Motor City MoJo: Detroit Lion updates

Some clips from the NFCCG do not paint a good picture of the Lions defense. Some very dirty hits during the game. Branch stepping on Purdys knee, other late hits on Purdy and CJGJ hitting Deebos injured shoulder after the play late.

Not a good look, if you ask me.

Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker didn’t play as a rookie, and that was to be expected: The Lions drafted Hooker knowing that he was recovering from a serious knee injury in college at Tennessee in 2022, and the plan all year in Detroit was for Jared Goff to start, Teddy Bridgewater to serve as the backup, and Hooker to learn on the sideline.

But with Bridgewater planning to retire and no other quarterbacks on the Lions’ roster, this is the year for Hooker to establish himself as the backup behind Goff, and perhaps as a future starter. And Hooker says he plans to continue spending a lot of time with Bridgewater, who has become a mentor to him. In fact, Hooker says he’ll spend a lot of his offseason in Bridgewater’s Miami home.

Hooker:  “I’ve got my own place, but I will go down there and stay with Teddy this time, really hang out with Teddy and his family. He’s really kind of brought me into his circle, and it’s a blessing. I’ll be down there a lot. I’m eager to go down there and hang out with him.”

“Just how to be a pro, honestly, that just comes from Teddy. Teddy’s been my mentor this whole year, and I’m going to continue to work with Teddy this offseason. Really just follow him around, take mental notes, little tidbits that the naked eye might not see, or coach might not see. Teddy’s been in those positions where he’s been on the field and in control.”

Quarterback Jared Goff and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown have been an effective combo for the Lions over the last three seasons and the team would like to keep them together a while longer.

Goff and St. Brown are moving into contract years and head coach Dan Campbell told reporters on Wednesday that the team is going to work to make sure that both of them have new deals before any pacts come to an end.

The Lions met with St. Brown’s team at the Scouting Combine to get the ball rolling on talks and Goff has expressed a desire to be in Detroit for the long term.

Wide receiver Josh Reynolds helped the Lions end a playoff drought last season and he’ll now try to do the same thing for the Broncos.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that Reynolds has agreed to terms on a two-year contract in Denver. The deal is reportedly worth up to $14 million.

Reynolds was claimed off of waivers by the Lions in 2021 and he appeared in 38 regular season games during his time in Detroit. He caught 40 balls for 608 yards and five touchdowns last season and then added eight catches for 132 yards and a touchdown during the team’s postseason run.

This clears the path for Jameson Williams to grab hold of the #2 roll in the Motor City. Will he flourish or flounder? Do the Lions look to the draft for WR help?

Animal House's Pinto (played by Tom Hulce who went on to play Mozart in Amadeus), Belushi's Bluto, and Steven Hurst's Flounder.

Jameson Williams will "bet" on himself...and lose.

The UFL Michigan Panthers called on Jake Bates at the end of Saturday’s season opener against the St. Louis Battlehawks because they needed a 64-yard field goal to win the game and they felt the kickoff specialist gave them the best chance of getting one. Bates had not made a field goal since high school, but came through twice — a late timeout gave him a practice try — and the Panthers got an 18-16 win that might propel Bates to the NFL.

Tony Paul of the Detroit News reports that the Lions are one of multiple NFL teams that have reached out to the Panthers about Bates in the wake of the field goal.

Bates played soccer at Central Arkansas and kicked off for Texas State before brief stints with the Buccaneers and Texans. He may be getting another look in the big leagues thanks to Saturday’s big boot.

The Lions had until Wednesday to match the restricted free agent offer sheet that tight end Brock Wright signed with the 49ers and they have made their decision. The Lions announced that they have opted to match the offer rather than allowing Wright to leave for their NFC Championship Game opponents.

It is reportedly a three-year deal for Wright worth $12 million. There was $6 million in guaranteed money included in the offer.

The Lions’ original restricted free agent tender was for $2.985 million, so it’s a significant increase for Wright. He has made 41 appearances for the Lions over the last three seasons. He has 43 catches for 424 yards and seven touchdowns and will continue to team with Sam LaPorta as the top tight ends in Tennessee.
