But VAR should be black and white.

If the ref doesn't know VAR just seems to further confuses matters.

Exactly.  The VAR definition is something like clear and obvious miss.  If so, how can it possibly not be over turned?  Until yesterday, nothing was kept the same.  Now in the past 2 days, the ref has kept original ruling twice.

I think 1 and a win is enough isn't it?

EDIT: Yeah they go through because they beat Sweden and that is the tie break with them tied (Mexico goes first with GD breaking the 3 way tie)

Not that it matters now, but if Germany and Sweden had both won 1-0, all 3 would have been equal on points, goal difference and goals scored.  Not sure how the H2H tiebreakers would have worked

yup had GD wrong. But Germany would be through because they'd have 3 goals scored in the games among tied teams. Mexico and Sweden only 2. But like you said irrelevant now.

This would be the part of the tie-breaker it would have gone to if Germany had won 1-0 and Sweden had won 1-0

Second step: If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the first step (see example in Table 1), their ranking will be determined by applying to the group matches between the teams concerned the criteria listed in art. 32 (5) lit. d) to h) in the order of their listing.

  1. greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
  2. goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
  3. greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
  4. greater number of points obtained in the fair play conduct of the teams based on yellow and red cards received in all group matches;
  5. drawing of lots by the FIFA.
