Cap relief and some depth.  Nurkic is much cheaper than Ayton and can be used similarly.  Allen and Little are decent depth pieces to fill in after giving away so much for Durant.  Ayton is the better player but not how they utilize him, so makes sense to move off him.

they don't get cap relief. devin booker is the 3rd highest paid player on the team lol.

The Bucks got Dame for Jrue and a ham sandwich jesus no way the Heat offer was worse. I guess if you flip him to the Kings or something for more picks but... man.

That 2029 unprotected 1 and those pick swaps could be valuable. Our roster isn't young ha. They very well could have viewed that pick as the best piece on the market for Dame from their options.

They got flexibility.  Liitle and Nurkic are the only contracts that extend beyond this year.  Allen and Johnson could be traded at their cost easier than Ayton.  Next year they are on the hook for approx 22M instead of 36M if they kept Ayton.  The cap relief helps.  Not to mention that Nurkic is also easier to move than Ayton with a smaller contract and similar production.

Nurkic is not great but he had very similar production to Ayton with a few less points which is fine given they wont look to him to score anyways.  And for those saying he is injury prone and declining, Dame has missed significant time the last 4 years too.  Nurkic is very average but having an average C and depth in Allen and Little will help the current Suns team more than Ayton did.

I think Ayton should have more value and is easily the better player, but they don't utilize him and given this, I am sure he was shopped during the offseason and got no bites.  His value is obviously low because of the contract, but turning 1 6 win share player into a 2.7 (Nurkic), 5.1 (Allen), and .7 (Little) will help them more IMO given their depth was trash after the Durant trade.

ayton quit on the team last year and was better than nurkic has ever been. grayson is literally the best player they got back. nurkic is also a massive injury risk.

also how does the cap relief help?

Cap/tax relief.  It doesnt allow them to sign anyone but it lowers the tax they pay.  It also makes it easier to move salary if they chose to because 36M in 4 players is easier to move to a team than 1 guy.  It gives them more flexibility at a minimum and saves them a bunch of luxury tax money next year.  So it doesn't greatly help the team in that way but it does help the franchise which is why they did it.  But at the same time they got depth back that can help the current constructed roster better than Ayton will.

This trade does not help the Suns on the court at all.
