Been hearing Smelters name come up quite a bit. I really liked the pick when we made it and I hope he can figure his **** out and make the 53. He's always had the potential to be good but just sucked until now.

In my 2015 mock I picked him up in the 7th round because he was an extremely raw but talented player coming off an ACL tear. Baalke way overvalued him and grabbed him much sooner in the 4th which set up some unrealistic expectations for his first two seasons. To me, he was a guy that should have been IR in 2015 (he was), practice squad in 2016 (he was, but sorta reluctantly), and then set up to contribute some in 2017. I think what you're seeing is just the realization of that potential. I don't think he'll ever be anything more than a solid reserve guy, but we could still use that right now.

Some practice notes:

5. Some defensive notes: Earl Mitchell and Ray-Ray Armstrong each stopped a running play in the backfield. Ahmad Brooks(x2), Aaron Lynch, Dekoda Watson and Arik Armstead all had sacks.

DeForest Buckner had a sack that could be credited to the 49ers secondary. On play action, Hoyer was looking downfield for Goodwin, but Lorenzo Jerome kept up with the speedy receiver stride-for-stride. Brooks also had a leaping PBU up the right seam in coverage of Garrett Celek.

12. Buckner left practice with an injury, but it didn't appear to be serious. He got his ankle re-taped but didn't go back onto the field. Chris Jones filled in with the first-team defense.

Hoyer is what he is. He has shown he is competent enough for stretches and with Shanahan's genius play calling, he should be solid enough. My concern is the OL and and our secondary. There are so many question marks in the back end and obviously our OL has been crap for the last two years. I could see us winning about 6-7 games, but more than anything I just want to see our young players take the next step. We need to develop some cornerstones on both sides of the ball that will be here when we become a playoff caliber team.

Not really worried about the secondary to be honest. All we heard during OTAs was how the defense was ahead of the offense and they were very few explosive plays and Hoyer was mainly throwing underneath for completions. Every beat writer suggested the offense lacked firepower. Fast forward to now and everyone is saying the complete opposite. These things go in cycles for the most part. Offense will have its days/weeks, defense will have there's. I think by the time the third preseason game rolls around, the depth chart will have started to materialize and roles will start to be defined and that's when I expect the defense as a whole to start to gel and come together.

One reporter mentioned that its not necessarily that our CBs have looked awful, its just they haven't had a answer for Goodwin and his speed, which to me isn't a surprise at all. Goodwin is a world class sprinter. I'm not surprise guys like Robinson, Johnson and Reaser can't run with him downfield. I don't expect most CBs in this league to be able run with him so its not something I'm overly concerned with at this point. Same reporter also mentioned that not having Ward at FS has hurt them as well. A big part of this defense is predicated on the FS being able to cover a lot of ground and help over the top. Tartt has looked like a fish out of water as the single high safety from all the reports I have read so that could be a issue as well.

O-Line I'm not too concerned with at this point either. I really just believe our D-Line is that good and that they'll have far more resistance in our practices, versus actual games. I think when all is said and done, our starters will be Staley, Garnett, Zuttah, Fusco, and Brown and they'll get better and become more consistent as the season progresses.

I'm really not sure why you aren't worried about the secondary. Ward is going to play a different position, albeit his position from college. But no guarantee he will be good at it, especially with how hard it is in this scheme. We all think Robinson is going to be good, but he's still unproven. And then our 2nd CB will be either Johnson or Reaser. Not exactly ideal situation if one of those guys is a starter. Now, maybe our front 7 is so dominant that the secondary will be just fine.

As for the OL, I agree those are likely to be the starters. But again, a lot of question marks there. This has been a bottom five OL for two consecutive years and on paper it hasn't improved all that much. It will come down to how much of a jump Garnett/Brown have made from the prior season.

To me, that is one of the worst 5 offensive lines in football when all is said and done. OR close to it. Hard to measure that sort of thing. It's not going to be a good line to me, though.

I think our line is going to be pretty atrocious, definitely bottom 10. Unfortunately, there's just nothing that can be done about it at this point in time without one of the unknowns becoming a stud.

Agree with J about the secondary - that's a problem right now, and it's not going to be good. The only way to really alleviate that problem is to get a lot of pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Unknown in Robinson (plus, I'm laying the over under on him getting hurt in games at 12.5), second corner is just not good. Ward an unknown, Reid very meh with regards to safeties in the league.

I"m harder on the offensive line than J. Not seeing this offensive line turning out to be very good. Hoping that Kyle schemes out the struggles, but i think the o-line is going to be a battle all year.

I mean I'm saying the OL is going to suck once again. Not sure how much harder you are than I am on the OL LOL. But the only chance it has of being decent is if Garnett/Brown make big jumps from the prior season. Everyone else at this point of their careers are what they are.

-Don’t count Vance McDonald out of the tight end competition. He’s looked mostly solid to begin camp. Out of all the holdovers at the position — Garrett Celek and Blake Bell — McDonald’s having the best camp.

-A couple of players saw some first-team reps for the first time. Elvis Dumervil’s veteran day off meant Aaron Lynch was serving as the pass rushing specialist in the nickel package. A trimmed-down Lynch has looked very solid to start camp and his roster spot, in my mind, is safe.

Ah so Dumervile had the day off and that's why Lynch got the 1st team snaps in the nickel.

Good to hear McDonald is looking good.
