Spain had to scrap their training session today because a bunch of fans showed up purely to whistle at and abuse Pique. Wouldn't really surprise me if he ends up being unavailable for the national team moving forward because of the Catalonia mess.

He should've turned down the call up.  Kind of hypocritical to play for the national team of a nation you don't want to be a part of.

Joking aside today there is a very important game in international football.

Syria vs Australia.

If they manage to beat Australia over two legs they then face the prospect of a playoff against the United States for a place at the World Cup. What a turn-up that would be!

While we've been horrible, I'd be very surprised if Australia doesn't scrape through this AFC play-off and make the inter-continental play-off with whoever comes forth in NA.

Syria did well to finish 3rd in their group given all of the problems they've had to overcome given the turmoil the country is in. However they had a far easier group and only needed to finish above China and Qatar (neither of which are any good) to get 3rd and had the luxury of being in the group with an out-of-form South Korea.

Australia, despite its poor performances and its inability at times to know where to be in the system stupidly installed by our coach mid-way through qualification, Games 2 and 3 of the Confed Cup just gone showed that the team is capable of playing at a level good enough to make it through to the WC

The South American qualifying games are ones to watch tonight. Argentina (5th)-Peru (4th), Chile (6th)-Ecuador (8th) and Colombia (3rd)-Paraguay (7th) will see the 6 teams trying to qualify (with Brazil who's already through and Uruguay who should be) go head to head. Should Colombia win, they would make sure they can finish no lower than 5th. Paraguay and Ecuador need to win to stay alive. Argentina, Peru and Chile fates will probably be decided in the last game though there's a scenario where Argentina or Peru go through tonight with a win (basically if Paraguay and Chile lose)

It's been a pretty crazy qualification in South America. having Argentina or Chile miss the World Cup would be pretty shocking. Colombia should probably win tonight and clinch their spot. These matches have been almost impossible to predict this go around so it should be a very interesting end to qualification..

How Argentina struggle is beyond me.

They've dropped 4 points against Venezuela.

It's embarrassing when you look at their squad. They seem a bit Arsenal like to me, they don't have that grit to just grind out results when things aren't going their way or when teams are just pounding on them. Still it's inexcusable.

I think a big part of their problem is a lack of squad balance, and that they've never really worked out how to get their attacking stars to fit together.

They have a multitude of forwards, and some decent CBs, but they're really lacking at fullback and defensive midfield.
