Portland Horned Owls

Motivation: It's week 8 of the BDL season and despite losing our starting QB to an injury we're in position to return to playoff form  with a win getting us back to .500, we're coming off a win last week and look to continue that this week.

Portland Offensive Game plan: Next man up  and that man is having the best season of his career, Brissett starts at QB and while he's not on Mahome's level he is playing extremely well this year. We'll once again be going with a more run focused attack this week to take advantage of Camden's weak front seven and capitalize on our offensive strengths in winning at the LOS with our o-line. McCaffrey will have to carry the offense this week with Mahomes out and he will do just that as we're going all out by feeding McCaffrey 30+ touches and making sure he gets at least 8+ targets in the passing game, Brissett will be eased in with a strong running game to support him this week.

Formations: Shotgun, I-Form, 3 wide, 4 wide, 5 wide, 2 TE, 2 RB etc. We'll use a variety of formations and keep a healthy balance. | Scheme:  Pass 50% to run 50%

The Passing Game:

Brissett will start at QB for us this week with Mahomes out and he'll have full command of the offense here, Jones maintains the no.1 WR spot with Adams out again, he'll command a lot of looks this week since he's our most reliable WR and he has a solid match up with A.J Bouye. Mike Williams will be our no.2 WR and will command a few looks in the redzone as well as be used as a blocker with his massive 6'5 230 frame. McCaffrey will obviously be a focal point of the offense this week as he should command 30+ touches in this game including 8+ in this one, we like our match ups against Camden's back seven in this one and we'll specifically try and get him matched up with Chuck Clark who is garbage IRL. DeDe Westbrook returns as the no.3 WR this week and should command a few looks, Johnson and Pringle will rotate in and out, we'll specifically look to target Worley given his affinity for giving up big plays.

Freeman will be used as McCaffrey's relief option to keep him fresh, still expect McCaffrey to play 85% of the snaps and line up out wide on occasion, probably in 4 wide and 3 wide depending on the play. We'll use Patrick Ricard as a FB to help in the running game as well our TEs since they offer nothing in the passing game due to injuries at the position and they'll more or less be used as blockers.

Camden has a pretty soft defense all though that's mostly due to injuries and some trades but still it's hardly an elite unit save for Byard who is a stud along with Chandler Jones who is an excellent pass rusher and will be given extra attention from our blockers, he'll see some double teams and chips at the line. we feel our O-line is up to the task and should be able to win their match ups in the trenches and let us establish the running game as well as keep Brissett protected. He will adjust protection and audible as needed to take advantage of Camden's defense when he sees a matchup he likes.

The Running Game:

McCaffrey will of course be the workhorse back in this but expect a 85:15-ish split so he can remain fresh throughout the game, Freeman and company will mix in to run the ball to keep McCaffrey fresh for the 4th Q as well as be used as pass catchers, both will see time on the field at the same time. As for the running attack we'll be running this game we'll be focused on attacking Camden's interior since their edge rushers are pretty solid with Yannick+Jones forming a solid duo.

The Blocking Unit:

We'll execute the blocking assignments as necessary. In a pinch Ben Jones will plays C/G, Dotson plays OT etc.

Ricard will be our FB in this one and be used in obvious run situations as well as be potentially a goalline back (he's 305-ish and plays d-line IRL)

TDLR;

Control the trenches, Win against Defenders, make plays in key situations, no penalties, long drives via running the ball, execute our assignments, finish in the redzone, score points, capitalize on turnovers, win the TOP battle, control the clock, win on 3rd down etc.

Portland Defensive Gameplan:

Cover 1 man, Cover 3 zone with the focus of keeping Camden's running game in check. Dominate the LOS and control the game from there, we expect our d-line to win and get after Jackson who is extremely quick to give up on a play and run.

Formations:  4-3 [Base Defense] / 4-2-5 [Nickel] along with other various formations that depend on down&distance&situation| Scheme: 50% man to 50% Zone coverage, Cover 1, Cover 3, Cover 2 etc.

Pass Coverage:

Our defense isn't at full strength but we're up to the task of limiting Camden in this one.

Desmond Trufant is out this week and that sucks sure he hasn't been great this year but he's still a good no.1 CB,  Logan Ryan will step up as the no.1 CB and will cover the right side in zone he'll also pick up Hopkins in man coverage, look to their IRL matchups this year to determine this outcome. Eli apple will cover the left side in zone as well as cover the no.2 WR in man, he'll rotate with Alexander on Kupp's coverage. Alexander will man the 3rd CB spot and the slot again this week, Alexander is a functional CB so he should be able to handle his assignment.  Reshad Jones is out again so Marcus Maye starts again, Malcolm Jenkins will be tasked with being the SS who plays whatever role is allotted to him depending on the coverage, Jenkins will also occasionally cover TEs as well as the defensive signal caller in the secondary.

There is no denying Camden has a good stable of RBs given their QB is a RB and Michel has been functional this year, Camden's running game outside of Jackson is pretty weak given they basically have no o-line after some key injuries but still Jackson is a massive threat and Martinez will be tasked with spying him on occasion (expect 3rd and longs, along with obvious running downs so roughly 35% of the snaps) Camden's TEs are solid with Engram and a 39 year old Witten who should've stayed retired. Not gonna deny their WRs are very good with Hopkins being a top 5 NFL wideout, Kupp's getting up there as well and Sutton is a functional no.3 WR.

In dime packages Blake Martinez remains on the field, he will also be the defensive signal caller for this game and make adjustments if needed.

Front Seven/Run Defense:

Obviously Jackson is a massive running threat so Jenkins+Martinez will be tasked with spying him on occasion, this won't happen on every play and they will rotate this role but expect Jackson to draw a QB spy fairly frequently (35% of the snaps is a good bet.

We trust our front seven to be able to control the running lanes and the LOS in this game, with some defenders on IR Linval Joseph adds some reinforcements to help Pierce and our d-line to handle the run game.  Ford starts again this week he'll be used more often as a pass rusher as well as rotate with Beasly. Our front seven should be able to handle Camden's swiss cheese offensive line, as well as free up our LBs to make the plays they need to change the tide of the game.

Their RBs are pretty talented but at all so we'll put the effort into keeping them in check, Javon Brown draws the start at WLB and has quickly proven himself to be one of the Titan's best young LBs. We'll rotate our DL+LBs+DBs etc as necessary to keep them fresh and change personnel for coverage's/schemes/situations as needed.

The Pass Rush:

Jackson isn't exactly a great passer but he is a magician at escaping the pass rush and making plays out of nothing so we'll have a containment plan for him on almost every 3rd down as well as in the redzone, whether that's via Jenkins or Martinez spying him we should be able to contain him. Vic Beasly will be used as a blitzing LB on occasion and will rotate in with Mercilus+Ford on occasion as well to keep them fresh.

TDLR; Play good defense, control the LOS, dominate the running lanes, force turnovers, get after the QB, don't blitz often, contain Camden and the running game, play smart football, mind the down&distance etc.

Camden Hood Rats

Offense
This week we go against a Portland team whose owner claims he isn't submitting a write up. We were almost fooled like this once before and we won't let it happen again. With think our offense has some distinct advantages against their defense and here are the keys to what we want to do.

Power run game to attack the edges- We're putting Carlos Hyde in the starting lineup today to have our two most productive runners in the backfield at the same time. Hyde is also familiar and thriving running in the backfield with another mobile QB IRL so his fit here makes sense. Portlands edge players and their leading tackler (Martinez) are more finesse players and can struggle when run at. We'll use our RPO based offense to attack with runs behind our massive tackles. A combo of Hyde, Michel and Montgomery will all use their big bodies to wear down this athletic defensive front, with Jackson being our speed option to take off on some designed runs today. We want to keep Jackson to about 10-12 designed runs but he also makes a living carving up over aggressive defenses.

Use PA/Trips/Motion/Bunch to free our WRs- We think we give Jackson a very good set of WR's to throw to, and to make things even easier for him we'd going to lean on play action from our running game to get some open looks to our receivers. We'll also keep using our bunch looks, trips and motion to force Portlands defenders to make quick decisions, and wade through traffic to cover our guys. We feel confident with all of our WR's matchups, so regardless of matchups or zone expect heavy targets for Hopkins, with Sutton getting some deeper looks and Kupp working the middle of the field as he does so well.

Protecting Lamar- As I stated earlier, Portlands edge defenders are more finesse guys so they love to rush the passer. With 3 of my LT's still out we'll keep Vaitai in there, and we'll keep the same type of protection as we did last week with keeping RB's in the block and using our TE's to chip the defender before heading out into their routes.

Defense (Cover 1 Robber press man base)

With Portland coming into todays game without their best player, we still respect everything Gardner Minshew can do. With that being said, a productive McCaffrey will go a long way to helping his success so it's paramount for us to limit him. With our defense closer to full strength than it's been all year we think we have the personnel and scheme to limit the entire Portland squad. Here's how we do it.

Cover 1 Robber press man base- This will be our base set for the day. It allows us to do a couple things we love to do. 1) Play man coverage on the outside 2) Allow Jamal Adams to play the robber role and move all over the field. This is our base with Portland in 3 WR sets, obviously any very heavy sets Portland brings in we'll adjust, and if he decides to go 4 wide we'll bring in an extra corner in favor of Leonard. Here are our coverage assignments.
Jones - Bouye
Westbrook - Ward
Williams - Williams

McCaffrey Committee- For McCaffrey in coverage, we'll use a combo of Jamal Adams and Jaylon Smith. With Adams in the robber role, it gives him the freedom to roam and work closer to the LOS, and he can swap out coverage responsibilities with Smith to keep Minshew guessing. These two can also alternate between blitzes and dropping into passing lanes when the other guy is out with McCaffrey. Leonard will get the TE, and since neither of Portlands TE's are much of a receiving threat, expect Leonard to use his invaluable blitzing ability to attack Minshew whenever Sample stays in to block in pass pro.

Force Minshew to beat us- With our defensive line being very strong against the run, our LB's really athletic and our coverage scheme giving us an extra defender around to limit the short passing game we want to force Minshew to beat us with Portlands other weapons. With our press man scheme, we won't give him any quick easy routes and he's going to have to force some throws. To alternate the press man look, every once in a while on some obvious passing downs we plan to drop back into a cover 2 zone look, with our corners dropping off and our LB's occupying quick passing lanes in the middle of the field and force a mistake or two.

Our defensive plan stays the same whether it's Minshew or Brissett.

Also Xmad Zach Brown got cut weeks ago and you still can't have 9 people on your bench.

I got 8 with Brown out so ha also yeah forgot to remove him he's just a C+P carryover from last week so ignore him, also what counselor said

Portland doubling a guy noticed on Camdens roster is always enjoyable

Anyhow, Portland comes out with a a solid strategy against Lamar but ultimately I think Lamar makes a good play or two deep

Only the other side of Westbrook breaks a big one on the theme outsider against ward who has struggled when plating this year but it's not enough as Camden locks up McCaffrey.. Better times ahead when mahomes returning but lasher catches a break

Camden 20-16

No, he's really not. But he's also a back up safety so I wish you luck in finding him matched up with McCaffrey.

No, they really aren't.  The mistruths are unnecessary.

Oh, ok. Very good idea. 340 lb Dexter Lawrence and 350 lb Snacks with Darius Leonard and Jaylon Smith behind them are sure to get battered by McCaffrey inside.

Ravens fan here, he is indeed garbage and he was a starter last week so I treated him as such this week pending injuries.

I don't see how it's a "mistruth" when I'm saying my opinion but ok.

Interior of your defense=attacking the middle  of the field not just running it up the gut even then we have a 300 lb FB to help take care of them.

Christian McCaffery is one guy.

That Camden Secondary is good enough to shut down those Portland receivers.

That leaves the entire DL and LBs to shut down McCaffery. I think they got this. My bold prediction for this game would be that Lamar out rushes Christian

His CBs are still hurt and very rusty but yeah ok.
