ST and he lacks the speed you want on the leading edge. Johnson appears to have been drafted for not only play ST but also lead them.

Yeah we’ll just have to disagree on Herring.  He was widely viewed as a 6th/7th round guy.. but gets hyped higher due to injury unknowns. Similar to Tim Ward everyone shoots for the stars with the unknown.

I was more talking Film room with the vets at LB and Saf.  Bolton and Reid will lead the D,   Carter/Lee/Bush are all excellent ST’ers are can help more in the film room.

Not saying I’m right,  there is some overhyping of late round and udfa’s going on right now though that happens every year. It’s just that time of the news year

If Herring is everything he's hyped to be then he's a spot pass rusher who can play either DT or DE. That's useful but not a huge deal. Like you, it would not surprise me if he was on the practice squad. For now he makes the roster because of the lack of depth.

I think we definitely keep a veteran LB, my guess is Carter or Lee but not both. The ST ace who has not been mentioned is Zayne Anderson. He's listed at safety like Bush.

Who’s everyone’s most intriguing player in camp?

Chanel is one of mine. Excited to see how Spags uses him especially on passing downs

Also really wanna see how healthy JuJu is and how quickly he and Mahomes get their rapport

  • I have several. I want to see if reports on MVS and Skyy Moore are accurate. Jody Fortson and Noah Gray could be the offense's secret weapons. Chenal could have a big impact. Hopefully, they steal some of Kelce's playing time.
  • Still, the whole defense is going to turn around a former Mizzou LB, Nick Bolton. I want to see how well that takes.
  • Me, too. Leo is a big LB. He could conceivably play as a stand up DE in a nickel set and has the pass rush chops for it. There would be no worries about his ability to set the edge.
  • JuJu could be nice, but what I have read makes MVS the one to watch. Still, we have never had much size at WR. JuJu brings a lot of it.
