Rome Eternals

Offense

This week, we look to run a more balanced attack against a stout Orlando defense.  We will list the aforementioned lineup as our starters but we will be rotating in players constantly throughout the game to give Orlando tons of different looks and personal groups to have to scheme for,  We will have two TE, four wide receivers, traditional i formations, three TEs, and even five wide.  Brees is the master of finding the mismatches on the defensive side and exploiting it.  We feel we have provided him with a bevy of offensive weapons with different skill sets to make his life easier.  If Brees happens to find a personal group he can take advantage of, expect a hurry up offense to trap that personnel on the field. We will incorporate hurry up quite often this week as Orlando only has one  extra edge to rotate into the lineup

In order to succeed against Orlando, you have to block up front.  Luckily for us, our line is one of our team;s biggest strengths.  Luckily for us Orlando lines up its two weakest lineman next to each other in Beasley and Poe,  This allows us to slide our line protection towards the Suh, Bosa side of the field during passing downs.  One of our RB will chip off the opposite side before entering his route to make sure Brees has ultimate protection.  The Orlando CB corps isn’t all that awesome, so we don’t expect them to bring many blitzes. However, if they do, we anticipate Brees being able to read this and hit his hot route for consistent gains.

Now, despite all that talk about passing, we know our bread and butter this week is gonna be on getting Todd Gurley going.  We believe we have the line to block the interior which should allow us to get some power o’s and off tackle plays against a solid line.  We especially look to run directly at Bosa who struggles in the power run game despite being an excellent pass rusher.  The Suh, Bosa side of the line is also ultra aggressive so expect a bunch of HB screens there way as an extension of our running game as they fly past the play.  We will also have Riddick take a couple carries in our base to keep the defense honest and Mack to rotate in for a handful of plays when Gurley needs a break

The main wrinkle we use in our base formation is Theo Riddick this week.  With his pass catching skills he will generally be going into motion if we see two LB.  This will help in two ways.  One, it gives us a lighter box for Gurley to run through, and two, it allows Brees to diagnose pre snap if it is a zone or man coverage as the LB will have to follow Riddick way our wide in man coverages.  If Drew reads man he has the option of audibling to some slant and quick routes to our route running receivers or even hit a deep ball to Coleman over Bradbury if we get that matchup.  While Jalen Ramsey is quite good, we like our matchups against the other Orlando corners, especially when we split out four or five wide

TL?DR     Uptempo offense.  Even split amongst pass and run.  Use motion with a RB to diagnose man or zone.  Give Brees ability to audible often and freely to what is working

Defense

How do we make life difficult for Wilson?  Basically we are going to be setting the edges with Curry and Dunlap and we will constantly be bringing in a blitzer right up the middle.  Behind this blitz we will be mixing cover two and cover three zones mainly.  We will sporadically be sprinkling in some man, but expect a 65-70 percent zone blitz defense  We feel this is the best option as the weapons for Orlando generally use their size and strength to beat coverage instead of route running ability.   To beat zone, you must run crisp routes and the QB must have the time to let his WR find the holes in the zone.  The zone look also allows for our defenders to keep an eye on the quarterback at all times to prevent any scrambling,  We have inserted Josh Jones in as our safety hybrid LB role to patrol deep and match up size wise in centerfield with the Gronkster.  Generally Addae will be our underneath LB in zone with Chung, a corner and Jones over the top.

Orlando has two solid tackles but their interior play has been abysmal for the Ospreys this season and that is where we plan on attacking.  Michael Brockers will line up over the LG and eat up his blocking.  This will allow Tomlinson and our blitzer one on ones with the two other interior players.  Tomlinson has been outstanding his rookie season and will constantly be a headache for whoever Orlando plays at RG.  Mosely will generally be our second blitzer and takes on Nick Martin who is one of the worst centers in the league.

This tactic should also work well against North South runner Carlos Hyde.  Setting the edges and blitzing the gap should eliminate the run game provided one has the defensive interior to eat up blocks.  Luckily for us, we have a man mean wall.   Michael Brockers has always been an extremely good run stopper while Dunlap is no slouch himself on the edge.  With an extra safety starting in the box, it can also help us prevent sweeps and pitches if they occur.

We will rotate in McKinley and Brown liberally for passing downs or if someone needs a break.  Ioannidis is also available as an extra big boy up front.  Fowler comes to rush to passer with Takk on the outside while curry and Dunlap plays inside in a NASCAR look for third and longs.  On plays involving man, we have Jackson on Jeffrey, Humphrey on Evans, and Amukamara on Bryant.  Jones would get Gronk with help over the top.  Our PFF fact of the week, our two normal safeties and all four corners are all ranked in the top 30 at their positions.  Despite the lack of big names, this group is producing

TL/DR-  Blitz the hell out of Wilson up the middle as he has struggled with pressure IRL.  Mix some man in with majority zone.  Set the edges and contain big plays.

Orlando Motivation

Orlando took last week off to rest some players, get past some suspensions, and get as healthy as possible. The players have been hyped and are ready to go. We welcome Rome onto our home turf where we plan on coming out of this game with a solid victory. Our plan on offense this week is to spread out the linebackers and give Rome too many assignments with our playmakers. On defense we plan on getting to Brees and shutting down Gurley.

QB and O-Line/TE

First, we recognize our weakness on offensive line after losing Travis Swanson and Ali Marpet to injury. To help with these deficiencies we plan on moving the pocket rolling out Russell Wilson. This does two things, it mitigates any pass rush that Rome will attempt to bring, especially from Brockers and Tomlinson, and it also highlights the strength of our Tackles (Lewan and Johnson) while masking the deficiencies in the interior. We also have Russell Wilson leading the offense who is the best QB in the NFL (h/t Aaron Rodgers) at making plays on the move. Rome will be forced to spy Wilson with a linebacker or be gashed by him taking off. Moving the pocket also does wonders for our passing and running game. Our offensive game plan will adjust to how they play the moving pocket, if Woodyard is set to spy Wilson Gronk will see 10+ targets and have a monster game against the weak coverage of Mosely or a CB that he will have 6” and 60lbs on. If Woodyard is covering Gronk he will still see targets but we would expect Wilson to gash Rome on the ground.

RBs

At RB we welcome back Alvin Karmara to our three headed monster. Kamara, Hyde, and McKinnon will all see similar usage in the running game (55/40/5). Our RBs will either chip on the interior and provide an underneath safety valve for Wilson to throw to (another LB responsibility on the pile) or they will move with Wilson and the line for pitches or sweeps to the outside. Our RBs excel in the passing game and as a safety valve in the middle they will also provide Wilson a quick option in the instance of any Blitzes sent by Rome. Our running game will regularly target Fowler as he’s an undersized DE that will get mauled by Lewan and having a terrible year to boot.

WRs

Now for the passing game.  As noted above Gronk should be very active in order to challenge the Linebackers of Rome. With Gronk and the RBs forcing coverage in the short and intermediate game we expect the WRs to challenge Rome in the intermediate and long areas. We believe that Rome has some solid corners but we believe that our WRs will still have some success for multiple reasons, first with a moving pocket Rome will be forced to hold their coverage longer, this is a challenge no matter how talented your CBs are. Second we have a distinct size advantage, Evans and Bryant are both 6’5” monsters and Alshon is no slouch at 6’3” with a massive catching radius. We expect Evans to be double covered but Alshon and Bryant will see plenty of looks. We will also on occasion show a 4-5 wide to get the talented Marquise Goodwin and Robert Woods onto the field with these monsters and challenge the depth of Rome.

TL;DR – We’re going to move the pocket to mitigate the pass rush and force longer coverages on Rome. Wilson will beat them with his legs or his arm. The Rome LBs are going to be forced to cover too many things (Wilson, Gronk, RBs in the passing game). We expect to put some points on the board.

Orlando Defense

DL

The Staring four of Bosa – Suh – Poe – and Beasley returns. This week against Rome we plan on attacking the interior of the line. Wisniewski is highly questionable with an ankle injury so Suh should have a field day against with a hobbled LG or someone who will be thrust into the position for the first time. On the other side Rome features Ramon Foster who is having a down season. On obvious passing downs Bosa will slide inside and Poe will come off the field in favor of Lawson to put even more pressure on the interior to keep Brees clean. The depth of the Orlando D Line is key here. At DE we will be rotating in Lawson as one of the most productive pass rushers in the NFL despite being a rookie. At DT we will rotate in Danny Shelton and Kenny Clark to keep the defense fresh.  We expect to get regular pressure with our front 4 which should collapse the pocket on Brees and limit the running lanes for Gurley.

LB

At LB we will be starting Bobby Wagner and Danny Trevathan. Wagner’s responsibility today will be to spy Gurley and the All Pro LB will limit Gurley in both the running and passing game. Trevathan’s main responsibility will TE (or second RB) coverage and blitzing. If Rome decides to come out with a two TE set Jatavis Brown will see the field and draw the other coverage responsibility.

Secondary

Jalen Ramsey will be up to the task of shutting down Michael Crabtree, Bradberry will be on Corey Coleman, and BBC will be on Amendola/Ginn. We don’t forsee any issues with these match-ups and will be featuring press coverage by our CBs to limit the quick passing ability of Brees.  Rodney McLeod will play a deep center field to limit the deep passing game. Keanu Neal will be brought up into the box to assist on Gurley and limit his lanes as well as to provide safety Blitzes to take away time from Drew Brees.

TL;DR – Wagner will key in on and shut down Gurley, CBs will press WRs to eliminate the short passing game, LB/Safety Blitzes should make Bree’s life hell.

RG Wisniewski is out this week

i have a couple extra interior linemen no worries

on the other hand, Wilson physically played, but mostly was out..lol

and his own team mates said Bobby Wagner shouldn't have played and that he looked sluggish so the having him be one of the main men responsible for shutting down gurley, doesn't look like it'll help much (as it didn't it real life either)

Rome with your blitzing up the middle and playing zone behind it you will have a vacated zone in your cover 3 that will get eaten up by Gronk and Kamara. You didn't mention anything about stopping Kamara in your gameplan or focusing on him. Either meaning to me you don't know how to stop him or you didn't want to bring attention to him against your team and the damage he can do. However Orlando your time share split doesn't give Kamara enough run. Hyde is no Mark Ingram and Kamara should be seeing a heavier work load. Gurley will have a big game in this one against Orlando as Bobby was shaken up coming in and it showed in the actual matchup as BCB pointed out. Josh Jones isn't stopping Gronk and the pure size of those receivers on the outside is a menace. Luckily Rome has some bigger corners but they aren't as good as those big receivers. Also starting Max Garcia or Britt will be a weakness for Rome inside. I like moving the pocket for Russell. The statement that Wagner will limit Gurley throws me off though. Because as I said above he clearly didn't. However you have Neal in the box to help with that also. This one is a good one. I'm not voting till later however.

To be fair counselor the corners  corners don't have to be as good in zones as the wr and Orlando is actually helping me out by rolling Wilson out and effectively taking away a third of the field unless he's throwing way across his body running the opposite direction so the extra blitzer shouldnt be exposing as big a hole as you think

I really don't like commenting on match-ups but since BCB did it, why not. My point in stating that Wagner will key in on Gurley is to point out that that will be his ONLY responsibility, he won't be covering TEs. Trevathan will be handling the TE and Neal is also in the box to help with the run.

This is a good point

Using Mosely as your main blitzer would leave only Josh Jones, a rookie and safety by trade, or Addai as the only protection in the short middle of the field to cover Gronk and Kamara/Hyde. Meanwhile, blitzing up the middle against a roll-out would be highly ineffective.

I'm a firm believer that the trenches dictate how good football teams are. I came back over and over on this matchup and really, if you ask me again in 2 hours, my mind might have changed, but while I agree that zone blitzing defense can lead to big plays in the mid area to Kamara and Gronk, especially I think it can also produce some sacks and maybe a turnover or two while limiting the vast talent disparity between Orlando weapons and Rome secondary. Given their OL and Rome strategy, the bootleg offense was necessary but it also limits the impact of a passing offense, even with Russ who is, imho, a top 3 QB in the NFL. On the other hand, I like Rome offense, and I think they can pound the ball against a team that is susceptible to be run on, especially with Wagner limited. I just think Rome has more consistency offensively and they can go on the road and win this one 28-23
