Is the 2003 Vikings collapse the worst in NFL history?

I honestly believe that if we kept Shanahan around with Cutler his whole career, he would've been a borderline HOFer as a player. The issue was that Mike was also GM of the team and he was terrible at drafting and bringing in FAs. On top of cycling through defensive coordinators and refusing to abdicate personnel responsibilities, Bowlen felt he had to go. Afterwards, Bowlen apparently learned nothing from the Shanahan situation and gave McD full control over the team shortly after hiring him, which led to Cutler being traded.

The late Les Shapiro (a longtime Denver sportscaster who died in 2022) said on a You Tube video that Joe Ellis (who, along with the trust, was starting to get more control because of Bowlen's Alzheimer's) was basically behind the McDaniels hire. He was sick of the lack of control that he had under Shanahan, and he decided to hire this young person because he thought that he could push him around. However, Ellis screwed up. McDaniels was an out of control hurricane that criticized everyone in the organization:

Another team I just thought of - 2008 Jets.  They were 8-3, Favre was playing good enough, and they destroyed the No. 1 seed Tennessee Titans.  Then they lose 4 of their next 5 with Favre getting hurt and throwing 2 TDs to 9 INTs.

That may be why Eric Mangini wished that he had more control at the time. In the book The Browns Blues, the author wrote about how Mangini wished that he would (or could) have done more to prevent Favre from coming to the Big Apple.

2009 Broncos might rival them.  Josh McDaniels was making a lot of people look foolish those first 6 weeks.  Defense was lights out.  Kyle Orton & the offense were playing well.  During their 6-game stretch, they beat the Bengals, Cowboys, Patriots, and Chargers.  All won 10+ games and their respective division.  They finished 8-8.

Of teams that still made the playoffs, maybe the 2008 Giants.  That was a damn good team, certainly one of the better teams off the top of my head to go one-and-done in the playoffs.  They were 10-1 before Plaxico shot himself.  They lost 3 of their final 4 and couldn't do anything against Philly in the playoffs.  I'd say that squad was better than the ones that won the Super Bowl (07 and 11).

He was absolutely 100000% using Spygate and knew what offenses were going to do. Even Marshall claims the coaches knew what was gonna happen. Obv the NFL found out somehow when they were 6-0 or 6-1. Same way the Pats won the ‘01 SB.

So basically they just needed to remove GM powers and they might have still been good with Shanahan.

Considering that he won the first 2 Superbowls in Broncos history along with other success as HC, it was going to be hard for anyone to tell Mike what to do in that organization. Him having a huge ego didn't help matters either. Kind of a similar situation to what happened to Belichick at the end of his tenure in NE.

Boy, history loves repeating itself.

I forgot about the '02 Saints. Then again, so did NFL Network since they weren't included on the Worst Collapses list.

That's ok. NFL Network largely sucks.

2009 steelers deserve a mention...They were 6-2 but a 5 games losing streak after that,3 of those games was vs Chiefs(4-12),Raiders at home(5-11) and the browns who was 1-11....

Thus began the Tomlin tradition of playing down to their competition.
