Cancun

Offense: We figure our line isn’t going to win much as blockers anyways, so we’re going to come out throwing early and often. Olave won’t be coming off the field and we’re opening up the full route tree for him as we motion him around the formation; he’s our No. 1 target today and we want to feed him the ball as much as possible since Rome won’t be able to press him at the line. We’re leaving offensive weapon Juszczyk in as a blocker to help out the tackles, and utilizing the shotgun formation to give Mahomes more time to throw and read the defense. We also want to include a couple screen passes to Stevenson early to get the pass rush out of his face.

We aren’t going to totally abandon the run game but we don’t plan on giving Jones or Singletary many carries; Jones will be used as a receiver out of the backfield primarily, and Singletary will function as an extra blocker when we go with 3 WR/1 TE sets. Stevenson should get about 15 carries with Jones and Singletary getting maybe 10 combined.

At receiver and tight end, we want to rotate guys in across from Olave and also bring out some 3 WR sets to spread out the defense. Gesicki, Mayer, and Juszczyk will all split time at tight end, Juszczyk when we have Jones on the field in 3 WR sets, Gesicki when we have Juszcyzk in at FB, and Mayer the rest of the time.

This week we get Rome. They’re a balanced offense, and we expect them to use a lot of 3 WR sets with a TE.

We will run nothing but Cover 3 variations this week, playing bend but don’t break and then playing more man/match and sending pressure once they enter the Red Zone, knowing our front 7 will be able to hold up against the run and be able to pressure Herbert. We feel confident that if the game is on the line late, he will do what he does best and choke.

We anticipate his answer being “flood routes to beat zone”, and we are going to deny the deep and intermediate flood routes and make him throw it in the flat where Werner or the apex defender will match up nicely with his RB/TE (Werner) or WR (apex).

We also anticipate him believing he can run the ball at will on us, but with us playing exclusively Cover 3 until the red zone, the safety will be in the box as the bonus defender.

Formations /Approach

Formations /Approach

While we list 11 personnel as the starters , we also will use four wr, 2 RB. 5 wide and even some two te/fb jumbo sets.  There's not a major base formation this week as we want to attack Cancun in all facets of the game.  We are going to maintain a pass heavy offense. Running about a 60-40 pass to run ratio. Obviously we'll switch that up if we need to run some clock at any point.

Up Front /the running game

Rome is happy to bring Terron Armstead into the starting lineup this week to solidify a great offensive line.  Cancun brings in a solid defensive line with a good trio of edges and Jonathan Allen inside who also is having a really good season.  The second DT spot is a bit underwhelming however so we plan on being able to double Allen inside and let either of the guards take on that second DT solo.   Ramcyk has been his usual dependable self.  We'll have a chip ready to help Armstead if we feel he needs it.   This entire line can be excellent road graders however and we feel we can get some push against Rousseau, thibs, and company if Cancun foolishly lines them up next to to each other Putting Kamara, out of two RB looks, in motion out should lighten the box or allow for a quick RPO hit to him outside if no one goes with him with two wr blocking in front.  We also have no problem going into heavy formations and running right up the gut with Ertz leading the way for Swift.   As an added running game wrinkle, we have a couple QB draws out of empty sets ready against a zone heavy defense with retreating LB.   We are going to use all types of runs here, zones, power os, dives, and off tackles. We trust the offensive line and Swift and Harris to get some nice gains for us.

The passing game

This week, we are preparing  for all of our zone buster routes and plays.   We have our floods, seams, levels and new this week swing screens to Kamara or Swift to attack the zones.  If we are seeing majority cover two we are gonna hit that space on the sideline between the corner and safety or on the deep side middle post to Waddle or Cooper .   We have a savvy group of WR who know how too find the hole in the zone and sit in them.  Herbert can extend plays with his legs if needed to find angles to hit the WR. Waddle is especially dangerous with the ball in his hands so we are going to scheme combo routes to get him open. We definitely think he can run past any of the it corners in a cover three unless they are plying super off coverage.  If we see it, Herbert and Waddle know to hit the quick pass where one missed tackle is a huge gain   Allen is a slot master and should be able to sit in a zone easily with his chemistry with Herbert already established.  Woods brings a fourth veteran WR when we go four wide

If for whatever reason we see them going man, we will switch to more of a quick hit underneath type of game with Allen and Cooper doing most of the dirty work.   We'll often move a RB in motion to get a one on one with a LB or if they assign a safety to him, we'll flex out Kincaid against the LB.  If it's a cover one look we'll streak Waddle down the sideline to see if we can hit a big play

The other thing we are going to to incorporate more is the screen game which will slow down their edge rushers as well. All three of of our RB are excellently pass catchers to we plan on hitting them with little dig routes underneath against the zone to pick up four - five easy yards against bailing LB

The QB

Justin Herbert has been outstanding this year and we are going to lean on him this week to make the right reads.  We obviously have a way better line than he has in real life life and when given time this year, his rocket arm has been deadly

Defense

This week we are going to more of a press man cover two look with the clear offemdove line deficiency of Cancun, we want to make sure there are no quick hitter, easy reads for Mahomes.  We'll occasionally run a cover three zone and cover four zone (cover four in 15 plus more yards to go)

Up front

I don't really have to bring up the shambles the Cancun line is in.  We are gonna rotate our interior guys with Billings getting some run down work and Autry switching to ends in those sets for Barrett.   Jefferson replaces Tomlinson on obvious pass downs. Harris will give us an extra body whenever someone needs a break on the interior while Karlaftis is there for depth at the edge. Mahomes is going to under a siege of pressure just rushing four.   If they decide go keep someone in, the player assigned to to him will rush the passer or have the option to middle zone spy Mahomes

Back 7

Reed is going to have Olave. Our safety on that side will make sure he has hell over the top.   Peterson gets Reynolds and and Carter gets Moore.   Land comes in for wr 4 and we'll play a cover three zone against five wide.   Milano has Jones while foye gets the TE.    In our cover three Delpit will play middle zone while foye gets to the the flats on his side. Any two TE sets Holcomb comes on for te2. Two RB set will see Hamilton on for whoever was in charge of the player leaving.

I was about to vote for Rome but this line won it for me. I can be easily corrupted by trashing the Chargers.

Nah seriously, both teams have tackle woes but at least Rome can field Havenstein off the bench and put Ramsczyk on the left side - and I feel like Rome has a better roster overall outside of that.

Armstead has his non injured knee rolled up on during the game that knocked him out.  How they found a part of his body that wasn't injured yet to hurt goes beyond me
