Anchorage

Overview:
Time to beat the brakes off of Flint. Flint’s owner broadcasted that we should have lost last week while they got to kick their feet up against a cupcake opponent that didn’t show up. Well we are showing up and bringing the Hurricane to the Tropics.

Offense: 3 Wide (40%), 4 Wide (30%), 2 TE (30%):
We look to a 55/45 Pass/Run play distribution again this week. And our key areas of focus will be:

• Spread out the Flint D

• Audible Heavy to attack alignment weaknesses

• More Inside Zone against widened dline. More Outside Zone against pinched dline

• Play Action and Roll Outs

• Chip Bosa and double Simmons

Spread Em!:
We are going to spread Flint out. They have a strong defense but we feel their greatest strength is their dline and their corner depth is lacking. We will run a lot of 3 Wide looks with Pitts inline but we will also motion Pitts out into a big slot role. We will also line up in traditional 4 wide with Cooks on the outside opposite DPJ and Hollywood and Campbell in the slots. In 2 TE sets, Likely will be our second TE, and we will rotate our four main receivers through X and Z roles. Combo routing and working underneath while providing deeper depth of targets as well, creating a multi tier attack for Burrow to build rhythm and pick apart weaker matchups is our forte and will be our passing game focus. We will support this with more play action later in the game as the running game gets going early. We will motion always, slowing down the game but also giving us reads on coverage and easy press beaters off the line. Motioning our Z to our X side at times giving us a three wide on one side. We are going to heavy audible this game based on dline alignment and motion follower movement. If we see the nickel/dime/outside corner follow our motions we will audible to heavy attack areas vacated presnap to try and beat replacement coverage in zone/target open space in man.

Gash em and Dash em:
Zone rushing game is key and as mentioned we will use audibles often throughout this game for both the pass and run game. When we run the ball, if we see a widened out dline we will often audible to more inside zone runs and if we see a pinched down line we will often audible to more outside zone runs. Balanced dline formations will see an even amount of inside/outside zone. Motion follower movement will also result in more runs to the side of the vacated defender either inside or outside zone depending on dline alignments. The Taylor/Jacobs 60/40 snap split returns this week.

Play Action and Roll Outs:
We will run play action off of our run game. As the defense tries to key on our audibles and where we are running based on their dline alignment this will open up our play action game even more as they over anticipate the run. We will use different tiered crossers and look for primarily quick play action shots, but include a deep route each PA play allowing us big play opportunities if protection holds. We will incorporate some roll outs to move the pocket and buy more time for Burrow on the move. Our 2 TE sets will allow us balance in our run game but also in our play action to attack either side of the field and flip routes alternating sides giving different defenders different looks making it more difficult to key on tendencies.

Pass Protection:
We will help chip with our backs or TE against Bosa before releasing to their routes. We will double Simmons inside whenever possible. The motions, play action, roll outs, and spread out attack should help us mitigate much of the Flint pass rush and blitzes. Flint has a great dline but we believe we have a great Oline to hold up against them. We have been cross training Dalton Risner at C for over a week, where he was a Freshman All American in college due to McCoy going on IR and in case Ragnow can’t go. If Dalton needs to move to center we will start Salyer at LG where he has been cross training as well as he also has college experience there.

Defense: Nickel Base, Dime against 4/5 wide, 4-3 against 2 TE sets:
We will run a 65/35 Zone (Cover 2/3/6) to Man Ratio in our base as we want to give the Flint offense different looks and keep them on their toes all game. We will play gap disciplined against the run.

• Keep the hits coming on Allen

• Mix coverages and make plays

• Plug running lanes

Smash Allen:
Micah’s primary role is to hunt Allen. Make his life miserable this game. Allen’s still hurt as tough as he is and playing through it, but we want him to feel every play. Micah mainly blitzes, delay blitzes, spies, and meets at the mesh point on RPO’s wreaking havoc on Allen. The delay blitzes will allow Micah to read run and Allen’s pocket movement and then hunt him down. Micah’s secondary role is to be a middle zone disruptor/spy. When he isn’t blitzing he will split between showing blitz and dropping back or already at depth like he will be on some blitzes all to disguise the different roles. We will sometimes send Simmons/Hufanga as a blitzer when Micah is in middle zone/spy. Four quarters is going to feel like four lifetimes as The Lion and his pride prey on Josh.

Coverage:
As mentioned we will be in a 65/35 zone/man split in our nickel base. We are going to be patient and disciplined in coverage, coached to not bite on double moves, get to our zones and stick to our man. In our base we are going to play Simmons and Baker based on which RB is in the game. If Foreman/Singletary are in Simmons is at Stud. If Kamara/Gibson are in at RB, Baker will be in the game at Stud. If Baker can’t go then Simmons will be the full time Stud. When in man Surtain has Deebo when outside, if Deebo is inside Surtain has Moore. Horn has whoever is in the slot and Jaylon has the other outside receiver. Simmons/Baker has RB and Hufanga has Kittle in man with Bates single high. Hufanga will be playing down in the box bailing to deep half coverage responsibility in cover 2 and 6 as we are always pressing on the outside even with our bailing corners in zone, buying him time to get deep. Budda and Simmons/Hufanga will follow Kittle/RB out regardless of coverage to help disguise man/zone and we will shift zone responsibility if in zone. Against actual 4 wide (not Kittle split out) Budda moves to the Dime role over the 4th receiver. Simmons is in at Stud if Foreman/Singletary are in and Hufanga is then in at Stud if Kamara/Gibson are in. We will play zones predominantly in our Dime. Allen has thrown 6 interceptions in the last 3 games and we believe mixing coverages will give us key turnover opportunities in this game.

Against 2TE, 2RB, 5 Wide:
Against 2 TE sets we look to run a 4-3, Simmons/Parsons/Hufanga at the second level with Budda as the SS. Horn and Surtain are our outside corners. We will run primarily zone likely a 80/20 split in this formation with zone/man. When we do run man Baker will take Kittle, Simmons TE2 and Hufanga has RB. Against the 2 RB sets we will have two variations. 2 RB/2 WR/1 TE we will run the same 4-3. Simmons has Foreman/Singletary when in man and Hufanga has Kamara/Gibson. If Kamara and Gibson are both in we will have Hufanga cover Kamara and Simmons cover Gibson. 2 RB/3WR we will play our nickel with Hufanga as the Stud. Baker has Kamara and Hufanga has RB2. We will look for a 70/30 zone/man split against all 2 RB formations. If they go 5 Wide we will play a 3 man front and bring in Simmons and Hufanga in our Dime and run zone.

Run Defense and Dline:
Gap disciplined defense. We will two gap with our nose either Double A or A/B, freeing up Parsons to attack the RPO’s/Allen. When Parsons is shooting a gap on a blitz he is occupying that gap and we will use the defender normally filling that gap to fill another gap, freeing our Stud to read RB and stuff the run. We look to funnel the run back inside and limit big plays outside.  If a second level follows a motion out we will shift gap responsibility as needed. We will rotate our Dline just enough to keep players fresh. Against 4 wide on clear passing downs we will look to use a NASCAR package of Hutchinson and Highsmith on the edges with Chubb and Oliver inside. The 5 wide front will be Vita at NT with Chubb and Oliver as 4 techs.

Flint

Tough game this week. It's not a must win but it's an opportunity to win our division and with Jamar Chase out we gotta take. Our roster's been healthy for the first time in forever and we can put out our best lineups and supplement it with solid depth.

Offense
We have our weapons back and healthy. The strength of our offense goes beyond the individual players and towards the types of personnel we have. We can bring different looks at any time and cause confusion in motion along with having a mobile QB, strong-armed QB and a versitile stable of backs. We really want to go off and do a bit of everything but we'll focus on 3 and 4 WR sets this game with the occasional 5 WR and 2 TE sets. Kamara will be our main back but he won't be on every down. James Conner and D'Onta Foreman are going to be our pounders while Singletary is going to see more Kamara-like roles and be used in the passing game. Antonio Gibson is our other Deebo and we'll want him on in many 4 and 5 WR sets he and Deebo will motion to and away from the backfield to act as a runner or receiver or even time it with the snap to cause some extra consufion, with and without RPOs. With the run game we want to mix up inside and outside runs fairly evenly with the occasional sweep and of course Allen with the run, whether designed or in the RPO. Kittle will be mostly used from his true TE role this game but Hurst will take his spot when Kittle lines up as a WR. Hooper has shown to be an excellent goalline TE as of late so we will use him in 2 and 3 TE sets in the redzone as well as getting Decker in for 6OL sets. We want to primarily use slants, digs and outs, as well as our backs and receivers are also coming back for some curl routes. Will will take our deep shots. This is not the time to play scared, but they will be calculated and we want our movement and use of personnel to find breaks in coverage. We expect a 60-40 Pass-run split, not accounting for RPOs.

Defense
We're going back to the 3-4 defense this week although we will still switch to 4-3 and 4-2 looks often. We feel we have a strength in our defensive front 7 and our line in particular but we don't want to do any 5-man fronts like last week. We want to bring the most fearsome guys we can to make Joe Burrow uncomfortable, even behind a good line. We are showing up in a 3-4 with Simmons at DT, Jarrett at nose and Wise at DE. All three have shown the ability to stop the run and pass rush at a high level. Wilkins, like Jarrett, has the versatility to move in to any of these positions and will come in the rotation often to give the others a rest. Bosa and Hughes will be on the outside, with Hughes getting up and showing a 3-point stance at times. Clowney will rotate in often, especially as the Edge on the 3-4. Jerry Hughes will often move to DE when in the 4-3 with Wise coming off. Jewell and Edwards should do really well in stopping the run and getting some pressure on the pass rush, especially TJ on the latter. Al-Shaiir will rotate on to give them rest while the 3rd LB in the 4-3 will usually be Nick Scott, as had been the case most of this season. Mike Hilton is our Nickel guy and he will be coming on as the nickel in all situations we play nickel except when Scott disguises as a LB in a 4-3. We have confidence in our DBs and LBs in coverage vs Anchorage's passing attack but we still need to be wary of their TEs, RB and play in the slot. Jewell and Edwards' main focuses are to watch those routes and the run. Hilton and Scott will also be tasked with watching the inside receivers when on the field. And Kearse or Amos will be called to rotate or be the 3rd safety.

This front seven, in this formation, we feel will be able to stop the run inside and out while also getting maximum pressure from the front 3/4 to Burrow. The pressure will be coming with our edge rushers often and they will also try to keep him from stepping up into the pocket. We believe that with less time and Jamar Chase out that it should prove difficult for him to find his rythym. We need to make sure Pitts doesn't get a clean break when he's lined up on the line and just keep it in the back of our minds that Anchorage could pass it to their backs. They aren't known to do it often but it does happen and we don't want to be caught off guard. IF we have numbers on their receivers then Love will come into the box to help vs the run.
Our victory will come down to if we can stop the run while getting our business done on offense.

If I was voting this week, I would go with Anchorage.  Flint only having three active CB this week (Fenton was inactive) really tips the scale when Anchorage goes four wide and with no mention of Zone, thats the deciding factor in what otherwise would be a very close game

Kearse has played corner before, I have multiple Safeties with experience at slot corner. I don't see how having only 2 outside corners who normally see 100% of snaps a game is an issue especially with Hollywood Brown out. I just don't see the depth criticism making much sense.

...when....where...?

I think you'd be better off having Kearse play the LB/SS role like he does in real life and Mathieu play the nickel.

I'm just saying he has, not that he'd for sure being the one to do it. But either way I have many capable bodies to play slot corner and I have mentioned the 3rd safety as well. 2 outside corners that stay on the field, 3 safeties plus Hilton plus another 2 DBs on the bench with one designated LB/S, so my DB depth won't be a problem even with Fenton out.

I've got to read through the game plans, but a couple things.

Yes JaMarr Chase and Hollywood Brown are not in this game; but i think there is some serious underrating going on in regards to DPJ, heck even Mack Hollins is having a good season for a depth WR. And Cooks would fill in just fine for Brown.

I do think only having 3 CBs is a huge negative for Flint. But I also think they have a really glld offense. Imma go read the gameplans and try to come to a decision.
