So does every other team, so the point is moot. It's a fixed number, so you need to start thinking of salaries as a percentage of the cap and not the actual number. So Luke Kuchely and Bobby Wagner both signed extensions that took effect in 2016. Kuchely averaged 12.3 million per year, and Wagner 10.75. Salary cap for the 2016 season was 155 million, meaning that Kuchely and Wagner accounted for 8% and 7% of their team's cap space. Brown's agent will, correctly, ask for a number that is a percentage of cap space. Probably in the ~7% range (which, out of 180 million, would be 12.6 million per year). We didn't get a few more million. Everyone did. Which means the market is simply going to adjust upwards to reflect this newly raised ceiling. But for us, if it gives us a few more million to work with it will help with signing a priority free agent like Brown. It gives us an extra million or 2 to work with. With that extra 2 million Allen may decide to pay for Brown where if we didn’t have it he might decide to not re-sign him because of the cap ramifications. Internally it could matter, regardless of the truth that you speak about it goes up for everyone.

Which washes out the extra few mil

It's quite possible for the 3rd year in a row Brown won't find anyone willing to pay him top ILB money and we can get him for something we think he should get paid which I assume is in the $5 to 8 million dollar a year range and not $9 or above. That implies the Redskins are negotiating with Brown for a long term deal. I'm not completely convinced they are. I will admit that this could be my pessimism talking, but honestly, have we seen any real rumors that they're getting close to a deal?

According to ESPN NFL Insider Josina Anderson citing team sources, the Redskins are interested in bringing backinside linebacker Zach Brown and cornerback Bashaud Breeland. Both are set to hit the free agent market when the new league year gets underway on March 14th. The Redskins desire to re-sign Brown have been well documented since the midway through the season, however, it's going to cost them. Per Anderson's report, Brown wants to be paid in the realm of a top-three inside linebacker, which would equate to a $10-$12 million per year salary. Luke Kuechly currently owns the largest contract for an inside linebacker, averaging $12,359,059 annually. Prior to the start of the season, it seemed a foregone conclusion that Breeland would find his way to free agency with little resistance from the Redskins. With his strong play in 2017 and the impending trade of Kendall Fuller, things have changed. Breeland one of the NFL's most improved defensive backs this season, breaking up a career-high 19 passes last season.

I think the Redskins would like to bring back Brown and Bree, but neither are elite and theyr3 not interested in paying them as such. Something in the $5 to 8 mil a year range we’d probably re-sign them for, not $10 million or mote a year.

Given the front office's track record, I suspect they're offering more in the bottom end of that range than the top end. At this point, if it weren't for the fact that Moron is trying to cover his ***/save his job, it might be better to stay out of free agency mostly and let Brown and Breeland join Cousins in the compensatory pick generator for 2019.
